You can run a YouTube livestream continuously from a Mac mini with OBS, provided the Mac, encoder, upload connection, and stream are all configured and monitored for the workload. First enable live streaming on your channel, then choose OBS settings suited to your Mac and bandwidth, test the full setup, and plan how you will respond to interruptions. A Mac meeting OBS’s minimum requirements is not proof that it can sustain your particular stream.
What you need before starting
- A Mac mini running macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later. OBS supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, but the suitable encoder depends on which you have.
- An eligible, verified YouTube channel. YouTube says the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before your planned start.
- A reliable wired or wireless internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream, plus margin for variation and other network use.
- OBS Studio, your scene sources, and any audio or visual material you have permission to broadcast.
OBS cautions that meeting its system requirements does not establish that a computer can stream or record a particular workload. Encoder choice, output resolution and frame rate, and scene complexity all affect demand. See OBS system requirements.
1. Enable YouTube live streaming
- Sign in to the YouTube channel that will host the stream and complete channel verification if needed.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and follow the prompts to enable live streaming. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or schedule the event in Live Control Room. You can also set up a stream without announcing a scheduled start, depending on your intended workflow.
YouTube’s setup requirements and event guidance are in YouTube live streaming tips.
2. Install OBS and choose an encoder for your Mac
Download and install OBS Studio, then open it and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Review its output settings rather than assuming its suggestion has been validated for a continuous broadcast. The OBS version, macOS version, scene complexity, and selected output target can affect results.

Apple Silicon Mac mini
OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox hardware encoding for H.264 streaming on Apple Silicon. Hardware encoding can reduce the work handled by the CPU, but it does not remove the need to test the complete scene and stream. Select the H.264 VideoToolbox encoder in OBS if it is available for your configuration.
Intel Mac mini
OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported on Intel Macs for services requiring constant bitrate, and directs Intel users to x264. Choose x264 and test whether the Mac can encode your selected resolution and frame rate without persistent rendering or encoding lag. Do not assume Intel and Apple Silicon models use the same OBS encoder setup. Details are in OBS hardware encoding guidance.
Apple’s current Mac mini technical specifications list M6 and M5 Pro configurations with hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC video encoding. Those specifications describe media hardware; they do not establish an OBS capacity or guarantee continuous operation.

3. Configure the YouTube event and protect the stream key
- In Live Control Room, create or open the event and locate the stream settings.
- Copy the stream key and enter it in OBS’s YouTube service configuration. YouTube describes the stream key as both the feed address and a password, so do not show it in public screenshots, recordings, or guides.
- Use the stream URL shown for the event. Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it; YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP transported over TLS/SSL.
- In OBS, confirm the correct YouTube service and key, then start the encoder when you are ready to preview the feed in Live Control Room.
For current controls and stream-key handling, see YouTube’s live stream settings guide and its encoder setup guide.
4. Set a conservative video, audio, and keyframe target
For a common SDR 1080p H.264 stream, YouTube’s undated encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following values. These are platform recommendations, not a promise that the connection or Mac will remain stable.
| Output target | Recommended H.264 video bitrate | Keyframe interval | Other relevant settings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | CBR; AAC or MP3 audio |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | CBR; AAC or MP3 audio |
YouTube’s advanced SDR recommendations include Rec. 709 color, 44.1 kHz stereo audio, and 128 kbps stereo audio. Start at 1080p30 if your scene and connection do not require 60 fps; 60 fps needs more upload capacity and may increase encoding load. YouTube’s full current table is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

5. Check upload capacity and leave headroom
Test upload speed on the same network and, where possible, the same connection the Mac mini will use. The upload result matters; download speed alone does not indicate whether the stream can be sent reliably. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For example, 5 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio is about 5.13 Mbps of encoded payload. Adding 20% gives a rough usable-upload target of about 6.2 Mbps for one stream, before transport overhead. This is arithmetic from YouTube’s recommended settings and headroom guidance, not a separate speed benchmark. Leave more room if other devices share the connection or upload speed varies. If you use a backup stream, include the primary and backup bitrates before adding headroom. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
6. Build the scene and test the entire chain
Add the sources your broadcast actually needs—such as video capture, images, overlays, and audio—and remove sources that add complexity without helping the program. Check that audio is routed to the intended OBS mixer channels, levels are not clipping, and any media or capture devices remain available. A scene that looks fine in the editor can still fail when its source, sound, or connection is used continuously.

- A POWERFUL PLATFORM FOR AI — Apple silicon is designed to run demanding AI workflows like using huge LLMs, directly on device.
- Configure the event and scene at least two hours before a scheduled broadcast, as YouTube advises.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, then preview the feed in Live Control Room.
- Test movement and sound similar to the real broadcast, not just a static screen or silent scene.
- Check playback on the channel’s watch page and a mobile device, and confirm picture and audio are present.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator and messages during the test. Correct warnings before relying on the stream.
YouTube’s encoder guide says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its event checks are described in encoder settings and live streaming tips.
7. Plan for continuous operation and interruptions
A 24/7 OBS stream is a locally produced broadcast: the Mac mini, OBS, its sources, power, and network connection all remain part of the path. Decide in advance who will check it and how an interruption will be detected. Monitor the YouTube health indicator, check that audio has not unexpectedly gone silent, and verify OBS reconnect behavior in a controlled test. Do not assume macOS or OBS will automatically restart every failed source or recover from every outage.

YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Its guidance supports testing and monitoring, but does not guarantee a particular OBS or macOS restart behavior. Test any backup encoder or failover arrangement before relying on it. See YouTube streaming tips.

Archive expectations
Do not assume one uninterrupted YouTube archive will preserve an around-the-clock broadcast in full. The maximum uninterrupted event duration and archive behavior for this use case are not established here; check YouTube’s current guidance if a complete recording is important.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable | Channel verification, a recent restriction, or first-time activation still pending | Confirm eligibility in YouTube and allow up to 24 hours after first enabling live streaming. |
| OBS cannot connect or YouTube does not receive video | Wrong service, stream key, or stream URL; event not configured as expected | Recheck the event’s key and URL in Live Control Room and OBS. Treat the key like a password. |
| Stream-health warnings or dropped connection | Insufficient or fluctuating upload capacity, or a shared connection under load | Retest upload, lower the bitrate or output target, free network capacity, and maintain more than the recommended headroom when conditions vary. |
| Encoding or rendering lag | Encoder workload exceeds what the Mac can sustain for the selected output or scene | Use the correct encoder for Intel versus Apple Silicon, simplify the scene, or reduce resolution or frame rate; then repeat a realistic test. |
| Picture works but sound is missing or unexpectedly silent | Wrong audio source or routing, muted channel, or source stopping | Check OBS mixer activity and routing, then test audio throughout a representative run. |
OBS on the Mac mini or a cloud loop?
OBS is the appropriate route when the broadcast needs a live scene, live inputs, or changing overlays produced on the Mac. YouTube’s encoder guide also lists Gyre as a cloud service for continuously streaming prerecorded video; that is a different workflow from generating an OBS scene on your Mac. Compare current service terms and features directly before choosing a third-party service. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded videos looping on YouTube rather than produce a live OBS scene, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the computer and home connection are not part of the playback path.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; videos stream as uploaded, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
