To rotate videos without restarting your YouTube broadcast, keep the encoder connected and let OBS Studio play the files from a VLC Video Source playlist. OBS advances through the playlist while the encoder continues sending the feed to YouTube; enable Loop Playlist if the list should repeat after its final video.

How rotation works while the stream stays live

YouTube receives one continuous feed from your encoder. In this setup, OBS supplies the video content, and a VLC Video Source handles the sequence of files. Moving from one queued file to the next does not require ending the YouTube broadcast: the playlist plays successive items inside the running encoder feed.

This is different from stopping a broadcast and starting another one for each video. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key from Live Control Room to connect the encoder. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes VLC Video Source as supporting a playlist of items, with controls for looping and shuffling.

Set up a rotating playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video Source. Match the application architectures: OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
  2. Add the playlist source to your scene. In OBS, select the scene that should carry the videos, add a VLC Video Source, and add the video files to its playlist. OBS scenes contain sources that make up the stream layout; see the OBS Sources Guide.
  3. Choose playback behavior. Leave shuffle off for the listed order, or enable it if you want OBS to shuffle the items. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should return to the beginning after the final file. With looping off, the source does not repeat the playlist after it runs out of media files.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key for the encoder connection, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube explains this connection in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and the role of the key in Manage live stream settings.
  5. Preview before going live. Check that the intended video and audio appear correctly, then start the encoder and follow YouTube’s go-live flow. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring stream audio and video quality while live; see YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.

Choose the right playlist behavior

  • Ordered rotation: Keep shuffle off when videos need to run in the sequence shown in the playlist.
  • Random rotation: Use the shuffle option when a changing order is acceptable.
  • Repeat or stop: Turn on Loop Playlist to start the list again after the last item. If it is off, the playlist plays through once.
  • Changes during a live broadcast: Prepare the playlist before going live when possible. The OBS and YouTube documentation establishes playlist playback and looping, but does not promise that editing the VLC playlist during playback will be seamless or risk-free. Test the exact live-edit procedure in a controlled stream before relying on it.

Protect the stream key and monitor the broadcast

A YouTube stream key is a credential that lets an encoder send a feed to the right stream. Treat it like a password: do not expose a real key in screenshots, recordings, or shared configuration. Preview the stream before going live and monitor both audio and video quality as it runs, as YouTube advises in its live streaming tips.

When you intend to end the broadcast, YouTube’s encoder guide says to stop content from the encoder or click End Stream in Live Control Room. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archiving statement is not a guarantee or permission for an uninterrupted 24/7 event. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshooting playlist rotation

  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • The playlist reaches the end and stops repeating: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video Source.
  • The videos play in an unexpected order: Check whether shuffle is enabled. Turn it off for the listed sequence.
  • YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed: Confirm that OBS is using the server URL and stream key from the intended YouTube Live Control Room stream. Keep the key private.
  • Playback or stream quality is unstable: Confirm the files work in the installed VLC setup, check system resources and network conditions, and preview the stream. Behavior can depend on OBS and VLC versions, media formats, available resources, and the network; the official documentation does not promise universal reliability or gapless transitions.
  • You need to change the playlist while live: Because seamless live editing is not established by the documentation, test the specific change in a controlled stream rather than assuming it will be interruption-free.
