To rotate a screen in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display, select the monitor you want to change, then choose an option under Display orientation. Microsoft documents this Settings control as the general-purpose way to choose a screen orientation; it does not establish three broadly available manual rotation methods.
Rotate a screen using Windows 11 Settings
- Open Settings and go to System > Display.
- If you have more than one display, select the monitor you want to rotate.
- Open the menu next to Display orientation and choose the orientation you want. Microsoft’s instructions describe choosing an orientation from this drop-down list. Microsoft’s screen-layout instructions.
- If you selected portrait orientation for an external monitor, physically turn the monitor to match the on-screen orientation.
Windows may ask you to confirm the change. Check that the display looks right before keeping the new setting.
Do Windows keyboard shortcuts rotate the screen?
Not according to Microsoft’s documented Windows shortcuts. Windows key + O locks the device orientation; it is not listed as a direct screen-rotation command. Windows key + P opens project settings for choosing a presentation display mode, not screen orientation. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut list.
Some device or graphics-driver combinations may offer their own rotation controls or shortcuts, but availability depends on the specific hardware and driver. Verify those instructions for your device rather than assuming a shortcut works across Windows 11 PCs.

Does tablet mode rotate the screen?
Tablet mode and display orientation are separate controls. Windows 11 does not provide a manual tablet-mode toggle. On touch-capable devices, tablet behavior changes automatically according to the device form factor and whether a keyboard is attached; that behavior is not a substitute for selecting an orientation in Display settings. Microsoft explains this in its article on tablet mode in Windows.

Why won’t the screen rotate?
- Check the selected display. In a multi-monitor setup, make sure you selected the display you intended to change before choosing its orientation.
- Check physical positioning. If you changed an external monitor to portrait, rotate the panel itself to match the software setting.
- Do not rely on Windows key + O to change orientation. Microsoft describes it as locking device orientation, not rotating the screen.
- For device-specific controls, check the manufacturer or graphics-driver documentation. The Microsoft guidance cited here does not establish that every device has a rotation shortcut.
