You may be able to return an iPhone from an iOS 18 beta to iOS 17 only if Apple is still signing an iOS 17 build for your exact iPhone model. Apple’s standard beta-removal process does not let you choose iOS 17: it erases the iPhone and installs the current public iOS. Recovering data afterward depends on having a compatible archived backup from before you installed the beta. There is no guaranteed lossless downgrade.
Before you start: check whether iOS 17 is still an option
Apple’s instructions for removing beta software return the iPhone to the “current publicly released version” of iOS, not a version you select. To install a particular iOS 17 build, Apple must still authorize (sign) that build for your specific iPhone model. Signing status changes over time and differs by model; check the exact device immediately before attempting a downgrade. The IPSW Guide signing-status tracker can help you check, but it is a third-party, changing reference—not a guarantee that a restore will work.
Downloading an older firmware file by itself does not make a downgrade possible. If iOS 17 is not currently signed for your model, Apple’s supported restore route installs the current public iOS instead.
Check your backup before erasing the iPhone
The restore process erases the iPhone, and a backup created while running beta software may not work on an earlier iOS version. Apple explicitly warns that beta backups may not be compatible with earlier versions; for example, a backup made on iOS 18.2 beta may not restore to iOS 18.1. Apple’s recommended source for restoring after a downgrade is an archived backup made before installing beta software. See Apple’s beta removal guidance.

- Confirm that an archived pre-beta backup exists and that you can select it. Without one, do not assume you can restore your current data after downgrading.
- Copy or sync irreplaceable files, photos, and other data created since that backup somewhere you can access later, where possible. Some app data may not be exportable, so this does not guarantee that everything can be preserved.
- Note your exact iPhone model and current iOS version, and check iOS 17 signing for that model immediately before proceeding.
- If you plan to use a computer, have an up-to-date Mac or a Windows PC with the Apple Devices app and a compatible USB cable. Have your Apple Account credentials available in case Activation Lock requires them after restore.
Choose between waiting and erasing now

Turn off future beta updates
On iOS 16.4 or later, open Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and select Off. This prevents future beta updates; it does not remove the beta currently installed. To remove that installation, use the erase-and-restore process below.
Erase and restore using a Mac or Windows PC
- Update your Mac to the latest macOS, or update the Apple Devices app on your Windows PC.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer with a compatible USB cable.
- Put the iPhone in recovery mode. For iPhone 8 and later, quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the recovery-mode screen appears.
- When the computer offers the option, choose Restore. This erases the iPhone and installs the current non-beta iOS; it does not offer a general choice of iOS 17. If the software download takes more than 15 minutes and the iPhone exits recovery mode, let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode steps.
- Complete the restore. If prompted, sign in with the Apple Account associated with the iPhone to turn off Activation Lock.
- During iPhone setup, choose to restore from an archived backup made on an earlier iOS version. For a computer backup, connect the iPhone, select it in Finder or Apple Devices, choose Restore Backup, and select the backup by date. Apple also supports restoring an iCloud backup during setup. If a software-version message appears, follow Apple’s update instructions rather than trying to force an incompatible backup. See Apple’s backup restore instructions.
What to expect when restoring your data
A pre-beta archived backup is the appropriate backup for Apple’s documented downgrade route, but it only restores the data captured when that backup was made. Material created afterward may be missing unless you preserved it separately or it syncs through a service that remains available after setup. A beta-era backup is not a safe substitute for an earlier-version backup: Apple warns that restoring it to an earlier iOS may not work.

If you do not have an accessible pre-beta backup, you can still erase and install a compatible public iOS, but you should be prepared to set up the iPhone without restoring that backup and to lose data that is neither synced nor separately saved. Do not erase the phone until you have checked which data you can recover.
