Rolling back a Node.js marketplace release can mean two different things: switching off a guarded feature at runtime, or restoring the application to a previously deployed revision. A feature flag can quickly limit exposure when the problem is isolated and its off path is safe; it cannot undo deployed code, database writes, or schema changes. If the release itself is faulty—or the flag does not restore service—roll back the deployment as well.

How do I roll back a Node.js release?

First decide whether the incident is confined to a feature or affects the release more broadly. A flag is a behavior control inside the running application. A deployment rollback replaces the running application revision with an earlier one. You may need both if a release has introduced separate feature and release-level failures.

1. Stabilize and scope the incident

Identify which marketplace journeys are affected—such as listing, search, checkout, payment, or seller operations—and collect the release revision, incident start time, relevant error and latency indicators, and flags involved. Use your service’s own SLOs and alert policy to judge severity; there is no universal threshold that fits every marketplace.

2. Choose the narrowest safe control

If the failure is isolated to a fully guarded feature and the disabled path is safe, turn off or narrow the flag for the affected environment or cohort. This can reduce exposure without redeploying. LaunchDarkly describes its flag control as a way to turn off a misbehaving feature without changing code or redeploying: Turning flags on and off.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the fault is in shared code, startup behavior, configuration, or another part of the release that the flag does not guard, restore the application revision through your deployment platform. A flag change does not repair defective code that runs outside the guarded path.

How do I turn off a feature flag in production?

Before changing the flag

  • Confirm the exact flag, production environment, and affected cohort. Avoid changing a similarly named flag or a broader environment unintentionally.
  • Confirm that the flag wraps the complete feature path, including relevant writes and side effects—not just the user interface.
  • Know what the application does when the flag is off, and when flag evaluation fails. The fallback must be safe for the affected journey.
  • Check whether disabling the feature can leave partially completed work, inconsistent data, or dependent operations behind.

Switch it off and verify the off path

Use your flag provider’s current console or API to change the flag for the intended environment or cohort. The exact UI labels depend on the provider and version. Then verify both that the application has received the updated state and that the disabled variation behaves acceptably in the affected journey. Do not treat a successful console save as proof that every application instance has applied it.

For LaunchDarkly, if no explicit off variation is configured, the fallback value supplied in the code’s variation call is served. Its documentation also warns that traffic routed through a proxy may delay updates, so check propagation in the actual deployment path: LaunchDarkly flag controls and fallback behavior.

For a Node.js service, use a server-side SDK for server-controlled marketplace decisions and follow the chosen provider’s current initialization guidance for the SDK version installed in the project. Define a safe default for evaluation failures and exercise both enabled and disabled paths before release. Do not assume a particular SDK initialization pattern or update latency without checking that provider’s current documentation.

Can I roll back a release without redeploying?

Yes, when a runtime flag fully controls the faulty behavior, its fallback is safe, and the flag state has propagated. In that case, the deployed code remains in place while the application stops executing the feature path. This limits exposure; it does not restore the previous application revision.

Use a deployment rollback when the failure is not confined to a safely switchable feature, the flag change does not restore the critical journeys, or the release has broader defects. Choose based on the incident’s scope and verify the result at the application level, not only in the flag console or deployment status.

How do I roll back an ECS deployment?

For Amazon ECS, rollback behavior depends on the service’s deployment controller, deployment type, configuration, and whether a prior deployment completed successfully. The circuit breaker detects a rolling update’s failure to reach steady state; with rollback enabled, ECS targets the most recent deployment in COMPLETED state. If there is no completed deployment to return to, the circuit breaker cannot roll back to one.

Configure automatic failure detection

ECS supports deployment circuit-breaker failure detection and CloudWatch alarm-based failure detection under documented deployment conditions. AWS documents these mechanisms for supported rolling update and blue/green deployment types; the circuit breaker itself applies to rolling update (ECS) services. Check the service’s deployment controller and current ECS documentation before relying on either mechanism:

AWS recommends monitoring ECS deployment state-change events through EventBridge, including SERVICE_DEPLOYMENT_FAILED, so the team can respond to failed deployments. An automatic rollback is not proof that checkout, payment, search, or other application flows are healthy.

Use the manual recovery path if automation did not trigger

AWS announced the ECS stopDeployment action on May 5, 2025. The announcement describes using it to roll a service back to the last revision that reached steady state, through the console, API, SDK, or CLI, in all AWS Regions at that time: Amazon ECS stop deployment announcement. Check the current API documentation and the service’s deployment controller before relying on this action; availability and behavior can depend on the service configuration.

What a flag or code rollback cannot undo

Neither switching off a feature nor restoring an application revision automatically reverses database writes or schema changes. Determine what the release changed, whether the prior revision remains compatible with the current schema and data, and whether recovery needs a separate data restoration or corrective migration.

For staged system or data transitions, migration flags differ from ordinary boolean kill switches: they coordinate reads and writes across migration stages rather than simply enabling or disabling one behavior. LaunchDarkly documents migration flags for its Node.js server-side SDK and describes stage-specific old/new read and write behavior: LaunchDarkly migration flags. Treat that as migration control, not an automatic database restore.

Verify recovery and close out the incident

  1. Check the affected marketplace journeys end to end, including the relevant customer and seller paths.
  2. Review error rates, latency, flag state and propagation, and deployment state against your service’s monitoring and alert policy.
  3. Record the timeline, release revision, incident signals, impact, and whether mitigation used a flag change, a revision rollback, or both.
  4. After stability, reproduce the fault, add regression coverage and release checks, and decide whether a temporary flag should be removed. Give any retained kill switch a clear owner and documented fallback.
