On a Windows touchpad, tap with two fingers or press the lower-right corner to open the right-click menu. Windows does not provide a universal setting to remap those standard actions; what you can change depends on your touchpad and its manufacturer’s software.
How to right-click on a laptop touchpad
Try either of the two gestures documented by Microsoft:
- Two-finger tap: tap the touchpad with two fingers at the same time.
- Lower-right-corner press: press down on the lower-right corner of the touchpad.
Both gestures show more commands, such as a right-click menu. Which one is more comfortable is a personal preference.
Where to find touchpad settings
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
- Review the controls available for your device.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Devices > Touchpad.
- Review the options available for your device.
Microsoft’s Windows touchpad gesture guide documents dropdown controls for customizing three- and four-finger gestures. It does not document a universal Windows switch for changing the standard two-finger or lower-right-corner right-click action.

Why the right-click control may be missing
Some gestures work only on precision touchpads. The Touchpad settings page identifies precision hardware with the message “Your PC has a precision touchpad.” If that message is absent, enhanced controls may instead be provided by the computer maker’s touchpad software; available options vary by device, and not every model offers a way to remap or disable right-click.
For manufacturer-specific controls, check Related settings > Additional Settings on the Touchpad page, then look for a touchpad tab or a section labeled Click or Touchpad Gestures. The labels and available settings depend on the manufacturer and model. Microsoft describes these legacy controls in its touchpad settings guidance.

What to do if touchpad right-click does not work
- Try both gestures. Tap with two fingers, then press the lower-right corner. A device may respond to one method even if the other is unavailable.
- Update the touchpad driver through Windows Update. Microsoft recommends Windows Update as a driver-update route. Follow its touchpad troubleshooting steps.
- Use Device Manager if needed. Windows can update or reinstall the touchpad driver there. If those steps do not resolve the problem, contact the computer manufacturer.
Do not confuse this with mouse button settings
In Windows 11, Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Primary mouse button changes which mouse button acts as the primary button. It is a mouse setting, not a control for touchpad right-click gestures. See Microsoft’s mouse settings guidance.

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Its touchpad settings path remains Start > Settings > Devices > Touchpad, but the end of support is relevant if you continue using Windows 10.
