To show a guest contributor’s name without creating a WordPress account, save the preferred name in a post custom field and use PHP filters to replace the author name WordPress outputs. This changes the displayed byline only; it does not create a guest profile, biography, or author archive.
When this custom-field method makes sense
This approach suits a post with one guest byline when you want to keep the contributor out of the WordPress user list. It stores a text value on the post, then substitutes that value when author-name filters run. The post remains associated with its existing WordPress author behind the scenes.
A name string does not create a reusable author profile, avatar, biography, co-author relationship, or guest-author archive. If you need those features or regular multiple bylines, consider a plugin-based approach instead.
Add the guest name to a post
- Open the post you want to display with the guest byline in the WordPress block editor.
- Enable Custom fields. Open the three-dot menu, choose Preferences, and enable Custom fields under Advanced. The exact control location can vary with the editor and active theme.
- Create the field. In the Custom Fields panel, use
guest-authoras the field name and enter the guest’s name as its value. The key must match the code exactly. - Save or update the post.
Add the author-name filters
Add this PHP snippet using a code-snippet manager or another suitable method for your site:

}The callback reads the guest-author post metadata and returns its value when it is non-empty; otherwise, it leaves the original name unchanged. WordPress documents filter registration with add_filter() and post metadata retrieval with get_post_meta(). The tutorial recommends WPCode as an optional interface for adding the snippet; its product details may change.
WordPress filters only affect output paths that invoke those hooks. The tutorial’s two filters target common author-name output, but they do not guarantee that every theme, block, or page builder will use those paths. The Custom Guest Authors listing says compatibility depends on how the theme or builder retrieves the author, including whether it uses the_author(), get_the_author(), or get_the_author_meta( 'display_name' ).

Check the byline where your site displays it
- Preview a post with a populated
guest-authorfield and confirm the intended name appears. - Preview a post without that field and confirm the original author name remains.
- Check the contexts that matter to your site, such as single posts, archives, and feeds. If a context still shows the original name, its template may not use the filtered output.
Choose an alternative if you need more than a name override

The Custom Guest Authors listing also documents transient caching with a 12-hour default, configurable from 1 to 168 hours, and invalidation on post saves or post-metadata changes. Those are claims about that plugin, not behavior of the hand-written snippet.

The Custom Guest Authors listing says its guest-author metadata key can also be set through update_post_meta() or WP-CLI. The key still needs to match the value the display code or plugin expects.
