Assume an API key found in a public repository, log, or other exposed location is compromised. Remove the exposure, but also disable or revoke the credential with the provider that issued it: deleting a file or commit cannot invalidate copies someone may already have. Then update every application and job that uses the key, verify the replacements work, and investigate activity from the exposure period.
1. Contain the exposure and identify the credential
Record where the key appeared, when it may first have been exposed, which provider issued it, and which account or project owns it. Identify the credential type as well: a persistent API key, a service-account key, a short-lived token, or another identity credential may have a different disablement process. Treat the key as compromised even if you have not found evidence of misuse.
For an actively exploitable key, provider-side disablement or revocation is the urgent containment action. If you need to coordinate a critical service update, involve its owner and your security lead while preparing the replacement; do not leave a known-exposed key active simply to avoid an outage. Follow your incident-response process and weigh the operational impact against the risk of continued access.
2. Revoke or rotate the key with its issuer
Use the issuing provider’s current instructions for that credential type. “Rotate,” “disable,” “delete,” and “revoke” can mean different things across providers, and there is no single cross-service command that invalidates every API key. GitHub Docs puts the priority plainly: “The most important remediation step is revoking the secret with the secret’s provider.” AWS Prescriptive Guidance likewise advises rotating or revoking an exposed secret in its originating service; Stripe advises rotating a compromised secret API key as soon as possible.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Confirm in the provider’s console or API that the old credential is no longer valid. A repository alert, a leak-detection notification, or removal of the key from source code is not proof that it has been disabled. Google Cloud warns that automatic detection of leaked service-account keys is not guaranteed, even where an automatic-disable policy is configured.
3. Find every consumer and update it
Before changing the credential, make a practical inventory of systems that read it. Search source code and deployment configuration, and ask service owners about consumers outside the repository you found. Include application configuration, build and deployment pipelines, scheduled jobs, scripts, and operational tools.

If the provider supports overlapping credentials, and the exposure risk allows time, a lower-disruption rollout may be possible: create a replacement, distribute it, update consumers, verify them, and then disable the old key. Do not assume overlap is supported. If the key is at immediate risk or safe overlap is unavailable, revoke it promptly and restore affected consumers with the replacement instead of extending the old key’s exposure.
- Create: Generate a replacement credential with the minimum permissions and restrictions the required workloads need.
- Store and distribute: Put it in an appropriate secrets store where practical, and grant access only to the people or workloads that need it. AWS guidance names AWS Secrets Manager and AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store; Google Cloud also offers Secret Manager.
- Update: Change each inventoried consumer’s configuration or secret reference, including jobs and deployment tooling.
- Verify: Test each affected service and confirm it is using the replacement successfully. GitHub’s remediation guidance includes testing services after updating them.
- Disable the old key: Once the rollout permits—or immediately when the risk requires it—confirm the old credential is disabled at the issuer.
4. Check whether the key was used
After containment, review the provider’s audit logs and usage records for the period between the likely exposure and confirmed revocation. Look for activity that does not fit expected service use, such as unrecognized calls, unexpected resource changes, unfamiliar source locations, or unusual spending where those records are available. Not every provider records every type of event, so absence of a visible record is not automatically proof that the key was unused.

GitHub recommends reviewing both its audit logs and the credential provider’s logs; AWS CloudTrail is one example of a provider-side source. Google Cloud’s incident guidance also advises reviewing resource access and audit logs. If you find suspicious activity, preserve relevant evidence and follow your organization’s incident process. Google Cloud notes that publicly exposed API keys can enable unauthorized data access or unexpected charges; that is a possible impact, not evidence that a particular exposed key was abused.

Remove the key from active files and, where appropriate, clean it from repository history. History cleanup reduces future exposure, but it does not invalidate a credential already copied elsewhere. Notify relevant service and security owners, preserve incident evidence, and document the exposure and remediation timeline.

For future credentials, use separate keys for different applications or teams when that makes access easier to limit, restrict keys to the APIs or sources that need them where the provider supports those controls, and monitor usage. Google Cloud recommends key restrictions and monitoring; it also cautions that authorization keys can obscure end-user identity in audit logs. Consider a more suitable identity mechanism when a long-lived key is not necessary.

What determines the safest response sequence?
- How quickly the issuer can invalidate it: Use the provider’s procedure for the exact credential class and verify the old credential’s status.
- Whether overlap is supported: Treat a staged replacement as an option only if the provider allows it and leaving the exposed key active briefly is an acceptable risk.
- What depends on the key: The number and criticality of consumers determine the rollout and outage risk, not whether the exposed credential needs remediation.
- What the logs can establish: Available audit and usage records vary by provider, credential type, and retention. Review what exists for the exposure window.
- Whether it is a key or a broader identity: A service-account incident may involve persistent key files as well as short-lived access tokens, so investigate and contain the relevant credential types.
