A good readability review asks whether the change’s purpose and behavior are clear to the next person who must maintain it—and whether every bit of added complexity earns its place. Review the change in context, raise focused requests when confusion creates a real maintenance problem, and distinguish required fixes from optional polish. A useful improvement does not have to be perfect to be worth approving.
Start by understanding the change in context
Read the change description, then inspect nearby code or system behavior where needed. A short diff can still make a long method or a larger system harder to understand, so judge the result in its surroundings rather than by the number of changed lines alone.
Review the human-written code in the change instead of assuming that unseen lines are fine. If you cannot tell what the code is meant to do or why it is needed, ask the author for clarification. That conversation may uncover a missing explanation—or show that the implementation itself should be made clearer.
Judge clarity from the next reader’s perspective
Ask two questions: What does this code do? and Why does it do it this way? Names, organization, comments, and emphasis should help a maintainer answer both without unnecessary detective work. Readability is not simply how quickly the author could write the code; it is how well the code communicates its intent to others.

Names, organization, and comments
- Check whether names make the role of important values and operations apparent.
- Look for an organization that puts the essential behavior where a reader can find it.
- Keep comments that explain rationale or a non-obvious constraint. A comment that merely apologizes for confusing code may be a sign that the code could instead be simplified.
Comments should clarify the reason for a choice, not serve as a substitute for understandable implementation.
Ask whether complexity solves a real problem
Consider each abstraction, branch, generic mechanism, dependency, or speculative capability in light of the change’s actual needs. Does it support a current requirement, a meaningful performance constraint, or a credible maintenance benefit? Or does it introduce machinery mainly for a hypothetical future?

Neither line count nor the mere presence of a helper decides whether code is simple. An abstraction can clarify a repeated concept, isolate a real boundary, or make likely changes safer. It can also hide the details a reader needs. Repeated code can be easier to follow when the differences matter; factoring can help when it makes those differences clearer. The right choice depends on whether it reduces the reader’s effort in this codebase.
Some complexity is justified. Performance-critical code may need a less obvious implementation, and additional structure may make likely future changes safer. When that is the case, the reason should be visible so maintainers understand why the design exists and what care it requires. There is no universal numerical threshold at which an abstraction becomes over-engineered.

Apply project conventions without broadening the review
Use the project’s authoritative style guide first. Where it leaves a choice open, favor understandable consistency with nearby code—unless that consistency would perpetuate a harmful pattern. Guidance from Google’s code review reviewer guide and Go style guide offers useful examples, not universal rules for every language or team.
Keep a focused functional review focused. A readability review is not an invitation to demand unrelated cleanup across the surrounding codebase. Broad formatting mixed into functional edits can make the behavior harder to inspect; ask whether a proposed cleanup belongs in this change or would be clearer as separate work.

Check tests and documentation that explain the behavior
Review whether the tests make the changed behavior understandable and protect it from accidental regressions. Related tests belong with the logic they exercise. Also consider whether a user-facing change to a build, test, or interaction workflow—or a release change—requires an update to the relevant documentation.
Keep work focused by concept rather than by an arbitrary line-count limit. A coherent change can be substantial; splitting independent work may help reviewers understand it, while splitting closely related logic and tests can make the behavior harder to follow.

Write feedback that helps the author act
Comment on the code and its impact, not on the developer. Explain what makes a choice harder to understand or maintain, then give enough direction to make the concern actionable. For example, if a concurrency mechanism appears to add complexity without an apparent performance benefit, explain that concern and ask whether a simpler approach would meet the requirement.
Make it clear which comments block approval and which are suggestions. Labels such as “Nit,” “Optional,” or “FYI” signal that a point is minor or discretionary. If a change would be clearer with a different name, say what ambiguity the current name creates rather than presenting personal taste as a requirement. Note what is already working well when that helps the author understand the review.
Decide based on the change’s net effect on code health
Weigh the value of the change against the importance and cost of the remaining issues. Google’s review guidance says: “In general, reviewers should favor approving a CL once it is in a state where it definitely improves the overall code health of the system being worked on, even if the CL isn’t perfect.” That is Google’s stated practice, not a universal approval rule; teams should apply their own review standards and any security or domain-specific requirements.
As a final check, compare alternatives on the questions that matter: Is the purpose and rationale apparent? Is added structure justified by a real need? Does the implementation foreground relevant details? Does it fit local conventions without carrying forward a harmful deviation? Can the functional change be reviewed clearly, and do its tests make the behavior understandable? These questions keep the review centered on reader effort and maintainability rather than perfection.
