To check what a Chrome extension can access, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions on your computer, then select Details for each extension. Review its permissions and site access. If you still need it, narrow access to selected sites or to when you select the extension; remove extensions you no longer recognize, need, or trust. A permission warning describes what an extension may be able to do—it is not proof that the extension is malicious.
How to check an extension’s permissions
-
In desktop Chrome, select More > Extensions > Manage extensions. This page lists installed extensions and lets you turn them on or off. See Google’s instructions for installing and managing extensions.
-
For an extension you are unsure about, select Details. Read its stated purpose and examine the permissions and site-access options shown on that page.
-
Compare its access with the job it is meant to do. For example, an extension designed to change or analyze pages across many websites may need broader site access than one used only on a particular site. If its purpose is unclear or you no longer need it, remove it rather than keeping it enabled without a reason.

The permission commonly described as access to “your data on all websites you visit” is broad: Google says it can let an extension read, request, or modify data on every page you visit. Access restricted to a list of sites has a narrower scope. The warning describes capability, not whether the developer actually collects or misuses data. Google notes that some extensions need permission to read and change site data; judge whether the requested access makes sense for the extension’s function. See Chrome Web Store Help’s explanation of permission warnings.
How to limit an extension’s website access
If you want to keep an extension but reduce when it can act on websites, open its site-access menu from Chrome’s Extensions controls. Depending on the extension and Chrome version, the available choices include:

- When you select the extension: the extension can access a site when you invoke it.
- On [current site]: it can access the site currently open.
- On all sites: it can access all sites covered by its host permissions.
When a specific-sites option is available, use the extension’s Details page to add or remove allowed sites. Choose the narrowest setting that still lets the extension do what you need; restricting access may disable features that depend on running automatically across sites. Google describes these controls in its extension management guidance.
What the site-access setting does not control
This setting applies to sites matching the extension’s host permissions. Google says it does not affect lower-level network access through VPN or proxy settings. It is therefore a way to limit website access, not a complete audit of an extension’s code, data practices, or network behavior.

Chrome’s developer documentation explains that host permissions match URL patterns and, together with relevant permissions and APIs, can enable actions such as content-script injection, cookie access, or handling network requests. A permission indicates a capability; it does not by itself establish what data the extension collects or how it uses it. Chrome for Developers explains extension permissions, including the distinction between required permissions and optional permissions requested at runtime.

If you have several extensions that appear to do the same job, assess each one using the same practical questions:

- Do you still need its function? Remove extensions that no longer serve a purpose.
- How broad is its website access? Check whether it can access all sites or only sites you choose.
- Does that access fit its advertised function? A broad permission may be relevant to an extension that must operate across websites, but it deserves scrutiny.
- Can you use it with site-limited access? Test a narrower setting if the extension can still perform the task you want.
- Do you trust the extension and its developer? A permission prompt alone cannot answer this; it only describes requested capability.
These questions help compare extensions, but they are not a formal risk score or proof of how an extension behaves.
What to do if you cannot remove an extension or it returns
Work or school Chrome
An organization may manage Chrome settings and extensions. Chrome Enterprise documentation says a force-installed extension cannot be disabled or removed by the user. If Chrome does not offer a removal control on a work or school device, contact your administrator; the missing control alone does not mean the device is infected. See Chrome Enterprise’s extension policy guidance.
An extension changes or reappears unexpectedly
Chrome Help says suspicious software may change extension files. Its guidance for Windows, Mac, and Linux is to run antivirus or anti-malware software and then repair the extension; if that does not resolve the issue, Chrome directs users to its Help forum. This is a troubleshooting path, not a diagnosis that malware is present on your computer. See Chrome’s extension troubleshooting instructions.
Separate access settings and removal limits
- Incognito and file URLs: Access to incognito pages or file URLs requires separate user permission on the extension’s Details page. These are distinct from ordinary website host access.
- Previously accessed data: Removing an extension uninstalls it from Chrome, but the cited Chrome guidance does not establish that removal deletes data the extension may already have collected or removes it from every Chrome profile or device.
- Other devices: Signing in to Chrome can allow extensions to be used on another computer. Check other profiles or devices separately rather than assuming this removal covers them.
For context, Chrome for Developers’ permissions guidance discusses host access as well as separate permission for incognito pages and file URLs. Chrome’s Enterprise guidance on preventing extensions from altering webpages addresses organization-level controls.
