Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To rerun failed XCUITest cases on BrowserStack App Automate, submit the suite through the XCUITest builds API with retryTestsOnFailure enabled and set testIterations to a value from 1 to 5. API-based retries require iOS 15 or later and do not work with singleRunnerInvocation=true. For an xctestrun build, configure repetition in the XCTestPlan instead.
Configure retries through the XCUITest builds API
- Check the run type and device OS. This method is for an App Automate XCUITest build, and API retry options are not supported on iOS earlier than 15. See BrowserStack’s retry documentation.
- Enable retries and choose the iteration count. Submit a request to
POST /app-automate/xcuitest/v2/buildwith your device selection and uploaded app and test-suite URLs. For example:{ "devices": ["<device selection>"], "app": "<app_url>", "testSuite": "<test_suite_url>", "retryTestsOnFailure": true, "testIterations": 3 }Replace the angle-bracketed values with your build inputs. The value
3is an example, not a universal recommendation:testIterationsmust be an integer greater than zero and no higher than 5. BrowserStack maps these fields to Xcode’s-retry-tests-on-failureand-test-iterationsoptions. - Leave
singleRunnerInvocationfalse. BrowserStack cannot isolate and rerun individual cases when the whole suite executes together in one process. The default is false; keep it that way for per-test retries. - Submit the build and review each attempt. A case continues until it passes or exhausts its configured iterations. The reported status for a case run more than once reflects its last attempt.
Choose the right retry path for your build
| Build path | Where retry behavior is configured | Important limits or behavior |
|---|---|---|
| XCUITest build submitted to the REST API | retryTestsOnFailure and testIterations in the build request |
Iterations must be 1–5; API retry fields require iOS 15 or later and are incompatible with singleRunnerInvocation=true. BrowserStack Docs |
| xctestrun build using an XCTestPlan | The plan’s Test Repetition Mode | Available modes are None, Until Failure, Retry on Failure, and Up Until Maximum Repetitions. BrowserStack Docs |
The XCTestPlan modes have different purposes: Retry on Failure reruns a test when it fails; Until Failure repeats until a failure occurs; Up Until Maximum Repetitions uses the configured maximum; and None does not repeat. Choose the mode that matches whether you want recovery from a failed attempt or repeated execution to expose instability.
When to use test relaunch
BrowserStack documents testRelaunchEnabled alongside retry and iteration settings for test-runner communication errors or process-crash scenarios. Consider it for those specific failure types; it is not a general fix for assertion failures or every flaky test. The retry options and stated scenarios are described in the official retry guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Inspect failures even when a retry passes
A final pass does not establish that an earlier failure is fixed. Because the displayed status is the last attempt’s status, investigate the failed attempt rather than treating a later pass as proof that the suite is reliable.
- Compare attempts for repeatable application assertion failures, which may indicate a product or test issue.
- Check for runner communication problems or process crashes; those are the cases BrowserStack identifies for considering
testRelaunchEnabled. - Review available instrumentation logs and, when enabled, device and network logs. Device and network logging depend on the corresponding parameters being enabled.
- For crashes, retrieve the OS-generated crash report. BrowserStack also documents retrieving an XCUITest result bundle that can be opened in a compatible Xcode editor.
The XCUITest session API documentation describes per-test status and debugging fields, including these logs and artifacts. For initial suite setup and viewing results, see BrowserStack’s XCUITest getting-started guide.

Troubleshoot retries that do not run
Tests fail once and are not retried
Confirm that the request includes retryTestsOnFailure: true and a valid testIterations value from 1 through 5. Also confirm the device uses iOS 15 or later and that singleRunnerInvocation is not true.
Only some expected behavior appears in an XCTestPlan run
Check the plan’s Test Repetition Mode and its maximum-repetition setting. The modes are not interchangeable: for example, Until Failure stops when a failure occurs, while Up Until Maximum Repetitions follows the configured maximum.

A retry passes, but the test remains suspicious
Inspect the failed attempt’s instrumentation and any available device, network, crash, or result-bundle evidence. A later passing attempt changes the final displayed status; it does not by itself identify or remove the cause of the first failure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set more than five test iterations through the XCUITest API?
No. BrowserStack’s documented range is 1 through 5.
Does a passing retry mean the test failure is fixed?
No. The final status reflects the last attempt, so inspect earlier failed attempts and their logs.
