To restore Windows 11 file-search behavior, first identify what changed: which local folders are indexed, whether file contents are searchable, or whether you mean web or account results. Then adjust the matching control under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. If results are still missing, check the file’s location and run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter.

Identify what changed before changing settings

Windows Search can show results from several sources, so a missing result does not automatically mean the local search index is wrong. Decide which behavior you want to restore:

  • Local files or folders: Windows may not be indexing the folder where the file is stored.
  • Words inside files: The file type may be set to index properties only, rather than properties and contents.
  • Web results or account content: These are distinct from local file indexing and have separate privacy and search controls. See Microsoft’s Windows Search and Privacy guidance.
  • Results that are incomplete after a settings change: Windows may still be building its index.

If you are unsure which setting was changed, adjust only the relevant scope or file-type option below rather than resetting unrelated Search behavior.

Restore which local files Windows searches

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. If the page or a label is not visible, use the Settings search box and search for “Searching Windows.” Microsoft documents this page and the indexing controls in its Search indexing in Windows guide.
  2. Under Find my files, choose the intended mode: Classic or Enhanced.
  3. If you choose Classic and need to include or exclude particular folders, open Customize search locations, then use Modify in Indexing Options to review the selected locations.
Mode Default coverage Resource use and customization
Classic Documents, Pictures, Music, and the desktop by default. Other locations are not included unless you customize them. Microsoft describes Classic as balancing search performance and resource use. You can customize indexed locations.
Enhanced User folders and files across the PC. Provides wider coverage and may use more system resources.

Changing between these modes changes local indexing coverage. It does not, by itself, change web-result or account-content behavior.

Make words inside files searchable again

If Windows finds a file by name but not by words in its contents, check the indexing choice for that file’s extension. This setting is separate from whether its folder is included.

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, then open Advanced indexing options. If necessary, search Settings for “Indexing Options.”
  2. In Indexing Options, select Advanced, then open the File Types tab.
  3. Select the relevant file extension and choose whether Windows should index properties only or properties and contents.
  4. Apply the change. Content indexing is configured per file type and can increase the size of the index.

Properties-only indexing can make filenames and file properties searchable, but not the words inside the file.

Troubleshoot missing files and allow indexing time

After confirming the folder scope and file-type setting, check that the file is present before treating it as an indexing problem. Microsoft’s guidance on finding lost files recommends checking file locations and hidden-file settings as well as using the troubleshooter.

  • Search in File Explorer or choose This PC to look beyond the current folder. Microsoft explains these options in Find your files and apps in Windows.
  • Check the file’s location and whether it is hidden. A file may not appear in the place you expect even when it has not been deleted.
  • If the expected files are still missing, open Searching Windows > Advanced indexing options > Advanced, then select Troubleshoot search and indexing under Troubleshooting and follow the wizard. If labels differ, search Settings for “Indexing Options.”

Indexing runs in the background. Microsoft Support says, “When you first run indexing, it can take up to a couple hours to complete.” That is guidance for initial indexing, not a guaranteed completion time for every device or change; results may not appear immediately.

If the setting is managed or still unclear

If a work or school device prevents you from changing an option, or the setting keeps reverting, ask your organization’s administrator whether it is managed. For Settings navigation and search, Microsoft also provides Understand and explore Windows Settings.
