Windows does not provide one universal Restore defaults button for every display-color setting. The correct fix depends on what changed: an ICC color profile, calibration, Night light, Color filters, HDR, graphics-driver settings, or the monitor’s own controls.

For a custom Windows color profile, remove the unwanted profile and select another available profile as the default. Do not use Calibrate display if your goal is to return to the existing Windows-managed profile—calibration creates a new profile instead.

Restore the default Windows color profile

Use these steps when the screen has unusual color after installing an ICC/ICM profile, changing monitor calibration, or selecting a different display profile.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select Color profile.
  3. If you use more than one monitor, select the affected display at the top of the page. Profiles are managed separately for each display.
  4. Expand the unwanted custom or added profile.
  5. Select Remove.
  6. If another profile is listed, expand or select it and choose Set profile.

Removing a profile is not the same as calibrating the display. Windows’ current Color profile page does not include a single command that restores every display-color setting to factory defaults. If no alternative profile is listed, removing the custom profile may be all that is available through Windows’ current interface.

Check automatic color management

On supported displays, Automatically manage color for apps is a separate setting on the Color profile page. Select the affected display and review this option if app colors are the problem. It changes color management for apps; it is not a factory reset and may not be available on every display or system.

Do not select “Calibrate display” to reset colors

The Calibrate display button at Settings > System > Display > Color profile starts a calibration wizard and creates a new color profile. It does not restore the monitor’s original Windows profile.

You can also find the same type of calibration wizard by opening Settings and searching for calibrate display color. Use that option only when you want to create a calibration profile, not when you are trying to undo one.

Turn off settings that can tint the entire screen

Disable Color filters

Color filters can make the whole display appear gray, inverted, red, or another color.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Color filters.
  2. Turn Color filters off.

You can open Accessibility settings quickly with Windows logo key + U. In older Windows 10 releases, the setting was under Settings > Ease of Access > Color filters or Ease of Access > Color & high contrast.

Turn off Night light

Night light gives the display a warmer red or yellow appearance.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Night light settings.
  2. Select Turn off now, or move the Strength slider toward the lower setting.

Also check whether a Night light schedule is enabled if the tint returns automatically.

Check HDR settings separately

HDR has its own brightness and color state. Changing or removing an ICC profile does not reset HDR settings.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select the HDR-capable display.
  3. Open HDR.
  4. Adjust SDR content brightness or HDR content brightness, or turn HDR off temporarily to compare the result.

Windows 10

Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Windows HD Color settings, then review Use HDR and the available brightness controls.

On an HDR laptop, colors can change when the computer switches to battery power. Windows may turn HDR off on battery by default, which can make colors look less saturated after a restart. Plug the laptop into power before restarting, or enable the applicable battery HDR option.

If an external HDR monitor is connected to a laptop, check the display arrangement. HDR is not supported when the displays are duplicated. Go to Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and choose Extend these displays.

Reset built-in HDR video calibration

If the problem is specifically HDR video calibration on a laptop’s built-in display, use HDR’s separate reset control:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Video playback > Windows HD Color settings.
  2. Select the laptop display.
  3. Open the HDR video calibration controls by selecting Calibrate HDR video.
  4. Choose Restore default or Reset calibration, depending on the wording shown by your Windows version.

This resets HDR video calibration only. It does not reset ICC profiles, Night light, Color filters, graphics-driver settings, or the monitor’s hardware settings.

The built-in-display HDR calibration feature applies only to internal laptop displays. For an external HDR monitor, use the Windows HDR Calibration app instead.

Check the monitor and graphics-driver controls

Windows settings are not the only place where display color can be changed.

  • External monitor: Use the monitor’s physical buttons or on-screen display to reset picture mode, color temperature, contrast, and saturation. Desktop PCs often do not show a Windows brightness slider for an external monitor; Microsoft directs users to use the monitor’s controls.
  • Graphics software: Check the color controls in the software supplied with your graphics adapter. A GPU-level RGB range, saturation, or color-temperature override can remain active even after you remove a Windows profile.
  • Multiple monitors: Return to Settings > System > Display > Color profile and confirm that you selected the monitor that actually has the problem. Removing a profile from one display does not change another display.

If the Windows brightness slider is missing or does not respond, that does not prove the color profile is damaged. Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the display adapter, select Update driver, and follow the prompts.

Settings that do not reset display color

Two Windows personalization pages are often mistaken for display-reset tools:

Setting What it changes What it does not change
Settings > Personalization > Colors Windows light/dark mode, custom mode, and accent color Monitor ICC profiles, display calibration, HDR, Night light, Color filters, or GPU color controls
Settings > Personalization > Themes Background, window colors, sounds, and cursor-related theme components Display profiles and monitor calibration

Applying a theme or changing the Windows accent color will therefore not correct a display that has a red cast, incorrect gamma, or oversaturated colors.

Is there a reset command?

Microsoft’s current procedure uses Settings and does not document a Command Prompt, PowerShell, or reg.exe command that resets every display-color setting. Avoid treating commands such as colorcpl /reset or registry-deletion instructions as Microsoft’s standard universal reset method.

If the steps above do not solve the problem, identify which layer is responsible: remove the Windows profile, disable Night light or Color filters, review HDR, reset the monitor’s on-screen picture settings, and check graphics-adapter software separately.

Windows 10 note

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. The Windows 10 paths above are included for systems still running that version, but upgrading to a supported Windows release is worth considering where possible.

FAQ

How do I restore the default display color profile in Windows 11?

Go to Settings > System > Display > Color profile, select the affected monitor, expand the unwanted custom profile, and select Remove. If another profile is listed, select it and choose Set profile.

Does Windows have a Restore defaults button for all display-color settings?

No. Windows’ current Color profile settings do not provide one universal Restore defaults button. Profiles, Night light, Color filters, HDR, HDR calibration, GPU settings, and monitor hardware settings are controlled separately.

Will Calibrate display restore my monitor’s original colors?

No. Calibrate display launches a wizard that creates a new color profile. To undo an added profile, remove it from Settings > System > Display > Color profile instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my screen still look yellow after removing a color profile?

Night light may still be enabled. Open Settings > System > Display > Night light settings and select Turn off now. Also check Color filters under Settings > Accessibility > Color filters.

Can I reset display color settings with Command Prompt or PowerShell?

Microsoft’s current instructions do not document a universal Command Prompt, PowerShell, or reg.exe command for resetting every display-color setting. Use the relevant Windows Settings page and, for external monitors, the monitor’s physical controls.

Why is HDR missing or behaving differently on my external monitor?

If a laptop is duplicating its displays, HDR may not be supported. Open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and select Extend these displays. Also confirm that HDR is enabled for the selected display.

The Bottom Line

For a Windows color-profile reset, open Settings > System > Display > Color profile, select the correct monitor, remove the unwanted profile, and set another listed profile if available. Then check Color filters, Night light, HDR, graphics-driver controls, and the monitor’s own picture settings separately. Calibration is for creating a profile—not restoring one—and there is no Microsoft-documented universal reset command.
