You can make an OBS-powered YouTube stream recover after a power cut, but no single OBS setting does it. The computer must regain power and boot, the operating system must start the right session and OBS, OBS must reconnect to YouTube, and YouTube must allow the encoder to start the broadcast. Configure and test each link in that chain; a UPS can bridge only an interruption within its available runtime.

What has to happen for the stream to restart

There are two distinct situations. If the power cut is brief and a UPS keeps the computer and network online, OBS may only need to reconnect its encoder connection. If power fails long enough to shut down the computer, recovery also depends on firmware settings, operating-system startup, and OBS launching automatically.

  1. Power returns: the UPS or utility supply provides power again.
  2. The PC boots: firmware must be configured to start the computer after AC power is restored, if it shut down.
  3. The streaming session starts: the operating system must reach the user session and make required network and audio/video sources available.
  4. OBS launches correctly: it opens the intended profile and scene collection, with the YouTube stream configured.
  5. The encoder reconnects and the broadcast starts: YouTube’s Live Control Room settings govern whether the encoder can start the broadcast automatically.

Each stage can fail independently. OBS’s Automatic Reconnect option is for a dropped encoder connection while OBS is still running; it does not power on a shut-down PC or relaunch OBS after a complete power loss. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Set the computer to recover when AC power returns

Check the BIOS or UEFI firmware

Look in the PC or motherboard manual and firmware setup for an option named something like “Restore AC Power Loss,” “Restore on AC Power Loss,” or “AC Back.” The available choices and behavior depend on the device. For example, ASUS documents a “Restore AC Power Loss” option on the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO motherboard, with “Power Off,” “Power On,” and “Last State” choices. That example does not establish that the option exists on every PC. See ASUS India’s instructions and consult the manual for your own hardware.

If your device supports it, select the behavior that will boot the PC when power returns, then test it with the actual power setup. ASUS notes that the feature may not work if power is restored immediately after an interruption, so do not assume it works without a rehearsal.

Decide what the UPS must do

A UPS can keep the PC and network equipment running through a short cut, or give them time for a controlled shutdown and later restoration. Its runtime depends on battery condition and the connected load; no universal runtime or UPS capacity can be recommended without measuring your equipment and deciding how long you need it to run. If the goal is to keep streaming during a cut, connect the modem/router as well as the PC to battery-backed outlets. APC notes that Back-UPS units return to online operation when adequate utility power returns, but the connected computer may not restart automatically and may require a BIOS setting. See the APC Back-UPS FAQ.

Configure the operating system and OBS to start streaming

Make startup reach the right streaming session

Configure your operating system’s supported startup or sign-in automation to launch the streaming user session and OBS after reboot. Confirm that the network connection, audio devices, sources, scene collection, and profile OBS needs are available at startup. The exact setup varies by operating system, edition, and device policy; follow the documentation for the system you actually use. If automatic sign-in is necessary, weigh the security consequences for that PC and account rather than enabling it by default.

Use OBS’s launch parameter

OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter, which starts streaming when OBS launches. It does not itself configure PC power recovery, log in to the operating system, or ensure that YouTube will start the broadcast. Before relying on it:

  • In OBS, verify that the intended scene collection and profile are selected and that the YouTube service or server URL and stream key are correct.
  • Use --startstreaming only once the stream configuration is ready; a launch parameter cannot correct a missing or invalid key.
  • If launching OBS through a scheduled or automated method, set its working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe, as described in the OBS Launch Parameters documentation.

The launch parameter is one part of the sequence: your operating system’s startup method still has to launch OBS after boot.

Check YouTube’s encoder and broadcast settings

YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key, and Live Control Room provides stream-management controls. Review the broadcast’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings and verify that the particular stream and key are configured for encoder auto-start. The setting controls YouTube’s side of the process; it cannot turn on your computer or open OBS. YouTube’s instructions are in Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Also check what happens to the specific broadcast if its encoder disappears for an extended outage. Do not assume every scheduled or existing broadcast behaves identically after a long interruption; confirm the relevant settings in Live Control Room.

Test the complete recovery chain

  1. Use a private or unlisted test broadcast, and arrange a controlled test that is safe for your computer and network equipment.
  2. Test a short network interruption separately from a full power loss. For the latter, cut power in a controlled way, restore it, and observe whether the PC boots.
  3. Confirm the operating system reaches the intended streaming session and that the modem/router reconnects.
  4. Check that OBS launches with the right scenes and sources, then sends video and audio to YouTube.
  5. In Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health, then verify that the viewer page recovers as expected.
  6. Repeat the test under conditions that represent the outage you need to recover from, including a longer interruption if relevant.

YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring stream health. For a backup-encoder test, it recommends stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then verifying that playback rolls over to the backup encoder. A backup encoder addresses a different failure mode: it will not boot the local OBS PC unless that encoder has its own power and connectivity. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not return

Symptom Likely point of failure What to check
The PC stays off after power returns Firmware recovery setting is absent, disabled, or behaves differently than expected. Check the PC or motherboard manual for an AC-restoration option, select the desired boot behavior if available, and test it. Firmware support varies by device.
The PC boots, but OBS does not open The operating-system startup method or user session did not launch OBS. Check the startup automation, sign-in behavior, and whether it launches the correct OBS executable and session.
OBS opens but does not start streaming The launch parameter, stream profile, or YouTube connection settings may be wrong. Confirm --startstreaming, the selected profile and scene collection, the server URL and stream key, and the automated launch working directory.
OBS says it is streaming, but YouTube has not started the broadcast The broadcast’s encoder auto-start or other Live Control Room settings may not allow the expected behavior. Review the particular stream’s auto-start and broadcast settings and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
OBS cannot reconnect after a short cut The network, modem/router, or encoder connection may still be unavailable. Confirm the network has returned and the router is powered. Use OBS Automatic Reconnect for connection loss while OBS remains running; it does not handle a powered-off PC.
The UPS shuts down before power returns The outage exceeds available backup runtime for the actual connected load. Reassess the desired runtime and total load. Include the modem/router if it must remain online; UPS runtime is equipment- and battery-dependent.
