If your LG Smart TV is frozen, restarting unexpectedly, or refusing to turn on or off, start with a power cycle—not a factory reset. LG’s documented power cycle takes the TV off power temporarily; a factory reset is more disruptive because it removes apps and personal settings. Work through the steps below in order, stopping if you notice smoke, a burnt smell, liquid inside the TV, or another sign of a possible hardware fault.
What should I try first: a restart or a factory reset?
Try a power cycle first. It is reversible and is intended to clear a temporary problem; a factory reset restores the TV to its initial settings and can remove apps, account details, saved data, and personal preferences. LG describes a reset as restoring the product to its initial settings at the time of purchase.
| Option | Best suited to | What it changes | Risk and effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power cycle | A temporary freeze, glitch, or power-state problem | Temporarily removes power; it is not a factory reset | Low; no special equipment |
| Remote check or re-pairing | The TV responds to its own button but not the remote | Checks batteries, signal, or remote pairing | Low; pairing steps vary by model |
| Software update | A software issue that may be addressed by a newer version | Installs TV software; the TV may restart during installation | Follow the model-specific instructions and do not interrupt installation |
| Reset to Initial Settings | Persistent software, app, or settings problems after less destructive steps | Restores initial settings; may remove apps, accounts, and preferences | High; prepare to set up the TV again |
| Professional service | Persistent failure or a safety-related symptom | Diagnosis and repair by support or a technician | Required when troubleshooting does not resolve the fault |
Menu names and procedures differ across LG model years and webOS versions. The paths below are based on LG USA support guidance; if a label is missing, check the instructions for your exact TV model rather than assuming a setting is available.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A useful way to choose among these options is to match the remedy to the symptom. If the TV is merely frozen or behaving as though it has retained a temporary power state, a power cycle is the least disruptive first step. If it works from the TV’s own button but not from the remote, diagnose the remote instead. App-memory messages point to a particular Quick Start+ procedure on supported newer sets. Update and reset paths depend on the model, and a reset is not an appropriate substitute for service when there are signs of physical damage.

How do I power-cycle an LG Smart TV?
Use the TV’s physical power button and remove the set from power. Merely pressing the remote’s power button is not the same procedure.
- Turn the TV off.
- Unplug its power cord from the outlet.
- Find the TV’s physical power button. Its location varies by model. Press and hold it for 30 seconds.
- Leave the TV unplugged for 5 minutes.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn the TV on.
This is LG’s documented general power-cycle sequence. It may clear a temporary power-state problem, but it does not repair failed hardware. If the TV still will not start, or the same fault quickly returns, continue with the relevant checks below rather than repeating the cycle indefinitely.
The physical-button hold and unplugged wait are separate parts of the procedure: hold the button for 30 seconds while the TV is unplugged, then leave it unplugged for the full 5 minutes before reconnecting it. The procedure does not require a special accessory. If you cannot find the button, consult the instructions for the exact model instead of trying to force or remove a panel to reach it.
What should I check if my LG TV will not turn on?
First see whether the standby light is on. Then check the power connection and try the TV’s physical power button before concluding that the set itself has failed.
- Check the standby light. If it is off, confirm that the power cord is firmly connected at both the TV and wall outlet.
- Check the outlet. Test it with another device. If the outlet has no power, check the circuit breaker as appropriate.
- Try the physical power button. Its location varies, so consult the model’s instructions if you cannot find it.
- If the physical button turns the TV on, investigate the remote. Replace its batteries, verify that they are fitted correctly, and remove anything blocking the path between the remote and TV.
If the standby light is off despite a secure connection to a working outlet, or the TV does not respond to its own button, the issue may need professional diagnosis. Do not open the TV to inspect internal components.
This sequence separates likely external causes from a TV fault. A standby light that is off makes the cord, outlet, and circuit worth checking first; a TV that starts from its own button has demonstrated that it can turn on, so the remote or its signal path deserves attention. Test the outlet with another device, but do not treat a working outlet as proof that the TV’s internal power system is healthy. If basic power checks do not restore operation, stop at that point and arrange support rather than attempting internal repairs.
If you need batteries, check the remote’s battery compartment or model instructions for the correct size before buying replacements. LG specifically recommends replacing the batteries when the TV turns on from its physical button but not the remote. Fresh batteries are a sensible, low-cost diagnostic step in that situation; they cannot solve a TV that remains unresponsive to its own power button.

If an app says it will restart to use memory more efficiently
LG recommends turning off Quick Start+ and then power-cycling the TV for the relevant memory-shortage or app-restart behavior. On supported models released after 2024 with webOS 24 or webOS 25, LG gives this path: Settings → All Settings → General → System → Additional Settings → Quick Start+. Turn the setting off, unplug the TV, wait 10 minutes, then reconnect it.
Quick Start+ and this menu path are not universal. If your TV does not show the setting, do not treat that as proof that something is wrong; check the model-specific guidance instead. LG’s recommendation specifically concerns the described memory or app-restart behavior, not every restart problem.
Use this branch when the TV displays the memory message or the problem is associated with a website or app causing the set to power off and on. Do not assume Quick Start+ is the cause of every restart loop, and do not search for a missing setting through unrelated menus if the TV is an older model. The 10-minute unplugged wait belongs to this specific Quick Start+ troubleshooting procedure; it is separate from the standard power cycle’s 5-minute wait.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf restarting began during a software update
A TV may restart automatically while installing an update. Let the installation finish and do not unplug or switch off the TV during the process. LG says a restart after a software update can take about 5 to 10 minutes.
Wait through that period before deciding that the set has become stuck. An automatic restart during installation is not, by itself, evidence of a fault. Interrupting the update by removing power can create additional problems, so do not use the standard power-cycle steps while an installation is actively underway.
If restarts continue outside an update or app warning
Do the standard power cycle, check the power cord and outlet, and look for an available model-appropriate software update. If the set still restarts, consider a factory reset only after protecting the information and settings you will need to restore. Persistent restarting after those steps is a reason to contact LG support or arrange professional service.
What if my LG TV will not turn off?
If the TV will not turn off with the remote, first check whether its physical power button can turn it off. If the physical button works, the issue is more likely in the remote, its batteries, pairing, or signal path than a basic inability of the TV to change power state. Confirm the batteries are installed correctly, replace them if needed, and remove obstructions between the remote and TV.
If you use a Magic Remote, follow the model-appropriate unpairing and pairing instructions below. If neither the remote nor the TV’s physical button can turn the set off, or it repeatedly powers itself back on, a power cycle is a reasonable low-risk first step once no update is running and there are no safety symptoms. This guide does not establish a single cause for every TV that will not turn off. If the behavior persists after the power, remote, and update checks, contact LG support or a technician instead of repeatedly resetting the TV.

What if the TV turns on but will not respond to the remote?
If the TV works from its physical button, start with the remote rather than assuming the TV’s main power system is defective. Check the batteries, their orientation, and whether anything is obstructing the signal path.
For a Magic Remote, LG’s guidance for supported models is to hold Back and Settings together for at least 5 seconds to unpair it, then press the wheel/OK button to pair it again. Some model years use different pairing combinations, so follow the instructions for your remote and TV instead of applying that combination universally.
If fresh batteries and the correct model-specific pairing procedure do not restore control, the fault may involve the remote, sensor, or another part of the system. A compatible replacement remote is relevant only after the basic checks; it will not fix a TV that fails to power on or an internal hardware fault.
Re-pairing is a low-risk step, but it is not the same as buying a new remote and is not guaranteed to solve every control problem. If the TV has a blocked sensor or a separate hardware issue, a new remote will not address it. Only consider a replacement after fresh batteries, an unobstructed signal path, and the correct pairing procedure have failed. Compatibility and button behavior can differ across LG models, so confirm that a replacement is intended for the exact TV.
How do I update LG TV software before resetting?
Check for an update using the TV’s built-in menu when available. For internet-connected TVs from 2020 onward, LG’s general path is Settings → All Settings → Support → Software Update → Check for Updates. Older models may use a different route: some use General → About This TV, and older NetCast TVs have a separate procedure.
If the TV cannot update over the internet, LG also documents a manual USB route. This requires firmware that matches the exact TV model; installing a package for another model is not a safe substitute.
- Identify the TV’s exact model.
- Download the matching firmware using LG’s model-specific support instructions.
- Extract the downloaded file.
- Create a folder named
LG_DTVat the root of a USB flash drive. - Copy the extracted
.epkfile into that folder. - Connect the drive to the TV and follow the on-screen instructions.
Do not unplug the TV or remove power during installation. The TV may restart automatically, and the post-update restart can take about 5 to 10 minutes. If the on-screen instructions do not match your model or the update does not proceed, stop and confirm the model and firmware guidance before trying again.
The USB method is a fallback when the built-in internet update route is unavailable, not a reason to skip model verification. The exact model matters because LG’s firmware is model-specific. A USB flash drive is the only additional equipment this route calls for; the standard power cycle does not need one. Do not rename or substitute a firmware package based on a similar-looking model number, and do not remove the drive or interrupt the TV while the installation is in progress. If the TV does not recognize the update or the steps shown differ, verify the model’s current LG instructions before proceeding.

When should I factory-reset an LG Smart TV?
Use Reset to Initial Settings only when less destructive steps have not helped and you are prepared to set the TV up again. A reset can resolve certain remote, software, or app problems, but it removes installed apps and personal settings; on Reset All, account information is removed and you must reinstall apps and sign in again.
Before resetting, record your Wi-Fi credentials, app sign-ins, picture settings, and any custom preferences you want to restore. Do not unplug or turn off the TV while the reset is running. When it finishes, the TV restarts and shows the initial setup screen.
| TV generation or software | General reset path in LG guidance |
|---|---|
| 2021–2025 TVs and newer supported versions | Settings → All Settings → General → System → Reset to Initial Settings |
| 2020 TVs with webOS 5.0 | Settings → All Settings → Support → Reset to Initial Settings |
| 2019 and older TVs | Settings → All Settings → General → Reset to Initial Settings |
Some newer TVs offer Reset All or Reset all except network settings. The second option can preserve network settings on supported 2024-and-later models; availability depends on the TV. Read the confirmation screen carefully before choosing, because the options do not preserve the same information.

Stop using the TV, turn it off, unplug it, and seek service if you notice smoke, a burnt smell, water or debris inside the set, strange recurring sounds, or another serious fault. Do not open the TV or attempt board-level repairs.
If the TV remains faulty after the appropriate power, outlet, remote, software, and reset checks, contact LG support or a qualified technician. LG also documents Quick Help options such as Optimize, Check Items, and LG Remote Service. Remote Service generates an access code that lets an LG support agent diagnose and troubleshoot the TV remotely. Availability and menu access can vary by model and region.
Quick Help can be a route to guided checks or remote diagnosis when the TV can still access those features. Remote Service is not a reason to keep using a set that shows smoke, liquid intrusion, a burnt smell, or another serious warning sign; unplug it and arrange service. Likewise, a replacement remote or USB drive is useful only for the specific tasks described above, not for diagnosing a suspected failed power board or other internal defect.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reboot an LG TV without the remote?
Yes. The standard power-cycle procedure uses the TV’s physical power button, so a working remote is not required. Button location varies by model; consult the model instructions if it is not obvious.
Why did my LG TV restart during an update?
LG says a TV may restart automatically while it installs software. Leave it connected to power and allow the installation to finish; interrupting an update can create additional problems. A post-update restart can take about 5 to 10 minutes.
Will a power cycle erase my apps or Wi-Fi settings?
A power cycle is different from Reset to Initial Settings: it temporarily removes power rather than restoring the TV to its original configuration. The data-loss warning applies to a factory reset, not the documented power-cycle sequence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do if my LG TV turns on from its button but not from the remote?
Check that the remote’s batteries are fresh and correctly installed, and remove anything blocking the signal path. If it is a Magic Remote, follow the pairing instructions for your model. LG recommends battery replacement in this situation; battery size varies by remote.
Can I use Quick Start+ to fix every restart loop?
No. LG’s Quick Start+ recommendation applies to described memory-shortage or app-restart behavior on supported models. The setting and menu path vary by model and webOS version.
What does LG Remote Service do?
It provides an access code that an LG support agent can use to diagnose and troubleshoot the TV remotely. It is a support option, not a substitute for unplugging the TV and seeking service when there are smoke, liquid, or other safety concerns.
When should I avoid trying another reset?
Stop troubleshooting and unplug the TV if you notice smoke, a burnt smell, water or debris inside, strange recurring sounds, or another serious fault. If the documented power, remote, software, and appropriate reset steps do not resolve the problem, contact LG support or a qualified technician.

The Bottom Line
For most temporary problems, start with LG’s 30-second physical-button hold and 5-minute unplugged power cycle. Diagnose power and remote symptoms before buying accessories, use only model-matched firmware, and reserve Reset to Initial Settings for persistent problems after less destructive steps. If the TV shows a safety warning or still fails after these checks, unplug it when appropriate and arrange professional service rather than opening the set.
