You can make a YouTube stream recover after some interruptions, but no single OBS or YouTube setting can guarantee that a live broadcast returns after a full power cut. For a local camera or production, power, internet, computer, source, encoder, and the YouTube event must all recover. For prerecorded video, a cloud service can keep the stream independent of your home computer and power.

What has to recover after a power cut

A stream key and stream URL connect an encoder to YouTube; they do not restart equipment or provide backup power. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls let the encoder start or stop a broadcast, but do not guarantee that an event remains available after a long interruption. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Think of recovery as a chain: mains power or backup power, network equipment and internet, the computer and video source, the encoder output, and the YouTube event and public watch page. If any link fails, an OBS indicator that says “streaming” alone does not prove viewers can watch.

Prepare a local PC and OBS setup

Configure YouTube and protect the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the intended stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS or your hardware encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
  2. Review the broadcast’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube says these settings can be carried over when stream settings are reused, so check them on each new event rather than assuming they match your intentions.

Enable OBS reconnect for network drops

In OBS, open Settings > Advanced > Automatically Reconnect and enable automatic reconnect. OBS community troubleshooting guidance identifies this as useful when OBS is still running but its network output has dropped. It cannot turn on a computer that lost power; treat it as a limited reconnect aid, not a full power-cut recovery system. See the OBS community discussion.

Understand scheduled-event behavior

A scheduled YouTube broadcast has its own event state. The OBS community guide says auto-start can take a scheduled broadcast live when streaming begins, while auto-stop ends it when streaming stops. It also notes that a broadcast may eventually end after no stream is received for multiple hours. After a long outage, check whether the event is still active; reconnecting OBS does not necessarily revive an event that has ended.

Plan for power and startup

  • For a short outage: a UPS may keep the computer and the required modem/router or other network equipment running long enough to bridge it. Estimate the combined load and the runtime you need; without those figures, a reliable UPS capacity cannot be specified.
  • For a longer outage: check the manual for your exact computer or motherboard for a setting that powers the system on when AC power is restored. Support and menu names vary by model; do not assume the setting exists or behaves the same across devices.
  • For unattended restart: consider whether the computer can log in and launch OBS and its source safely after boot. Configure automatic login or startup applications only if appropriate for your security setup, then test the sequence with your equipment.

A UPS only helps if it powers every device needed for the stream and has enough runtime for the actual load. A UPS included in an Indian court-streaming procurement specification is evidence of use in that particular installation, not a home sizing recommendation: the project document.

Check stream quality and test the recovery chain

Set quality to what your upload connection can sustain consistently, not merely the highest setting your encoder offers. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; these are general recommendations, not India-specific figures. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance, run an upload speed test, and test with representative motion and audio. Monitor YouTube stream health rather than relying on a speed test alone.

  1. Schedule a controlled computer restart and verify that the computer, source, OBS, and output all return as intended.
  2. Test a network interruption while the computer remains on to confirm OBS reconnect behavior.
  3. If safe, test a brief power interruption and verify which devices recover and whether the encoder resumes.
  4. Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and event status. Then open the public watch page from a separate device or browser session.
  5. Record whether the same event returned or whether you needed to select or start another event. Do not infer a recovery time or guarantee from a test of a different interruption type.

Diagnose the failure by what went offline

What failed What may help What to verify
Internet or ingest briefly dropped while the computer stayed on OBS automatic reconnect may retry the outgoing connection. Confirm OBS is connected to the intended stream key and YouTube reports a healthy feed.
Mains power went out A UPS may bridge a short outage; otherwise the computer must power back on and restart the source and encoder. Check router/modem connectivity, computer boot, source availability, and OBS or encoder startup.
The YouTube event ended during the interruption Reconnect the encoder only if the event can still accept the feed; otherwise use current Live Control Room controls to select or start the appropriate event. Inspect event status and the public watch page. Do not treat the encoder’s “streaming” status as proof the broadcast is public.
Prerecorded stream needs to continue while the site is without power A cloud-based service avoids dependence on a powered-on home encoder for that prerecorded stream. Confirm the service is suitable for prerecorded content; this is not a way to restore a local camera or on-site production.

Choose an approach for your stream

The right design depends on whether you need a live camera or can stream prerecorded video, how long outages last, how much production control must remain on site, which devices need power, and whether the YouTube event stays active.

Approach Best fit Recovery depends on Main limitation
StreamNeo cloud streaming Prerecorded video that should play continuously on YouTube The cloud service and internet availability It plays uploaded videos; it does not restore a live camera or local production.
Local PC and OBS with auto-reconnect Local camera, scenes, or production controlled on site PC, source, network, encoder, and YouTube event recovering Reconnect cannot boot an unpowered PC or guarantee event state.
Local PC, OBS, and UPS Local production where short power dips are the main concern UPS runtime must cover the combined encoder and network load Battery runtime is limited and depends on equipment load.

Or let it run in the cloud

For prerecorded video, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
