To make a church YouTube livestream recover after a power cut, you need the streaming computer to restart, OBS to open and reconnect, the network to be ready, and YouTube to accept the returning encoder feed. Configure and test each part separately: no single OBS setting or UPS guarantees that the public broadcast will resume.
What has to recover after the power returns
A YouTube encoder stream depends on the encoder sending video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. Restarting OBS and making the YouTube broadcast live are related, but are not always the same action. Your recovery chain may include:
- Power: The computer, modem/router, cameras, capture devices, and audio equipment need power.
- Computer startup: The streaming PC must boot after power is restored.
- OBS startup: OBS must open and attempt to stream.
- Network readiness: The internet connection must be available when OBS connects, or OBS must retry successfully after it becomes available.
- YouTube broadcast state: The broadcast must accept the encoder feed and be live to viewers.
- Production sources: Cameras, capture devices, and audio must resume correctly.
A failure at any one of these points can leave the stream offline or show a live broadcast with missing video or audio.

A March 21, 2024 OBS forum discussion describes adding the --startstreaming argument to an OBS shortcut and using the Windows Startup folder or Task Scheduler. This is community guidance, not an official guarantee across all OBS and Windows versions. Verify the argument and behavior on the church’s installed versions before relying on it. - Confirm Windows actually restarts after power returns. Some PCs remain off after an outage; whether a machine powers back on can depend on its firmware and configuration. The sources cited here do not establish universal BIOS/UEFI instructions, so check the computer manufacturer’s guidance for the specific model.
- Configure OBS to launch at startup. Use the Windows Startup folder or Task Scheduler, as described in the forum discussion. Test whether OBS starts without requiring a person to sign in; behavior can differ by Windows configuration.
- Arrange for OBS to start streaming. The forum discussion suggests the
--startstreaminglaunch argument. Test it with the installed OBS build and the intended scene collection and streaming destination. - Plan for a late network connection. A PC and OBS may start before the modem/router has restored internet. Use an appropriate delay or retry approach, then test it with the actual network. The discussion does not establish a universally reliable delay value or script.
Configure YouTube’s encoder and broadcast settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, check the stream settings for the relevant stream or scheduled broadcast. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key; the encoder sends the feed, while the broadcast’s state determines whether viewers see it as live. YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop settings, but scheduled streams may still require clicking Go live after the preview appears. Confirm the behavior for the church’s specific workflow rather than assuming OBS can override every Live Control Room state.
- Open the stream or scheduled broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and check its auto-start setting.
- Confirm that OBS is configured for the correct YouTube server URL, stream key, and intended broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to connect an encoder.
- Decide whether the broadcast is meant to start automatically or whether a person will click Go live after checking the preview. Scheduled broadcasts can require that separate action.
- Keep the stream key private. It is a credential; do not expose it in screenshots, public documents, or shared instructions.
Verify OBS, the public stream, and every production source
After a simulated reboot or real outage, do not treat an OBS reconnect message as proof that viewers can see the service. Open Live Control Room and verify the preview and broadcast status, then check the public watch page if appropriate. Confirm the picture, audio, and intended scene independently.

OBS forum reports describe cases where reconnection did not resolve a YouTube-side disconnect, and where a camera source did not recover just because streaming restarted. These are user reports, not evidence of how often failures occur or a guarantee that every setup behaves the same way. See the reports on network or camera power failure, internet-outage reconnects, and auto-reconnect failures.

- List the equipment required for usable video and sound: streaming PC, router/modem, cameras, capture devices, and audio equipment.
- Simulate a power interruption in a controlled way, then allow the PC and network equipment to restart.
- Confirm Windows starts, OBS opens, and the encoder feed reaches the intended YouTube stream.
- Check Live Control Room and the viewer-facing stream for the correct broadcast state, picture, and sound.
- If recovery from delayed internet is important, test with the network unavailable during startup and restored afterward.
- Record what failed and adjust the relevant part of the chain; repeat until the actual setup behaves as intended.
What a UPS can and cannot do
A UPS may keep connected equipment powered through some short outages, but whether it helps depends on the connected load and the runtime needed. The available sources do not establish a specific model or capacity, so size any purchase for the church’s actual equipment and required runtime. A UPS does not restore an internet connection, configure Windows or OBS to start, ensure YouTube makes the broadcast live, or guarantee that cameras and other sources recover.
