If you received a notice that your personal information was exposed in a data breach, first find out exactly what was involved. Then secure any affected accounts, check for signs of misuse, and take credit-protection steps if the exposed information calls for them. A breach does not by itself mean your information has already been used.
Verify the notice through a company website or phone number you already know, not an unexpected message offering help. For U.S. consumer guidance tailored to the exposed information, use the Federal Trade Commission’s IdentityTheft.gov/databreach.
1. Identify what information was exposed
Read the notice carefully and note which organization, accounts, and types of information it names. The response differs depending on whether the exposed data included login credentials, financial information, or information that could be used to impersonate you. Follow the notice’s instructions, but reach the organization using a known website or contact channel if you need to confirm that the notice is genuine.
The FTC’s What To Do After a Data Breach guidance and its tailored tool at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach can help match next steps to the information involved. Keep the notice so you can check any enrollment deadlines or service details it lists.

2. Secure exposed passwords and important accounts
If a password may have been exposed, change it promptly on the affected account and on every other account where you reused it. Start with your email account: access to email can let someone reset passwords on other services. Give each account a different password; a password manager can help generate and keep track of unique passwords, as described in the FTC’s account-protection guidance.
- Prioritize email, banking, credit-card, payment-app, and other sensitive accounts.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (also called multifactor authentication) wherever the service offers it. The second step might be a passcode, an authenticator app, or a physical security key; choose a method the account supports and make sure you understand its recovery options. The FTC says, “Security keys are the strongest method of two-factor authentication because they don’t use credentials that hackers can steal,” comparing the methods discussed in its two-factor authentication guidance.
- Never give a verification code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Use the service’s own app or website to manage security settings.
A physical security key is optional, not a requirement, and works only with services that support it. Keep the account’s recovery options current before relying on any second factor.

3. Check for unfamiliar activity
Review statements, bills, and relevant credit reports for accounts or transactions you do not recognize. Focus on the accounts and data types named in the notice, and continue checking them over time. If you find signs that someone has used your information to commit identity theft, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the personalized recovery plan. The FTC explains warning signs and response options in What To Know About Identity Theft.
4. Choose a credit protection option if appropriate
If the exposed information could be used to open credit in your name, consider a credit freeze or fraud alert. Both are free according to the FTC, but they work differently. A freeze blocks prospective lenders from accessing your credit report, making it harder to open new credit; you must lift it when a lender needs access. A fraud alert asks lenders to verify your identity before granting credit.

5. If an account has been taken over, act on that account urgently
Unauthorized activity, changed recovery details, or an inability to sign in may indicate an account takeover, which needs a direct response beyond general breach precautions.

- Change the account password if you can still sign in.
- Sign out of other devices or sessions, then enable two-factor authentication.
- Check that the recovery email address and phone number belong to you.
- If you cannot access the account, use the provider’s official account-recovery process. Reach it through the provider’s known website or app, not through an unsolicited recovery link.

If the organization offers free credit monitoring or identity theft insurance, check the notice for which information is covered, how to enroll, and how long the service lasts. The FTC recommends taking advantage of these services when they are offered after a breach. The guidance cited here does not establish that you need to buy a paid monitoring subscription.

Keep the breach notice and records of steps you take, such as account changes and reports. Continue watching the affected accounts and follow official instructions from the breached organization.
