On many Samsung refrigerators, press and hold Filter Reset (or Filter Reset (3 sec)) for three seconds. If your panel has no such button, the reset may be a secondary function of another control, or the steps may be menu-based. The exact procedure varies by model, so use the matching Samsung manual if the controls below do not match your fridge.
Reset the filter light on a standard Samsung control panel
- Find the control labeled Filter Reset or Filter Reset (3 sec).
- Press and hold it for three seconds. The filter indicator should reset.
- If there is no Filter Reset button, check the manual for your exact model. On some models, Samsung identifies Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water as the control with a secondary reset function.
Samsung’s US instructions and Canadian instructions both emphasize that reset controls vary between models.
Reset it on a Family Hub refrigerator
On a Family Hub touchscreen, open Apps > Fridge Manager > Fridge Settings > Water Filter > Reset. Follow any on-screen confirmation; Samsung Canada’s instructions include tapping Proceed.

Older models may use a different menu
Samsung lists separate menu-based procedures for the older RF4289 and RSG309. These involve opening Settings, selecting Water Filter, moving through the displayed pages to the reset control, holding until the status changes, and saving. Do not assume this sequence applies to other models; follow the instructions for the model number on your refrigerator.
What the filter light means
The light is a filter-life reminder, not a sensor confirming that the filter is clogged or in good condition. Samsung describes the reminder as running on an approximately six-month timer and says to reset it when a new filter is installed. That interval is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee of remaining filter life: water quality and dispenser use can affect when replacement is needed.

Resetting the indicator only clears the reminder. It does not replace the filter or verify its condition. Samsung’s US guidance recommends replacement every six months and resetting the light after installation; its Canadian guidance notes that local water conditions and use can change replacement timing.
If the light will not reset
- Check the exact model’s manual. Reset controls differ, and a button may have a secondary function. Touchscreen models use menu steps rather than the common three-second hold.
- Check the new filter installation. Make sure it is seated and locked according to the instructions for that filter family. Samsung notes that slow water flow can point to installation trouble or a clogged filter.
- Do not rely on the light alone. A filter may need replacement even if the indicator is not blinking. Use the replacement schedule and the filter’s condition as directed by Samsung.

Identify the right replacement filter before ordering
Samsung lists filter families including HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1, but the correct cartridge depends on the refrigerator. Check the model manual or the model number printed on the existing cartridge, then use Samsung’s filter-finding guidance to confirm compatibility. If you have just installed the correct new filter, the light likely needs resetting—not another filter purchase.

Turning off the reminder function completely
Resetting the timer is different from disabling the reminder. Samsung Hong Kong describes a two-button method for turning off the change-filter function, but warns that its directions are for Hong Kong products and that button sequences vary by market. Do not apply that regional sequence to a US refrigerator or another model without checking its local support instructions. Samsung’s Hong Kong page describes the regional option; the main US instructions focus on resetting the reminder after filter installation.

Red Filter Reset alert on certain UK refrigerators without a water filter
Samsung UK describes a separate issue affecting certain RS70F, RS80F, and RS90F refrigerators manufactured before July 2025: a red Filter Reset alert may appear on models without a water filter. Samsung’s page, updated 19 February 2026, gives a SmartThings software-update path and a model-specific way to dismiss the alert. Follow the current instructions for the affected model and market rather than using ordinary filter-reset steps.
