Chrome has a built-in reset that returns many browser settings to their original defaults without requiring Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Registry Editor. The procedure is the same in Windows 11 and Windows 10, and it applies to the Chrome profile currently selected.

A standard settings reset is not a Windows reset and does not completely erase Chrome. Your saved bookmarks and passwords remain, while settings such as the search engine, homepage, site permissions, cookies, extensions, and themes are restored or changed.

Reset Google Chrome settings from the Settings menu

Use these steps in either Windows 11 or Windows 10:

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Select the More button (⋮) in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. In the left sidebar, select Reset settings.
  5. Select Restore settings to their original defaults.
  6. Read the confirmation message, then select Reset settings.

The complete Chrome menu path is:

More ⋮ > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults > Reset settings

Open Chrome’s reset page directly

If you prefer not to navigate through the Settings menu, enter this address in Chrome’s address bar:

chrome://settings/reset

Press Enter, select Restore settings to their original defaults, and then select Reset settings.

This is an internal Chrome settings page, not a Windows command. Do not enter it in Command Prompt or PowerShell.

What the reset changes

Chrome resets settings in the active browser profile. Google lists these areas as being returned to their defaults or otherwise changed:

Chrome area What can change
Search The default search engine can be restored to its default setting.
Startup and tabs The homepage and startup tabs can change.
New Tab page The New Tab page returns to its default configuration.
Pinned tabs Pinned tabs can be removed.
Site permissions Content settings, including permissions for pop-ups and microphone access, can be reset.
Cookies and site data Cookies and related site-data settings can be changed.
Extensions and themes Extension and theme settings can be reset. Some extensions may need to be turned on again afterward.

If Chrome Sync is enabled, Google says the changes can apply to the same Chrome profile on other devices where you are signed in. Therefore, do not assume that the reset affects only this Windows computer.

What a normal Chrome reset does not delete

The in-Chrome settings reset does not delete or change your:

  • Saved bookmarks
  • Saved passwords

It is also not a complete profile reset. Google specifically notes that some settings, including fonts and accessibility settings, are not deleted by this procedure. A reset should therefore not be described as wiping Chrome or restoring every preference to factory condition.

Resetting settings is not the same as deleting browsing data

Chrome has a separate Delete browsing data feature. That tool is used to remove items such as browsing history, cached files, cookies, and other selected profile data.

The settings reset is intended to correct unwanted or incorrect browser configuration. It is not a general-purpose tool for erasing your browsing history or every item stored in the Chrome profile. If you need to remove browsing data, open:

chrome://settings/clearBrowserData

Review the available time range and data categories carefully before confirming deletion.

Review extensions after resetting Chrome

A reset does not prove that every unwanted extension has been permanently removed. Google advises checking extensions after the reset:

  1. Select More (⋮).
  2. Select Extensions.
  3. Select Manage extensions.
  4. Turn on only extensions you recognize and trust.
  5. Remove unfamiliar or unwanted extensions using Remove.

If a suspicious extension returns, keeps changing settings, or cannot be removed normally, another program or an administrator policy may be controlling Chrome.

If unwanted software changes Chrome back

Repeated homepage changes, search-engine changes, redirects, unwanted toolbars, recurring extensions, or persistent pop-ups can indicate unwanted software installed in Windows. Resetting Chrome may correct the symptoms temporarily, but the software can change the browser again.

On Windows 11, check installed programs here:

Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps

On Windows 10, open the same general area through:

Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features

Review the list for an application you do not recognize, select it, and choose Uninstall. Be cautious with unfamiliar programs that appeared around the time the Chrome problem began. Do not remove software merely because its name is unfamiliar if it is clearly supplied by your employer, hardware manufacturer, or security provider.

Check whether an organization manages Chrome

Work, school, security, and device-management policies can override Chrome settings. Resetting Chrome will not remove a setting enforced by an administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Select More (⋮).
  3. Look at the bottom of the menu for Managed by your organization.

For more information, enter:

chrome://management

To see policies installed in Chrome, enter:

chrome://policy

If this is a work or school computer, contact the administrator before changing anything. If it is your personal computer and the management notice is unexpected, investigate unfamiliar accounts, applications, extensions, and policies rather than repeatedly resetting Chrome.

If Chrome Settings will not open

When the Settings menu is missing, crashes, or will not load, Google’s documented fallback is to uninstall Chrome, download it again from Google, and reinstall it.

Uninstall Chrome in Windows 11

  1. Close every Chrome window.
  2. Select Start, then Settings.
  3. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  4. Find Google Chrome and select its More button (⋮).
  5. Select Uninstall, then select Uninstall again.
  6. When Windows asks whether to allow the app to make changes, select Yes.

Uninstall Chrome in Windows 10

  1. Close all Chrome windows and tabs.
  2. Select Start, then Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Under Apps & features, select Google Chrome.
  5. Select Uninstall, then confirm by selecting Uninstall again.

On Windows 10, the uninstall dialog includes Also delete your browsing data. Selecting it removes local Chrome profile information such as bookmarks and history. This is different from the normal in-Chrome reset, which preserves saved bookmarks and passwords.

Uninstalling Chrome is therefore not automatically the safer version of resetting settings. If your goal is only to restore browser settings, use Chrome’s reset page first. If you are deleting local profile data, verify that important information is available through Chrome Sync or another backup before confirming.

Do you need a Windows command to reset Chrome?

No. Google’s supported procedure uses Chrome’s interface:

More > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults > Reset settings

Registry-editing instructions found elsewhere generally address Chrome policies, corrupted profiles, or administrator restrictions. They are not the normal method for resetting Chrome settings and can create additional problems if used incorrectly.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Windows 10 and Windows 11: is the process different?

No. Chrome’s reset path is the same on both supported versions. Google’s current requirements list Windows 10 or later for Intel-based Windows PCs. ARM-based Chrome requires Windows 11 or later. These Windows requirements do not create a separate reset procedure.

FAQ

Will resetting Chrome delete my bookmarks and passwords?

No. Google’s standard Chrome settings reset does not delete or change saved bookmarks or saved passwords. Uninstalling Chrome and selecting the Windows 10 option to delete browsing data is a separate action.

Does resetting Chrome remove malware?

Not necessarily. It can undo browser changes caused by unwanted software, but a Windows program or policy may change Chrome back. Check installed apps, extensions, and Chrome policies if the problem returns.

Will the reset remove all Chrome extensions?

No. Review extensions afterward through More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Google says some extensions may need to be turned on again, and unwanted extensions may need to be disabled or uninstalled separately.

Does a Chrome reset affect other computers?

It can. If Chrome Sync is enabled, Google says reset changes apply to the profile on devices where you are signed in and syncing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if Chrome says it is managed by my organization?

Open chrome://management and chrome://policy to inspect management information and installed policies. On a work or school device, ask the administrator for help. On a personal device, investigate unfamiliar software, accounts, and extensions.

Can I reset Chrome without opening Settings?

Yes. Enter chrome://settings/reset in Chrome’s address bar, then select Restore settings to their original defaults and Reset settings.

The Bottom Line

For Windows 10 and Windows 11, use chrome://settings/reset or follow More > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults. The standard reset restores key Chrome configuration without deleting saved bookmarks or passwords. If settings change back, check extensions, installed Windows applications, and organization policies instead of repeatedly resetting the browser.
