To reset a YouTube stream key, open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Stream, select Reset beside the current key, then replace the old key in your encoder, such as OBS. You can keep your encoder profile and workflow; the change is to the credential used to connect to YouTube. Reset before a broadcast if uninterrupted continuity matters, because YouTube does not specify whether resetting affects a stream already in progress or exactly when the old key stops working.
What a stream key reset changes
YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Your encoder uses the key, along with YouTube’s Live server URL, to send its feed to your channel. Resetting generates a new key for the current stream settings, so you must update the credential stored in your encoder.
This is not the same as rebuilding your encoder setup. YouTube’s reset instructions tell you to update the encoder with the new key; they do not instruct you to delete or recreate scenes, sources, profiles, or other encoder-side configuration. YouTube does not explicitly guarantee that every setting persists, so keep the claim narrow: preserve your existing workflow and replace the key where the encoder stores it.
Reset the key and update your encoder
- Sign in with the right channel permissions. The channel owner or a manager must reset the key. Editors and viewers do not have permission.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab. In Live Control Room, choose Stream on the left and locate Stream key.
- Reset the key. Select Reset beside the hidden key.
- Copy the newly generated key. Treat it as a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Replace the saved key in your encoder. Open the encoder’s YouTube or stream settings, select the intended YouTube stream, and paste in the new key. Keep the server URL configured as required; YouTube identifies the server URL and key as connection details for the encoder.
- Check the selected stream and key before going live. Confirm the encoder is using the intended stream settings and the replacement key, then start the feed.
The exact encoder menu names vary by software. In OBS, for example, look in the stream settings for the service and stream key; updating that value does not require recreating scenes. If your encoder connects through a YouTube account integration instead of a manually entered key, follow that encoder’s connection flow and verify that it is using the current YouTube stream settings.

Reset now, or reuse a stream key?
| Your goal | Use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A key may have been exposed, or you need a new credential for the current stream settings | Reset the current key in Live Control Room | Replace the old value in the encoder before the next broadcast |
| You want a repeatable encoder connection for future streams | Use a custom stream key or YouTube’s Reuse settings option when creating a new stream | Confirm which stream and key are selected in both YouTube and the encoder |
Reusing settings can carry forward prior stream metadata, settings, and key, helping maintain a familiar workflow. It is not a substitute for rotating a key that may be compromised: if you need a new credential, reset it and update the encoder.
Will resetting interrupt a live stream or invalidate the old key immediately?
YouTube’s published instructions do not specify whether a stream already in progress keeps ingesting after a reset, whether the reset causes a temporary interruption, or exactly how quickly the previous key is revoked. Do not rely on an active feed continuing unchanged. If continuity matters, rotate the key before the broadcast, allow time to update and verify the encoder, and avoid resetting during a critical live event.

If something goes wrong
- You cannot see or select Reset: Check that you are signed in as the channel owner or a manager. Editor and viewer roles cannot reset the key.
- The encoder will not connect after the reset: Confirm you copied the newly generated key completely and replaced the old one in the encoder. Check that the encoder is sending to the intended stream and that its YouTube Live server URL is configured.
- The feed goes to the wrong stream: Check the stream/key selection in the encoder and the corresponding stream settings in Live Control Room before starting again.
- You are streaming from a webcam: The key-reset instructions apply to encoder or mobile streams, not webcam streams. Use the appropriate webcam workflow rather than looking for an encoder stream key.
