Windows 11 does not include one universal Reset mouse settings button. Mouse buttons, speed, scrolling, pointer appearance, accessibility features, touchpad behavior, and device profiles are controlled in different places.
To restore a conventional Windows 11 mouse setup, reset the individual settings below. The current Windows 11 path is Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse—not the older Windows 10 Settings > Devices > Mouse path. Microsoft’s Windows input-device instructions describe these separate controls.
1. Restore the main mouse settings
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Restore the settings shown in the table.
| Setting | Value for a conventional default setup |
|---|---|
| Primary mouse button | Left |
| Mouse pointer speed | The middle/default position; Microsoft’s underlying default speed is 10 on a 1–20 scale |
| Roll the mouse wheel to scroll | Multiple lines at a time |
| Lines to scroll at a time | 3 |
| Scroll inactive windows when hovering over them | Set according to the normal behavior you want; Microsoft documents the control but does not specify one universal default for this toggle |
| Scrolling direction | Down motion scrolls down, if this option appears and scrolling was reversed |
Microsoft documents 3 lines as the Windows system default for wheel scrolling. If the value keeps changing to 15 lines, an OEM utility, another application, policy, or synchronization may be applying the change. See Microsoft’s mouse input documentation for the scroll default.
2. Reset settings in Mouse Properties
On the same Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse page, select Additional mouse settings. This opens the classic Mouse Properties dialog.

Buttons tab
On the Buttons tab:
- Set the button configuration so the left button is the primary button.
- Move Double-click speed to the middle/default position.
- Turn ClickLock off unless you deliberately use it.
There is no reset button on this tab. Each option must be changed individually.
Pointers tab
- Select the Pointers tab.
- Under Scheme, choose Windows Default (system scheme).
- Select Apply, then OK.
If only one pointer is incorrect, select it under Customize and choose Use Default, if that button is available. This is useful when a cursor was replaced manually without changing the entire scheme.
Pointer Options tab
Check the options on Pointer Options. For the usual Windows setup, turn off:
- Automatically move pointer to the default button in a dialog box
- Display pointer trails
- Hide pointer while typing
- Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key
Windows documents pointer trails and the hide-while-typing behavior as disabled by default. The mouse-speed setting on this dialog corresponds to the same underlying 1–20 scale, where 10 is the documented default. See Microsoft’s SystemParametersInfo documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWheel tab
- Select the Wheel tab.
- For vertical scrolling, select The following number of lines at a time.
- Enter 3.
- Leave horizontal scrolling unchanged unless the mouse has a tilt wheel or another horizontal-scrolling feature.
- Select OK.
3. Restore pointer size and color
- Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch.
- Set Size to 1.
- Set Mouse pointer style to White.
These controls are separate from the pointer scheme in Mouse Properties. Changing the scheme does not necessarily return a large or colored pointer to its default size and color. Microsoft’s Accessibility instructions identify the controls and white pointer option.

4. Turn off Mouse Keys if they were enabled
Mouse Keys allows the numeric keypad to move the pointer and can make a physical mouse appear to behave incorrectly.
- Go to Start > Settings > Accessibility > Mouse.
- Turn Mouse keys off unless you intentionally use the feature.
You can also check Start > Settings > Accessibility > Text cursor. Text-cursor indicators affect text-entry areas and are separate from the physical mouse pointer, so they should not be confused with mouse settings.
5. Refresh Windows Explorer if the pointer still looks wrong
If you selected Windows Default (system scheme) but the displayed pointer did not change, first select Apply and OK to save the setting. Then refresh the Windows shell:

Restarting Explorer refreshes the desktop and taskbar. It does not reset mouse settings, so save the settings before performing this step.
6. Reset touchpad settings separately
On a laptop, the touchpad has its own controls at Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.

Mouse settings do not necessarily restore touchpad sensitivity, speed, tapping, gestures, or scrolling. If the problem occurs only on the laptop’s built-in touchpad, check that page rather than changing the ordinary mouse settings.
7. Check mouse software that can override Windows
If a setting returns after restarting, signing in, waking the computer, or changing a profile, Windows may not be the component applying it. Check software such as:
- Gaming-mouse configuration utilities
- OEM control panels
- Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center
- Touchpad control software
- Accessibility utilities
- Device-specific DPI, button, polling-rate, or profile managers
Look for saved profiles that change button assignments, DPI, scrolling, acceleration, or polling rate. Make the desired change in the utility as well as in Windows, or disable the profile that keeps overwriting the Windows setting.
8. Check Windows Backup synchronization
Windows Backup can back up and restore several mouse settings, including the primary button, pointer speed, wheel-scroll mode, scroll-line count, inactive-window scrolling, and pointer style. Microsoft’s Windows Backup settings catalog lists these settings.
If a setting changes after signing in with a Microsoft account or setting up another Windows device, open Windows Backup settings and check whether synchronization is restoring the old configuration. Otherwise, a manual reset may appear to work only until the next sign-in or device setup.

Default mouse checklist
For a conventional Windows 11 desktop setup, use these values:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Category | Default-style value |
|---|---|
| Primary button | Left |
| Pointer speed | 10 on the underlying 1–20 scale |
| Wheel scrolling | Multiple lines; 3 lines at a time |
| Pointer scheme | Windows Default (system scheme) |
| Pointer color | White |
| Pointer size | 1 |
| Pointer trails | Off |
| Hide pointer while typing | Off |
| CTRL pointer location | Off |
| Automatically move pointer to default button | Off, unless intentionally enabled |
| Mouse Keys | Off, unless intentionally used |
Microsoft documents the numeric speed and pointer-trail and hide-while-typing defaults in its SystemParametersInfo documentation; its mouse input documentation gives the wheel-scroll default. Windows does not publish one consolidated default-value table for every mouse and accessibility toggle.

Do not look for a universal Reset button
Windows 11 exposes separate mouse controls rather than one command that resets every mouse-related setting.
Do not use Reset this PC
Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC reinstalls Windows and can remove applications, settings, and—depending on the selected option—personal files. It is not a mouse-settings reset. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance.
Do not delete the entire mouse registry key
Deleting registry keys is not Microsoft’s supported general reset procedure. It can remove unrelated per-user configuration and may not affect settings controlled by drivers, vendor software, policies, or Windows Backup. Restore the individual controls through Settings and Mouse Properties instead.

FAQ
Does Windows 11 have a one-click mouse reset?
No. Windows 11 separates mouse buttons, speed, scrolling, pointer appearance, pointer behavior, and accessibility settings. Restore each applicable group manually.
What is the default mouse scroll setting in Windows 11?
The documented Windows default is 3 lines at a time. Choose Multiple lines at a time and set the number of lines to 3.
What is the default Windows 11 mouse pointer speed?
Microsoft documents the underlying mouse-speed value as 10 on a scale from 1 to 20. The Settings slider may not show that number, so use its middle/default position.
How do I restore the normal mouse pointer?
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings, select the Pointers tab, choose Windows Default (system scheme), and select Apply and OK. For appearance, set pointer size to 1 and style to White under Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch.
Why do my mouse settings keep reverting?
A gaming-mouse utility, OEM control panel, Mouse and Keyboard Center, accessibility software, policy, or Windows Backup synchronization may be applying the old values again. Check those sources if the change does not survive a restart or sign-in.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal mouse reset in Windows 11. Start with Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse, then use Additional mouse settings for the classic pointer and wheel controls. Restore the pointer under Accessibility, turn off Mouse Keys if necessary, and check vendor utilities or Windows Backup if the old settings return.
