On Windows 11, the built-in factory-reset procedure is called Reset this PC. You can start it from Start > Settings > System > Recovery and choose whether to keep your personal files or erase the laptop completely.

A reset removes installed applications and resets Windows settings. It does not always restore the exact software image shipped by the laptop manufacturer. If you need the manufacturer’s original utilities and customizations, check whether the reset wizard offers Restore preinstalled apps, or use the manufacturer’s dedicated recovery media.

Before resetting your Windows 11 laptop

A reset can remove important data, applications, and settings. Complete these checks before selecting the final reset option:

  1. Back up your files. Copy documents, pictures, videos, downloads, browser data, and any files stored outside OneDrive to an external drive or cloud storage.
  2. Export application data. Save password-manager vaults, email archives, game saves, license keys, and two-factor authentication recovery codes where applicable.
  3. Make sure you can sign in again. You will need your Microsoft account or local-account credentials after the reset.
  4. Find your BitLocker recovery key. An encrypted laptop may request this key during recovery. For a personal Microsoft account, check Microsoft’s recovery-key page. A work or school device may require its administrator to provide the key.
  5. Connect the charger. Do not begin a reset on a nearly empty battery.
  6. Disconnect unnecessary external devices. Leave the keyboard, mouse, and network connection connected if needed, but remove drives that you do not want accidentally selected or erased.

Choose the right reset option

Option What it does Best for
Keep my files Reinstalls Windows, keeps personal files such as documents and pictures, but removes installed apps and resets settings. Repairing Windows while retaining your personal data.
Remove everything Reinstalls Windows and removes personal files, applications, and settings. Preparing the laptop for sale, donation, recycling, or a completely fresh start.

Keep my files does not keep your programs. You will need to reinstall desktop applications, games, drivers that Windows does not automatically provide, and other software afterward.

How to reset a Windows 11 laptop from Settings

  1. Open Start and select Settings. You can also press Windows+I.
  2. Select System in the left pane.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Under Recovery options, find Reset this PC and select Reset PC.
  5. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.
  6. Choose a reinstall method if Windows offers the choice:
Reinstall method How it works Use it when
Cloud download Downloads a fresh Windows installation from Microsoft. It includes the latest version and updates available through the reset process. Local Windows installation files may be corrupted or missing, and you have a reliable internet connection.
Local reinstall Uses Windows installation files already stored on the laptop. You have slow or limited internet access. It may not include the latest updates.
  1. Review the displayed reset information. If you selected Remove everything, open Change settings if it is available and review the data-erasure choices.
  2. Confirm the options and select Reset or the equivalent confirmation button.

The laptop will restart and reinstall Windows. The process commonly takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the selected method and the laptop’s storage and internet speed.

Settings to review before a complete wipe

Clean data

With Remove everything, the wizard may offer Clean data. Enable it when selling, donating, or recycling the laptop. Windows removes files and cleans the drive so recovery is harder for the next person.

Microsoft says this consumer feature does not meet government or industry data-erasure standards. If the laptop contains regulated, highly confidential, or otherwise sensitive information, use an approved data-destruction process instead.

Delete files from all drives

If the wizard offers a choice between only the Windows drive and all drives, select all drives only if you have backed up every partition and deliberately want to erase additional internal storage. Do not select it merely because you want to reinstall Windows on the system drive.

Restore preinstalled apps

If Restore preinstalled apps is available and enabled, Windows can apply manufacturer customizations and reinstall applications originally supplied with the laptop. This may restore vendor utilities and drivers, but it can also add trial software. A standard Windows reset without this option is not necessarily the same as restoring the laptop’s original recovery image.

What happens during the reset

Windows may show a black screen for a prolonged period, occasionally for more than 15 minutes, and the laptop may restart several times. This does not automatically mean that the reset has failed.

Do not hold the power button, close the lid, or manually restart the laptop while the reset is working. Interrupting it can leave Windows unable to boot and turn a routine reset into a recovery or installation-media repair.

When the process finishes, Windows displays its initial setup screens. You will choose settings, connect to a network, sign in, install updates, reinstall applications, and restore your backed-up files.

Reset Windows 11 when the laptop will not boot

If Windows cannot reach the desktop, use the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).

From the sign-in screen or desktop

  1. Hold Shift.
  2. While holding it, select Power > Restart.
  3. Release Shift when the recovery menu appears.
  4. Select Troubleshoot, then select Reset this PC.
  5. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything, then follow the prompts.

If you can still use Windows, another route is Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. After the restart, choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.

Force Automatic Repair when Windows will not start

Use this only when normal startup and the sign-in-screen method are unavailable:

  1. Turn on the laptop.
  2. When the Windows or manufacturer logo appears, hold the power button until the laptop shuts down.
  3. Repeat the interruption once more.
  4. Turn the laptop on a third time. Windows should enter Automatic Repair.
  5. Select Advanced options.
  6. Select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.

Do not select System Restore if your goal is a factory reset. System Restore and Reset this PC are separate recovery tools. System Restore rolls system files and settings back to an earlier restore point; it does not perform the normal Windows reset described here.

Use Windows installation media

If the recovery environment is unavailable or damaged, create Windows 11 installation media on another working PC using a USB drive. Boot the affected laptop from that USB drive, choose the language and other preferences, select Next, and then select Repair my PC. This opens WinRE, where you can select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.

If built-in tools such as Startup Repair and System Restore do not resolve the problem, Microsoft recommends reinstalling Windows with installation media. This is more thorough than a normal reset and generally removes files and applications, so verify your backup first.

Reset versus “Reinstall now” in Windows Update

Windows 11 includes another recovery option at Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now.

Rank #2
Feature Reset this PC Reinstall now
Purpose Reset or refresh the installation. Repair the current Windows installation.
Installed apps Removed. Preserved.
Personal files Kept or removed, depending on your selection. Preserved.
Settings Reset. Preserved.

Use Reinstall now for Windows component or system-file problems when you want to keep applications and settings. It is not a factory reset. The option may be unavailable on work- or school-managed PCs and on some older Windows 11 releases.

Common problems during a Windows 11 reset

The reset asks for a BitLocker recovery key

This is expected on some encrypted systems, particularly when recovery tools are started outside the normal Windows session. Enter the 48-digit BitLocker recovery key. If you cannot find it, check the Microsoft account associated with the laptop or contact the organization that manages it. Without the key, access to encrypted data may not be possible.

The screen has been black for a long time

Wait. Microsoft notes that a black screen can occasionally last longer than 15 minutes, and the computer may restart by itself. Do not interrupt the process simply because the display is blank.

Reset failed or Windows will not start afterward

Enter WinRE again and retry using Cloud download if local installation files may be damaged. If the reset still fails, create installation media on another PC and perform a Windows reinstall. If the laptop has a storage failure, installation may continue to fail until the drive is repaired or replaced.

The laptop does not look like it did when new

Reset this PC reinstalls Windows, but the result depends on options such as Restore preinstalled apps. Manufacturer-specific recovery media may be required to restore the original drivers, utilities, partition layout, and bundled software. Also note that a reset does not restore your old personal files or programs unless you back them up and reinstall them yourself.

  • Save license keys and account recovery information.
  • Locate the BitLocker recovery key.
  • Connect the charger and use a stable internet connection for Cloud download.
  • Choose Keep my files only if you understand that applications and settings will still be removed.
  • Choose Remove everything for a handover, and enable Clean data when appropriate.
  • Do not interrupt the reset if the screen stays black or the laptop restarts.
  • Afterward, run Windows Update, install missing manufacturer drivers, reinstall applications, and restore your files.

FAQ

Does resetting Windows 11 delete everything?

It depends on the choice. Keep my files preserves personal files but removes installed apps and resets settings. Remove everything deletes personal files, apps, and settings.

Does Keep my files keep installed programs?

No. Installed applications are removed. You must reinstall programs after Windows finishes resetting.

How long does a Windows 11 factory reset take?

Microsoft gives a typical recovery duration of 30 minutes to 2 hours. Cloud download speed, storage performance, and the selected reset options affect the time.

Should I choose Cloud download or Local reinstall?

Choose Cloud download when local Windows files may be corrupted and you have reliable internet. Choose Local reinstall when internet access is slow or limited; it uses files already on the laptop and may not include the latest updates.

Will a reset restore my laptop exactly to its factory condition?

Not necessarily. Reset this PC reinstalls Windows. Manufacturer applications and customizations depend on the Restore preinstalled apps option. The laptop maker’s recovery image may be needed for an exact original setup.

Can I reset Windows 11 without Command Prompt?

Yes. The normal procedure uses Settings and the on-screen reset wizard. If Windows will not boot, use Reset this PC in Windows Recovery Environment; Command Prompt is not required for the official reset procedure.

What should I do if Windows 11 will not boot?

Enter Windows Recovery Environment with Shift+Restart, Advanced startup in Settings, or Automatic Repair after interrupting startup twice. Then select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. If recovery tools fail, use Windows installation media.

Is Reset this PC the same as Reinstall now?

No. Reinstall now, found under Fix problems using Windows Update, repairs the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Reset this PC removes apps and can remove personal files.

The Bottom Line

For a normal Windows 11 reset, use Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. Select Keep my files for a repair that preserves personal data, or Remove everything before handing the laptop to someone else. Back up first, locate the BitLocker key, and do not interrupt the laptop while the reset is running.
