The important requirement is that you start the reset on a device where Messenger’s secure storage is already turned on.
Do not choose Delete and turn off secure storage unless you accept permanent loss of the encrypted chat history stored in that backup. That is a destructive reset, not the normal forgotten-PIN procedure.
Reset a forgotten Messenger encrypted-chats PIN on a phone or tablet
Use a phone, tablet, or other device that can already access Messenger secure storage. A newly installed Messenger app or a new device that cannot restore your encrypted history does not satisfy this requirement. Meta’s PIN reset instructions specify that secure storage must already be turned on.
- Open Messenger.
- Tap your profile photo.
- Tap Privacy and safety.
- Open End-to-end encrypted chats.
- Tap Secure storage.
- Tap Reset PIN.
- Follow the prompts to create and confirm a new PIN.
This reset path is separate from deleting secure storage. Meta documents that deleting secure storage, not the ordinary PIN reset, permanently deletes the encrypted chat history stored there. See Meta’s secure-storage deletion guidance.

Reset or manage the PIN from Messenger on a computer
If you still have access to Messenger on a computer, use the desktop security-management controls:
- Go to messenger.com and sign in.
- Click your profile picture.
- Select Privacy & safety.
- Open End-to-end encrypted chats.
- Choose Message storage.
- Click Manage security methods.
- Select PIN or 40-character code.
- Choose the available option to create or reset the PIN, then complete the prompts.
Facebook’s desktop site has a similar route:
- Open facebook.com.
- Click Messenger in the upper-right corner.
- Click Options.
- Select Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats.
- Open Message storage → Manage security settings.
- Choose PIN or 40-character code and follow the available reset instructions.
For both desktop routes, the available management flow includes creating or resetting a PIN. Meta’s desktop instructions cover the security-method controls.
Restore chats or use a one-time code on a new computer
If you are signing in on a new computer, try the PIN when Messenger prompts you. If no prompt appears, open Profile picture → Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats → Message storage, choose Turn on secure storage, and enter your PIN. Meta documents these restore steps.
If you forgot the PIN, Messenger may offer one-time-code recovery on a new device:

- Sign in at messenger.com.
- When Messenger asks for the PIN, select Use a one-time code instead.
- If Messenger first displays a 40-character-code prompt, click More options, then choose Use a one-time code instead.
- Check a mobile device that you recently used with Messenger. A computer cannot receive the code.
- On the mobile device, tap This was me.
- Enter the displayed code on the new computer.
Only approve the request if you actually started the recovery. If you receive an unexpected one-time-code notification, tap This wasn’t me. Meta’s one-time-code guidance describes this process.
Other ways to restore encrypted Messenger chats
Depending on your account, device, and Meta’s rollout of the feature, Messenger may offer several secure-storage recovery methods. Meta lists these recovery options.

Set up Google Account recovery on Android
On an Android device, Messenger can save a copy of the key used to access secure storage in your Google Drive account. The encrypted Messenger chat history itself is not stored in Google Drive. Meta explains Google Account recovery.
- Open Messenger.
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Go to Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats → Message storage.
- Turn on Save key in Google Drive.
- Tap Continue with Google.
- Select the device’s primary Google Account.
- Tap Continue.
On iOS, Messenger may offer an Apple account as the equivalent recovery method. These options are gradually introduced, so they may not appear on every account.

PIN versus 40-character code
A 40-character code is not the same as your Messenger PIN. It is a separate security method selected when secure storage is configured. If you already have access to a device with message storage enabled, you can generate a new code from:
- Messenger Menu → Settings.
- Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats.
- Message storage.
- Tap More options under How you restore your chat history.
- Choose Generate 40-character code.
Generating a new 40-character code does not restore existing encrypted chat history by itself. It is a security credential, not a backup-recovery shortcut. Meta explains the code and how to generate it.
Do not delete secure storage unless you accept data loss
If you can no longer restore encrypted chats using any available secure-storage method, Messenger provides a full reset:
- Go to messenger.com.
- Click your profile picture.
- Open Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats.
- Select Secure storage.
- Choose Delete and turn off secure storage.
- Afterward, choose Turn on secure storage and select a new security method.
Warning: Deleting secure storage permanently deletes the encrypted chat history stored there. Messenger says it cannot reset that security method or restore the deleted backup. Meta’s instructions explain the consequence.

Deleting a PIN is different from resetting it
On desktop, Manage security methods lets you select PIN or 40-character code and delete that security method. Deletion prevents that PIN or code from being reused to access the encrypted chats. It is not the same operation as creating a replacement PIN.
Meta currently documents this deletion control as desktop-only. If an Android or iPhone guide tells you that the same delete option must appear in the mobile app, its instructions may be out of date. See Meta’s desktop security-method guidance.
Why a menu option may be missing
- You are on a new device: The ordinary forgotten-PIN reset requires a device where secure storage is already turned on.
- The account has not received a feature: Meta is gradually introducing recovery options, so menus vary by account, platform, and rollout. Meta notes the gradual introduction of options.
- You are looking for the wrong setting: PIN reset is under Secure storage on the mobile path, while desktop management uses Message storage → Manage security methods.
- You are confusing the PIN with the 40-character code: Each is a separate security method.
- You are using a computer for Google recovery: Google Account restoration works on Android mobile devices, not computers.
No command-line command is involved. Messenger PIN and encrypted-chat recovery are handled entirely through the mobile app or web interface.

Will resetting my Messenger encrypted-chats PIN delete my chats?
No. The documented Reset PIN procedure is separate from Delete and turn off secure storage. The ordinary PIN-reset path is intended to replace the forgotten PIN without deleting the encrypted chat history.

Can I reset the PIN on a new phone that cannot restore my Messenger history?
Not through the normal forgotten-PIN path. Messenger requires the reset to be started from a device where secure storage is already turned on. On a new device, try the PIN, Apple account, Google Account, 40-character code, or one-time-code recovery options that Messenger offers.
What happens if I delete secure storage?
The encrypted chat history stored in that secure-storage backup is permanently deleted. Messenger says the backup cannot be restored afterward.
Can Messenger support recover my deleted encrypted backup?
No. Meta states that Messenger cannot restore the backup after secure storage and its security method have been deleted.
Can I use a Google Account to recover Messenger chats on a computer?
No. Google Account restoration is documented for Android mobile devices. On a computer, use the recovery method Messenger displays, such as a PIN or one-time code.
Is the 40-character code the same as the Messenger PIN?
No. The 40-character code is a separate secure-storage security method. Generating a new code does not by itself restore existing encrypted chat history.
The Bottom Line
To reset a forgotten Messenger encrypted-chats PIN without deleting your history, use a device where secure storage is already enabled: Messenger → profile photo → Privacy and safety → End-to-end encrypted chats → Secure storage → Reset PIN. On a new computer, first try restoring with your PIN; if you forgot it, use the one-time-code option if available. Avoid Delete and turn off secure storage unless permanent deletion of the encrypted backup is acceptable.
