To get Bluetooth headphones working again, first check their charge and connection settings, then forget the old entry on your phone or computer if needed. Put the headphones into pairing mode using the instructions for their exact model and select them in Bluetooth settings. Use a factory reset only when ordinary re-pairing fails: reset buttons and effects vary by model, and some resets erase saved pairings.
Before you reset, identify the headphones and the kind of reset you need
Find the model name on the headband, earcup, charging case, manual, or the headphones’ entry in your device’s Bluetooth settings. Use that model to locate the manufacturer’s support page or manual before holding buttons. There is no single reset combination that applies to all Bluetooth headphones.
Three actions are often confused:
- Forget or remove: Deletes the headphones’ saved connection from your phone or computer. It does not reset the headphones.
- Enter pairing mode: Makes the headphones available for a new Bluetooth connection. It is not necessarily a factory reset.
- Factory reset or initialize: Restores some or all headphone settings. Depending on the model, it may also delete stored pairing information.
Start with forgetting and pairing again if the connection seems stale. Save factory reset for when those steps do not solve the problem, or the manufacturer specifically recommends it.
Check power, distance, Bluetooth, and audio output
- Charge and turn on the headphones. Confirm the playback device is also powered. Apple’s Beats troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that both devices are charged and on.
- Bring the devices closer. Sony recommends keeping the headphones and playback device within 1 meter (3 feet) for the pairing procedure covered by its support article. Apple’s Beats guidance recommends staying within 30 feet and moving away from other Bluetooth devices, microwaves, wireless routers, and other electronics. Follow your model’s guidance where it differs.
- Check Bluetooth and sound output. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone or computer, and check that audio is routed to the headphones rather than another speaker or output device.
Forget the old connection and pair the headphones again
If the headphones appear in Bluetooth settings but will not reconnect, remove their saved entry and start a fresh pairing. Apple’s Beats troubleshooting recommends forgetting the product on the source device before pairing again.

- Remove the saved headphones from the playback device. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button next to the headphones, then tap Forget This Device. On Mac, open System Settings > Bluetooth and remove the product. Labels can vary by operating-system version; on other phones and computers, use the Bluetooth device list’s remove, forget, or unpair control.
- Put the headphones into pairing mode. Follow the exact model’s manual or support page. Sony says to hold the POWER or Multi-function button for about 7 seconds to enter pairing mode on applicable products; its article warns that instructions apply only to specific models. Do not use that timing for other headphones unless their instructions say to.
- Select the headphones in Bluetooth settings. Choose their name from the playback device’s available devices list and follow any on-screen prompt. If they do not appear, confirm that pairing mode is active and try again according to the model’s instructions.
Factory-reset only with the model’s instructions
If a fresh pairing does not help, consult the manufacturer’s reset instructions for the exact model. Reset controls and consequences differ, even among products from the same brand.
- Beats: Apple’s reset guide lists different button sequences and hold times for different products, including 15-second sequences for several listed earbud models. Use the guide’s entry for your specific product rather than applying one sequence to another model.
- Sony ULT WEAR: Sony’s model-specific guide says to hold the power and NC/AMB buttons together for about 10 seconds to initialize the headphones. Sony says this restores factory settings and deletes pairing information. Afterward, remove the old headphone entry from the connected device and pair again. This sequence is only for ULT WEAR.
- Bose QuietComfort Headphones: The owner’s guide says, “Restoring to factory settings is only recommended if you are having issues with the headphones, or you have been instructed to do so by Bose customer service.” Check the guide for the specific procedure before proceeding.
Do not assume every factory reset deletes pairings: Sony has also documented an older headset for which a factory reset does not remove pairing information. The model’s own guide determines what to expect.

If the headphones still will not connect
- Restart the headphones and playback device, then check Bluetooth and audio-output settings again. Bose’s general troubleshooting guidance also includes power-cycling the headphones and toggling Bluetooth.
- Repeat the model-specific pairing procedure after initialization, removing the old saved entry first if the manufacturer instructs you to.
- If the procedure still fails, consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting page or support service. For example, Sony’s WF-1000XM5 troubleshooting guidance says that persistent failure after initialization may indicate a malfunction and require repair; that advice applies to that model, not necessarily to other headphones.
