To reset a Samsung Galaxy tablet, use Settings > General management > Reset if you can unlock it. Choose Factory data reset only when you intend to erase personal data and downloaded apps; for a narrower fix, use a settings, network, or accessibility reset instead. Back up what you need and make sure you know the accounts linked to the tablet before wiping it.

Choose the right kind of reset

A factory data reset erases personal information, downloaded apps, and other data on the tablet, returning it to the initial setup screen. Samsung warns that personal information may not be recoverable, so treat the reset as a destructive step—not simply a restart. Samsung’s factory-reset guidance describes the process and notes that screens can vary by model, software, and carrier.

Option What it is for Data impact
Reset all settings Undo changed system settings without wiping the tablet Does not erase apps, accounts, personal data, or downloaded-app settings in the same way as a factory reset
Reset mobile network settings Address a mobile-network configuration problem Narrower reset; does not factory-erase personal content
Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings Address a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth configuration problem Narrower reset; does not factory-erase personal content
Reset accessibility settings Restore accessibility configuration Narrower reset; does not factory-erase personal content
Factory data reset Erase the tablet before transfer, or as a last-resort troubleshooting step Removes personal information and downloaded apps

Exact reset choices and labels depend on the device and software. Samsung explains the distinctions in its reset guidance. If the problem is limited to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, try the corresponding network reset before considering a factory wipe.

Prepare before a factory reset

Back up what you want to keep

Use Samsung Smart Switch to transfer or back up eligible content. Samsung documents wireless transfer, a USB cable, microSD card, and USB OTG flash drive as possible routes. Some content is synced through an external account or service and must be synced again after signing in; not every data type transfers through Smart Switch. A backup should not be assumed to be a complete image of the tablet. See Samsung’s tablet setup and transfer guidance.

If using a microSD card for backup, Samsung’s tablet setup instructions say: “You will need to insert the microSD card or flash drive into your old device to create a backup of your data before transferring it.” An external drive is optional, not required to reset. Check the tablet’s port and external-storage support, and the drive’s connector, before choosing one.

Know the account credentials

The Settings reset may ask for the screen-lock credential or Samsung account password. A reset through Recovery may also trigger Google Factory Reset Protection, which can require the Google account previously associated with the tablet. A factory reset does not bypass account verification. If you bought the tablet secondhand and cannot access the prior account, use official account recovery or contact Samsung support with proof of ownership; do not expect another wipe to remove the verification requirement. Samsung describes the button-reset path and account protection in its UK reset guidance.

Decrypt an encrypted microSD card

If the tablet uses an encrypted microSD card, decrypt it before resetting. Samsung warns that otherwise the tablet may be unable to read the card afterward. Follow the instructions for your model before starting the reset.

Reset a tablet you can unlock

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Reset, then Factory data reset.
  4. Review the accounts and data listed on the confirmation screen.
  5. Tap Reset, then Delete all when prompted. Enter any requested screen-lock or Samsung account credentials.
  6. Let the tablet restart, then follow the on-screen initial setup.

Samsung notes that its documented flow requires a network connection to log out of a Samsung account. If a label is different or an option is missing, search within Settings or consult the manual for the exact model. Samsung’s instructions may differ from the tablet’s screens because of model, software-version, or carrier variation.

Reset from Recovery when Settings is unavailable

Use Recovery only if you cannot reach Settings and understand that the procedure erases the tablet. Samsung’s published tablet instructions describe these button combinations, but explicitly caution that they vary by device; check the exact model’s documentation rather than assuming one combination will work.

  1. Power off the tablet.
  2. If it has a physical Home button, hold Volume Up + Power + Home. If it has no physical Home button, hold Volume Up + Power.
  3. In the Recovery menu, use the volume buttons to highlight Wipe data/factory reset, then press Power to select it.
  4. Confirm the wipe when prompted, then choose the reboot option.
  5. Complete setup after restart. Be ready to verify the Google account previously associated with the tablet.

These are Samsung UK’s published directions for supported tablet configurations, not a universal button recipe. Refer to Samsung’s Recovery instructions and the model-specific manual if the tablet does not enter Recovery as expected.

Troubleshoot before wiping a tablet that will not start

A boot loop or failure to start does not automatically mean a factory reset is the right first move. Samsung recommends trying troubleshooting steps such as restarting and checking for software updates; physical damage or other causes may need service inspection. Its boot-loop guidance treats factory reset as a last resort because it removes data.
