To reset a router to factory settings, use the reset button or the reset option in its web interface or app, following the instructions for your exact model. A factory reset erases custom settings, so save a configuration backup and gather any ISP connection details you may need before proceeding. After the router restarts, set it up again.
What a factory reset changes
A factory reset returns the router to its original default settings and removes custom configuration. Depending on the router, that can include the Wi-Fi network name and password, internet connection settings, port forwarding, and parental controls. TP-Link describes this effect in its factory reset guide; ASUS also lists internet settings and Wi-Fi credentials in its router reset instructions.
This is not the same as restarting or power-cycling the router: a restart does not intentionally erase its configuration. Also distinguish the router’s admin password, used to sign in to its settings, from the Wi-Fi password used to connect devices. If you only forgot the Wi-Fi password, a factory reset may be unnecessary.
Before you reset the router
- Check that a reset fits the problem. It can restore access when you have lost the admin login or help after persistent troubleshooting, but it does not guarantee that an internet connection problem will be fixed.
- Save the current configuration if you can sign in. Use the router’s backup or export option, if available, and keep the backup somewhere accessible after the reset.
- Gather ISP and special connection details. Your provider may require an account name, password, connection type, or other settings. ASUS advises saving these details or asking the ISP before resetting.
- Identify the exact router model. Button locations, hold times, LED signals, app support, and menu names vary. Follow the manufacturer’s official instructions for that model and software version.
Choose a reset method
Use the web interface or app if you can still sign in and want to save a backup first. Use the physical button when admin access is unavailable or the model’s instructions call for it. Either method performs a factory reset and can erase custom settings.

| Method | When it is useful | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Reset button | You cannot access the admin interface, or the model’s instructions specify the button. | Whether the control is recessed or combined with WPS, and the model-specific hold time and LED cue. |
| Web interface or app | You can sign in and want to use the router’s on-screen reset option. | The exact menu path for your model and firmware; make a backup first if available. |
Reset with the physical button
- Look up the reset instructions for your exact router model. Locate the Reset control; it may be a button, a combined WPS/Reset button, or a recessed pinhole. If the reset is recessed, use a suitable small pin only as directed by the manual.
- Keep the router powered on unless the manufacturer’s instructions specify otherwise.
- Press and hold the control for the model-specific duration, watching for the specified indicator-light cue. Do not assume one timing or LED pattern applies to every router.
- Release the button as instructed and leave the router connected to power while it resets and reboots.
The required timing differs even among major manufacturers. TP-Link’s guide, last updated April 17, 2026, describes holding Reset or WPS/Reset for more than 10 seconds and releasing when the SYS LED changes. ASUS’s guide, last updated February 23, 2026, describes a 5–10-second hold until the power LED starts flashing for its procedure. These are examples for the instructions described by those manufacturers, not universal settings.
Reset through the web interface or app
If you can sign in, first save a backup if the router provides one. Then find the factory-reset option in the settings or manufacturer app and follow its confirmation prompts. Menu labels vary by device and software version. For example, TP-Link’s guide uses Advanced > System/System Tools > Backup and Restore > Factory Default Restore. ASUS describes a system reset in its app and a web-interface path through Administration > Restore/Save/Upload Setting. Check the instructions for your own model rather than relying on these example paths.

Set up the router after it restarts
- Reconnect using the default network and access details provided for your specific model. Check its label or official setup instructions; there is no single default address, network name, or password that applies to every router.
- Complete the initial setup, including the ISP connection type, account credentials, or other special settings if your provider requires them.
- Choose your Wi-Fi name and password and reapply other custom settings you need.
- Restore a saved configuration only if it is appropriate for the router and compatible with its firmware. If internet service is still unavailable, check the ISP connection and router setup rather than assuming the reset did not work.
If you are still having trouble
- If you cannot sign in, confirm that you are using the admin credentials rather than the Wi-Fi password. If the admin password is lost, consult the exact model’s official reset instructions.
- If the router resets but cannot connect to the internet, verify the ISP connection type and any required account details with your provider.
- If the button or interface option does not behave as expected, recheck the official instructions for the model and firmware. Do not substitute another router’s hold time, LED pattern, default address, or password.
