This password is separate from the lock-screen PIN. Before resetting, make sure you are not dealing with a child-profile setting or an Amazon Kids+ Parent Dashboard PIN, which have different contexts and recovery steps.
First, identify which password or PIN you forgot
Fire tablets can use several credentials that sound similar but do not control the same thing. Amazon’s Parental Controls setup guidance says the adult-profile Parental Controls password differs from the lock-screen password.

Reset a forgotten adult-profile Parental Controls password
Amazon’s instruction is to restore full access by resetting the Fire tablet to factory defaults. Use Amazon’s current Factory Reset Your Fire Tablet instructions and select directions for your particular model or generation.
The reset sequence can differ by device, so do not rely on an unverified button combination or menu path. Amazon’s support text confirms the factory-reset requirement but does not specify a single sequence for every Fire tablet. Follow the current model-specific directions on Amazon’s page before proceeding.

A factory reset is not the same as restarting the tablet or changing its screen-unlock PIN. Amazon identifies the factory reset—not either of those actions—as the way to restore full access when the adult-profile Parental Controls password is forgotten.
If the forgotten credential is a Kids+ Parent Dashboard PIN
If you mean a PIN used in the Amazon Kids+ Parent Dashboard rather than the password protecting an adult profile, follow the separate recovery route in Amazon’s FAQ: deregister the device and then reregister it through Manage Your Content and Devices. Confirm that this is the credential you forgot before taking that action; it is not the recovery route Amazon gives for adult-profile Parental Controls.

How adult-profile Parental Controls are set up
Amazon’s setup instructions describe this feature as applying to an adult profile and recommend recording the password when it is created. On the tablet, the documented path is to swipe down twice to open Quick Settings, choose Settings, then Profile and Parental Controls. Turn on Restrict access to current profile, set and confirm a password, and select Finish.
These controls can restrict web browsing; Email, Contacts, and Calendar; Amazon Store or Amazon Shop purchases; Prime Video titles; selected content types; wireless connectivity; the camera; and location-based services. Amazon also cautions that enabling Parental Controls does not remove all mature or adult-rated material from apps, books, music, or store search results.

For children under 13, check the child profile instead
Amazon directs caregivers to Child Profile settings for children under 13. Those settings include a child lock-screen password configured under the child profile’s Other Settings and Lock Screen options. That child lock-screen password is not the adult-profile Parental Controls password discussed above. See Amazon’s Child Profile settings guide for the relevant profile controls.
