Request a refund from the store or retailer that charged you—not automatically from the game’s publisher. Explain what the game or edition promised, what was canceled or changed, when it happened, and why that matters to your purchase. A refund is not automatic: storefront rules vary by country and purchase type, and local consumer rights may apply separately.

What to include in a refund request

Use the seller’s official refund or support channel. Keep the request factual and specific: identify the purchased game or edition, the promised feature or content, and the change that affected it. Ask for the remedy you want, such as a refund.

Gather records that help explain the timeline and what you bought. These are useful supporting evidence, not a universal checklist required by every store.

  • Receipt, transaction ID, and purchase date.
  • Original product page or edition description, if available.
  • The publisher’s dated announcement of the cancellation or change.
  • When the change took effect and which promised feature, mode, access, or content it affected.
  • Any relevant support correspondence.

A preference change is not necessarily a defect. Describe the facts without exaggerating or asserting a legal entitlement you have not confirmed.

  • Over 6,100 stores located throughout the United States.
  • GameStop. Power to the Players.
  • Redemption: Instore and Online
  • No returns and no refunds on gift cards.

How to request the refund

  1. Identify who took payment. Check your receipt and transaction history. Start with the storefront or retailer that charged you; it may not be the publisher.
  2. Check the policy for your account’s country and purchase type. Rules can differ for a full game, preorder, add-on, subscription, or physical copy, and can depend on whether content was downloaded, played, streamed, or consumed.
  3. Submit the request through the seller’s official workflow. Include the purchase date, what was originally represented, what changed and when, why the change matters, and the remedy you are requesting.
  4. Keep the case record. Save the case number, the seller’s response, and any stated reason for denial.
  5. If denied, respond once to the stated reason. Provide any missing evidence and ask the seller to consider any local statutory consumer rights that may apply.

Store refund rules are not interchangeable

The following policies illustrate why you should check the page for your market. A store’s voluntary refund offer is different from a remedy that might be available under local law.

Store and region What the cited policy says What to do
Steam Valve’s ordinary game refund offer is for requests within 14 days of purchase and under two hours of play. Valve says it will review requests outside those conditions, but approval is not guaranteed. It says approved refunds are issued within a week. [Steam Refunds] Use Steam Support’s Purchases workflow. See How To Request A Refund. If your request is outside the ordinary conditions, submit it for review rather than assuming it will be accepted.
PlayStation Store, UK The UK cancellation policy says digital customers consent to immediate delivery and explains that this affects cancellation rights. This is a UK policy, not a global PlayStation rule. [UK cancellation policy] Read the policy for the country associated with your account before relying on a cancellation rule.
PlayStation Store, Canada The Canadian policy says local law may provide additional rights. It also says a delivered in-game consumable is not refundable unless faulty. [Canada cancellation policy] Check the Canadian terms and the details for the particular content purchased.
Nintendo eShop, US Nintendo’s US digital-product policy says payments, including pre-purchases and subscriptions, are final and non-refundable except when Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one. This describes the US policy page, not a worldwide rule. [US digital-product policy] Contact Nintendo Support about a permitted exception and check the rules for your location.
Xbox The cited Xbox refunds support page is available, but its precise current eligibility terms are not established here. [Xbox refunds support] Open the refund support page for your market and follow the current terms shown there; do not assume a universal deadline or eligibility rule.

Store policy versus consumer rights

Meeting a store’s voluntary refund conditions and having a potential statutory remedy are separate questions. Steam’s EU/UK information explicitly distinguishes its voluntary refund offer from the statutory right of withdrawal. The applicable rights depend on the buyer’s location and transaction facts; the store policy alone does not settle them. [Steam EU/UK withdrawal and refunds]

If the seller refuses, consult the consumer-advice or dispute-resolution route for your jurisdiction, especially if a meaningful amount is involved. A chargeback is a payment dispute, not a routine first refund step; it can have account or payment consequences, and whether it is appropriate depends on the circumstances.
