To turn your own long YouTube video into a Short, open its watch page in the YouTube mobile app and choose Remix → Edit into a Short. That built-in route selects up to 60 seconds and links the resulting Short back to the source video. For more control—or a clip longer than 60 seconds—prepare a square or vertical edit separately and upload it through YouTube Studio, subject to YouTube’s current Shorts and copyright rules.

Use the native route when you want a quick excerpt from your own eligible upload and the 60-second selection limit works. Choose an external edit when you need a longer clip or more precise reframing and editing control.
Make a Short from your own uploaded video
- Open the watch page for your public long-form video in the YouTube mobile app.
- Tap Remix → Edit into a Short.
- Select up to 60 seconds of footage.
- Add any useful creative touches, such as text or filters, then review and upload the Short.
YouTube Help says, “Shorts that you create from your videos are linked back to your original video, giving new viewers a chance to discover your content.” That connection is a documented feature, not a guarantee of additional views.
If “Edit into a Short” is missing
YouTube documents this feature for a creator’s own public long-form video. Private and unlisted videos, and videos with third-party copyright claims, are not eligible for this route. YouTube also advises checking whether Shorts sampling is allowed in the video’s Studio settings. Consult YouTube’s instructions for creating Shorts from your videos if the app’s menus or eligibility details differ.

When to edit outside YouTube
An external edit is useful if you need more than the native flow’s 60-second selection, want detailed control of the crop, or need to shape the clip around captions and on-screen details. YouTube Studio’s upload guidance allows square or vertical Shorts up to three minutes. Prepare the clip in an editor of your choice, export it in one of those shapes, then upload it through Studio using the current YouTube Shorts upload guidance.
The three-minute maximum is not the same as a promise that every upload will be classified identically in every case. YouTube’s current guidance says that, for standard channels, videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024, that meet the stated square-or-vertical dimensions and length are categorized as Shorts. It gives a separate threshold of December 8, 2025, for Official Artist Channels. These are upload-date classification rules; check YouTube’s current guidance if your channel type or upload history makes classification important.

Shape the clip so it works on its own
YouTube documents the available product steps, not a universal formula for a compelling edit. These are practical editing choices, not platform rules or guarantees about reach:
- Choose one complete idea. Look for a self-contained answer, demonstration, point, or payoff rather than a fragment that depends on a long setup.
- Start near the moment of interest. Remove background and setup that a viewer needs only if they have watched the full video. Preserve enough context to understand the clip.
- Reframe for the screen. In a vertical or square crop, keep the speaker, object, or important on-screen detail visible. Check that a crop does not cut off key text or action.
- Add context where it helps. Captions or concise on-screen text can make a clip easier to follow when audio is off or unclear. Keep text readable at phone size.
- Give the ending a purpose. End cleanly at the point’s payoff. A natural loop or a brief invitation to watch the source can fit the clip, but neither guarantees better performance.
- Review the export on a phone-sized screen. Check the crop, text, sound, and transitions before publishing.
Check rights before you publish
Using YouTube’s in-product remix tools is different from downloading someone else’s video and editing it yourself. YouTube says remix options can be unavailable because of privacy settings, third-party claims, creator opt-outs, or music licenses; creators can limit remixing, and removing a source video can affect remixes. For a Short edited elsewhere, YouTube says copyright-protected material must be approved for use. Material may receive a Content ID claim or be removed after a valid and complete takedown notice, which can result in a copyright strike. Credit, a short excerpt, commentary, or a crop does not by itself establish permission. Rights questions depend on the material, permissions, and jurisdiction; YouTube’s help pages do not resolve every legal question.
- Use footage and audio you own or have permission to use.
- Use YouTube’s licensed in-product audio where appropriate, and check the applicable music and footage permissions for your intended use.
- Review upload notifications and respond to any claim through YouTube’s documented process.
Know the longer-Short claim caveat
YouTube’s current Shorts guidance states that a Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim is globally blocked under the policy text on that page. Rights-holder guidance has also shown a later-dated change notice, so do not treat that wording as an assurance that claim handling will never change. Check the current Shorts policy and eligibility guidance and your upload notifications before publishing a longer Short with claimed material.
