To replace a missing board-game piece, first identify the exact game edition and check its component list. If the piece was missing from a new purchase, contact the retailer or follow the publisher’s customer-service policy. If it was lost later, check the publisher’s parts store, then look for a matching piece from a used copy or marketplace. A generic token can work when its size and function fit, but it may not replace a unique printed or shaped component.
Identify the exact game and piece
Do not order based on the game title alone. Different editions or printings may use pieces with different dimensions, colors, artwork, or shapes. Check the rulebook’s contents list or the publisher’s component inventory, then record:
- The full game title and publisher
- Edition, printing, language, and approximate publication era, if known
- The missing component’s name, quantity, color, and any identifying details
This information helps a retailer, publisher, or seller distinguish a genuine match from a similar-looking part.

CATAN: retailer-first guidance varies by country
CATAN Studio directs eligible customers in the United States and Canada to contact the retailer first for a new game with missing pieces, with customer-service or distributor routes if an exchange is unavailable. Its guidance gives different instructions for the UK and other countries. Check the current CATAN customer-service page for the route that applies to your location.
Asmodee USA: retail and direct purchases
Asmodee USA’s Parts Replacement FAQ says many retail purchases should be handled through the retailer. For direct purchases, it describes a request process with a six-month limit from shipment or purchase, requiring images and a clear description. The FAQ says its policy applies in the United States; it also says second-hand purchases are not covered by its replacement service. Confirm the current terms before submitting a request.

Was the piece lost after purchase?
For a part lost through use, check the game publisher’s official replacement-parts store or contact its support team to ask whether that specific piece is sold. Availability, stock, shipping, and whether parts are sold individually or in sets vary by game and location.
For example, CATAN’s official service page says, “CatanShop.com sells replacement parts, such as sets of wooden playing pieces and decks of cards.” See CATAN service information for its suggested routes. This is a CATAN-specific option, not a general store for other publishers’ games.

BoardGameGeek’s accessories catalog includes generic components such as wooden meeples, cubes, gems, and discs. Catalog listings show examples of available component types, not compatibility with every game or guaranteed stock.
When a generic substitute will work
A generic token can be a practical fallback if players can use it unambiguously and it behaves like the original piece. Before buying one, compare:

- Dimensions and shape: Does it fit on the board, in a slot, or in a stack the same way?
- Visibility: Can players distinguish its color and shape from other pieces during play?
- Quantity and function: Does the game need a particular number of pieces, and does each piece represent a specific action or resource?
- Information: Does the missing part carry printed text, symbols, or artwork that players need to make decisions?
Common cubes, discs, meeples, dice, gems, or tokens may be replaceable with generic equivalents if those checks pass. A unique card, board section, or distinctive piece may contain information or fit in a way a generic token cannot reproduce. For those components, ask the publisher or seek a donor copy before improvising.

When more than one route is possible, compare the exact edition match, functional fit, stock and geographic availability, total cost including shipping, component condition, seller reliability, and whether the piece is essential to play or mainly restores the original appearance. A publisher route may suit a newly defective copy; a second-hand source or generic part may be more practical for a piece lost from an older game. The best choice depends on the title and circumstances.
