Usually, you do not need to replace grep: its basic interface is specified by POSIX. To keep a shell script portable, use standard options and regular-expression syntax, and switch to awk, sed, or shell case only when that tool better fits the job.
First decide whether grep needs replacing
grep selects input lines that match one or more patterns. The POSIX.1-2017 specification describes that core purpose, and defines matching modes and exit statuses. A script is more likely to break across systems because it relies on a GNU extension or a nonstandard pattern feature than because it calls grep at all.
For a script targeting POSIX-style environments, prefer the standard interface and avoid GNU-only long options or matching options. GNU grep documents extensions beyond POSIX; do not assume those extensions exist on another system. POSIX conformance provides a baseline, not a guarantee that every reduced or non-GNU userland behaves identically in areas outside the standard.
Choose the tool by the job

Keep grep for line matching, but make intent explicit
Choose the mode that matches the meaning of the pattern: -F for literal text, -E for POSIX extended regular expressions, or the default basic regular expression mode when BRE syntax is intended. These grammars differ. A pattern translated mechanically between BRE, ERE, awk regular expressions, sed addresses, and shell patterns may no longer mean the same thing.

Quote pattern arguments to prevent the shell from expanding or splitting them. Quoting does not change the regular-expression dialect understood by grep; it only controls how the shell passes the argument. If the pattern might begin with -, use -e to mark it as a pattern rather than letting it be interpreted as an option. Keep options within the POSIX set for the environments you support.
Use awk when the condition is about records or fields
Awk normally reads input as records, usually lines, tests each record against patterns, and runs associated actions. A matching rule without an explicit action prints the record; actions can instead inspect fields, combine conditions, or transform data. That makes awk a natural choice when the script has outgrown “select lines matching this pattern.”

For example, if a script needs to check a particular field and then produce a derived value, express that as an awk pattern-action program rather than chaining searches that obscure the record-level condition. Keep the awk program quoted so the shell does not interpret its characters, and use the POSIX awk feature set when portability across implementations matters. Do not replace a simple line search with dense awk code solely to avoid the name grep.
Use sed when you need to edit or explicitly print stream content
sed is suited to substitutions and other stream edits. It can also select lines: with -n, automatic printing is suppressed and explicit print commands determine what is emitted. Use it when editing or selection belongs naturally in a stream-editing operation, and stick to portable commands and BRE syntax where required by your targets.

If the script needs only a yes-or-no answer, sed can make output suppression and status handling more complicated than a direct grep test. Pick it for editing or stream processing, not as a nominal replacement for every search.
Use shell case patterns for simple shell values
A POSIX shell case statement can test a variable against simple glob-like patterns without starting an external utility. This is useful for straightforward shell-value checks. Its pattern language is not grep’s BRE or ERE syntax, so use it only when shell pattern semantics are actually what you want; do not translate a regular expression into a shell pattern by appearance alone.

Preserve exit-status behavior when changing a pipeline
grep distinguishes three outcomes: status 0 means at least one line matched, 1 means no line matched, and a value greater than 1 indicates an error. A replacement can change what a pipeline prints and what status the script receives. Review both before swapping out a pipeline stage, especially if the script treats “no match” as a normal result but handles an execution or input error differently.
Check portability at the shell and locale boundaries
- Separate shell quoting from utility syntax. Quote arguments to prevent shell expansion, then ensure the utility’s pattern grammar is supported by the target standard.
- Do not assume GNU options are universal. GNU grep’s long options and GNU-specific matching options are not a portable interface.
- Account for locale where relevant. Locale can affect text and character interpretation; the POSIX grep specification also discusses locale handling for pathname processing. If inputs may contain unusual bytes or pathnames, test the behavior in the locales and environments you support.
- Test on the actual deployment targets. Check scripts on the systems and userlands they must support, particularly reduced or non-GNU environments. Standards conformance is the baseline, while implementation-specific behavior can still differ outside it.
The Open Group’s POSIX.1-2017 grep specification states: “The grep utility shall search the input files, selecting lines matching one or more patterns; the types of patterns are controlled by the options specified.”
