To let most Wi-Fi devices reconnect to a replacement TP-Link router automatically, set its Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password to exactly match the old router, including capitalization. This keeps your Wi-Fi network credentials the same; it does not transfer every setting from the old router. TP-Link says settings cannot be transferred directly between different router models, so you’ll need to re-enter any other custom settings you want to keep.

Before you disconnect the old router

Write down the exact Wi-Fi name and password. If you can still access the old router’s admin page, confirm them there rather than relying on memory. Note any other custom settings you know you need; they will not necessarily carry over to a different model.

Gather the replacement router and power adapter, your modem, a setup phone or computer, and an Ethernet cable. TP-Link says a cable is usually included. If your internet provider requires a login, have those credentials ready. Where practical, leave the old router powered on until the new one has internet access.

Set up the replacement router with the same Wi-Fi name and password

  1. Connect the hardware. Connect the modem to the new router’s WAN or Internet port with Ethernet. Turn on the modem first and let it finish starting, then power on the router.
  2. Open the router setup interface. Use TP-Link Tether if your model supports it, or open the web management page. TP-Link lists tplinkwifi.net as one way to reach the interface. Exact menus depend on the router model and firmware.
  3. Enter the old Wi-Fi credentials. Set the new router’s SSID and Wi-Fi password to match the old ones exactly. The password is case-sensitive. TP-Link’s Wi-Fi settings guidance says compatible routers can be configured in Tether or through the web interface; on many models the web path is Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings. Available options and labels can vary.
  4. Save and reconnect your setup device if needed. Saving Wi-Fi changes may disconnect a phone or computer that is administering the router over Wi-Fi. Rejoin the network using the same credentials.
  5. Finish basic security and connectivity checks. Set a new router administrator password; this is separate from the Wi-Fi password. Check for firmware updates, then confirm that a device can access the internet.
  6. Allow your other devices to reconnect. Most Wi-Fi devices should recognize the unchanged network name and password and reconnect. If a device stays offline, use its app to select the network and enter the password. Some cameras and locks may need to be put into pairing mode first.

TP-Link Editorial Group’s 2026 router replacement guide estimates basic setup usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. That is an estimate, not a guarantee; reconnecting devices that do not return automatically can add a few minutes per device.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

What carries over—and what does not

Using the exact same SSID and password is the broadly applicable way to preserve Wi-Fi access for devices that already know those credentials. It does not copy the old router’s full configuration. For a different model, TP-Link says you cannot transfer settings directly; manually re-enter the network name, password, and any other custom settings you want to retain.

Do not assume that schedules, parental controls, port forwards, guest-network settings, or the router administrator password will migrate. The settings interface and available controls also differ among TP-Link models and firmware versions. TP-Link recommends changing only the SSID and password unless you have a reason to alter other wireless settings.

When a configuration backup may apply

TP-Link documents backup and restore for ISP-customized devices, but this is not a general method for moving settings to a different router. Its instructions require the same model: log in to the device, open Advanced > System Tools > Backup & Restore, save the configuration file, then upload and restore it on the device. Restoring overwrites the target device’s current configuration and restarts the router. Check TP-Link’s instructions for your device before using this route.

Should you change the Wi-Fi name or password?

You can use new credentials, but devices will then need to join the changed network. Reusing both the old SSID and password avoids that extra step for most devices. If you intentionally change either one, reconnect devices through their network settings or companion apps; smart-home devices may require their setup or pairing process.

Do not factory-reset the old router to preserve settings

A factory reset is not part of replacing the router. TP-Link says a reset erases custom internet settings, Wi-Fi settings, and the administrator password. Keep the old router’s settings available until you have confirmed the replacement is online and have recorded anything else you need.
