One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou can replace a laptop hard drive if its storage is designed to be removable. First identify the exact laptop model and check its specifications and service manual: some laptops use a replaceable 2.5-inch SATA drive, some use an M.2 module, and others have soldered storage or model-specific service restrictions. Then match the replacement to the documented interface and dimensions, back up your files, and follow the manual’s battery and disassembly procedure.
1. Check whether your laptop’s drive can be replaced
Find the full model name or number on the laptop’s label, in its system information, or in the manufacturer’s support utility. Use that exact identifier to locate the manufacturer’s specifications and service manual before buying a drive or opening the case. Seagate says, “Most laptop computers are designed to give the owner the ability to replace the internal drive,” but the service documentation for your model determines whether that is true for your computer and how the work must be done. See Seagate’s laptop drive installation guidance and Dell’s guidance to use the specific model service manual.
Look for the storage type, replacement procedure, required bracket or cable, and any battery-disconnection instructions. If the storage is soldered or the manual does not describe a replacement procedure, do not assume that a standard drive upgrade is possible.
2. Choose a drive that matches the laptop
Match the physical form factor, interface and protocol, dimensions, mounting hardware, and supported capacity stated in the laptop’s documentation. A 2.5-inch SATA drive and an M.2 module are different kinds of hardware; they are not interchangeable just because both are internal storage. An M.2 slot alone does not establish that every M.2 drive will work.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- For a 2.5-inch bay: Confirm that the laptop supports a 2.5-inch SATA drive and check the permitted drive height. Seagate lists 2.5-inch drive heights of 7 mm, 9.5 mm, and 15 mm; the laptop’s bay and mounting arrangement determine what fits.
- For M.2 storage: Confirm the supported interface or protocol, keying, and module length. Seagate lists M.2 lengths 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110; the model manual must identify which size and type your laptop accepts.
A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is an option only if your laptop supports that bay and interface. MSI’s HDD upgrade instructions discuss a 2.5-inch SATA SSD upgrade in their applicable context; they do not establish compatibility for every laptop.
3. Decide how to preserve your data and system
Back up files you need before removing the old drive. If it is readable and you want to keep your current operating system, applications, and settings, cloning or imaging may migrate the installation to the replacement. Seagate describes cloning or imaging software as part of that migration process. A compatible 2.5-inch SATA enclosure or SATA-to-USB adapter can help connect a 2.5-inch SATA source drive during cloning; choose an accessory only after confirming the source drive’s interface and form factor.

If the old drive is unreadable, or you prefer a fresh setup, prepare the laptop’s recovery media or operating-system installation media before disassembly. For Windows, have any needed account or license information and encryption recovery material available. Microsoft recommends backing up personal files before reinstalling and explains how to create installation media and run Setup in its Windows installation-media instructions.
| Choose | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Clone or image | The original drive is readable and you want to preserve the existing installation. | You need an appropriate cloning or imaging process, a compatible destination drive, and a backup of important files. The general guidance does not establish one universal best method. |
| Reinstall or restore | The old drive is unreadable, or you want a fresh setup. | Prepare recovery or installation media and back up files first. A Windows clean installation removes personal files, applications, and manufacturer customizations; consult the laptop maker’s instructions for boot selection and device-specific drivers. |
4. Replace the drive safely
The exact screw locations, cover-removal method, battery procedure, and connector vary by laptop. Follow the service manual for your model rather than treating a general sequence or another laptop’s tutorial as universal.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
- Verify the parts and plan. Confirm that the drive is replaceable, the replacement matches the documented specifications, and you have any required bracket, cable, or adapter. Finish your backup and prepare either your cloning plan or recovery/install media.
- Shut down and disconnect. Fully shut down the laptop, unplug the charger and peripherals, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing or disabling the battery. Let residual charge dissipate only as directed by the manual.
- Reduce static risk. Use an antistatic work surface and grounded wrist strap where available. Keep the replacement in its static-shielded bag until needed, and handle drives by their edges or frame, as Seagate advises.
- Open the case using the model-specific procedure. Remove the cover and locate the storage drive as described in the service manual. Remove the retaining screws or bracket and disconnect the drive carefully. Transfer any required bracket or adapter to the replacement.
- Fit and secure the replacement. Seat the drive without forcing the connector, secure it with the specified hardware, and reassemble the laptop according to its manual.
- Start the laptop and complete setup. Reconnect power. Boot the successful clone, or start the prepared recovery or operating-system installation process. Confirm the system detects the drive and complete setup.
For example, the iFixit guide for the HP 15-db0027nf uses a PH0 screwdriver and plastic spudger for that model’s bottom cover and 2.5-inch SATA drive. Its particular screw locations, cover-opening motions, and drive-release steps apply to that HP model only.

If you cloned the old drive successfully, select the laptop’s normal boot option and verify that Windows or your other operating system starts from the replacement. If you are installing Windows from media, boot the laptop from that media and follow Setup. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for selecting a boot device and for installing device-specific drivers. Microsoft’s reinstallation guidance explains the installation-media process and warns that a clean installation removes personal files, apps, and manufacturer customizations.
