In Firefox 157, the most directly reported workaround is to turn off Nova in about:config by setting browser.nova.enabled to false. This disables the Nova interface as a whole, not just its titlebar gradient. If you want to keep Nova, a custom userChrome.css rule is an unsupported, version-sensitive experiment; no stable Mozilla-documented switch for removing only the gradient is established by the sources below.
Option 1: Turn off Nova
-
Type
about:configin Firefox’s address bar and press Enter. -
Accept the warning if Firefox displays one.
-
Search for
browser.nova.enabled. -
Change the preference to
false. If the preference is not present in your Firefox version, do not create it based on this instruction.
A Mozilla Support moderator offered this as a workaround for Firefox 157. It disables Nova’s broader redesign rather than targeting the titlebar alone, so other Nova interface changes will also disappear. Mozilla warns that changing advanced preferences can break Firefox or cause unexpected behavior, and this forum workaround is not a guarantee that the preference will remain available in later releases. See the Firefox Support discussion.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Option 2: Try another theme
A Mozilla Support discussion suggests trying the Firefox Proton theme as an appearance alternative. This is a broader visual change, not a confirmed way to remove only the gradient while retaining every Nova detail. Results may depend on the Firefox version and theme. See the discussion about the new tab and titlebar appearance.
Option 3: Experiment with userChrome.css
Custom CSS may offer more control over individual interface surfaces, but Mozilla does not officially support custom userChrome.css rules. Mozilla also cautions that modifying preferences through about:config is unsupported. A third-party article suggests the following rule, but it has not been verified here on current Firefox builds and may not reliably remove only the gradient:

Treat that snippet as an experiment, not an official or guaranteed fix. The CSS selector or Firefox interface may change between versions.

Why a gradient-only setting is not established
Mozilla’s Add-ons Community Blog says Firefox 157 shipped Nova on September 29, 2026. Its theme-authoring guidance describes gradients and controls such as backgrounds_area, which determines whether theme images cover the window or stay in the top toolbars, along with a toolbar-color recommendation. These are theme-authoring controls; the documentation does not establish a simple end-user switch to flatten only the titlebar. Read the Firefox 157 Nova theme guidance.

A Mozilla Bugzilla report describes a Windows Firefox 157 appearance with a horizontal grey-to-reddish gradient across the tab-strip/titlebar area and no simple flat-color option in the default theme at the time it was filed. That report documents a specific issue, not behavior guaranteed across operating systems, themes, or later Firefox releases. Read Bugzilla issue 2076618.

Set browser.nova.enabled to false |
Disables Nova as a whole, not just the gradient. | A Mozilla Support moderator reported it for Firefox 157; advanced preference changes can cause unexpected behavior. | Set the preference back to true, if it remains available in your version. |
| Try the Proton theme | Changes appearance more broadly; gradient-only removal is not established. | Suggested in a Mozilla Support discussion; outcome may vary. | Select your previous theme in Firefox’s appearance settings. |
| Use custom CSS | May target a particular interface surface, but the suggested selector is unverified on current builds. | Mozilla does not officially support custom userChrome.css rules; behavior is version-sensitive. |
Disable profile stylesheet loading and remove or rename the CSS file. |
