The result depends on what is behind the text: simple or textured areas are usually easier to reconstruct, while complex scenes may need Generative Fill, Content-Aware Patch, or manual retouching.
Before you start: preserve the original
Text that is part of the image pixels is not a separate editable text layer. Removing it means replacing the covered pixels; this workflow does not recover the original background hidden underneath the lettering.
Keep the edit reversible. Duplicate the image layer, or create a separate retouching layer before painting. Adobe explains nondestructive editing and separate-layer retouching in its Photoshop nondestructive editing guide.
Remove text with Content-Aware Fill
Content-Aware Fill is a good first choice for a fairly even background or a natural texture that continues around the lettering. Photoshop uses surrounding pixels to fill the selected area, and you can adjust which parts of the image it samples.

- Select the text. Open the image and choose a selection tool, such as Lasso, Object Selection, Quick Selection, or Magic Wand. Select the letters and include a narrow margin around their antialiased edges, but avoid nearby objects or details you want to preserve.
- Open the fill workspace. With the selection active, choose Edit > Content-Aware Fill. Photoshop opens a workspace where you can review and adjust the sampling area.
- Refine the sampling area. Keep background regions with similar texture, color, lighting, and direction. Exclude unrelated elements if Photoshop is borrowing them to fill the text area.
- Apply and inspect. Apply the fill, then check the result both at normal viewing size and zoomed in. Look for repeated patterns, blurred patches, halos, seams, or changes to nearby objects.
Adobe’s Content-Aware Fill instructions describe selecting an object, adjusting the sampling area, and applying the fill. If the result looks wrong, undo it and try a tighter or more carefully shaped selection, or change the sampling area before applying again.
Choose another method when the background calls for it

Try Generative Fill for a difficult area
Select the text and a modest surrounding margin, then use Generative Fill. Adobe says you can enter a prompt describing the desired result or leave the prompt blank for a fill based on surrounding pixels; Photoshop generates variations for you to inspect. Compare each option against the original, especially around nearby objects and edges. The feature uses generative credits, and its available models can change; check Adobe’s current Generative Fill help page for current instructions and availability.

Use Content-Aware Patch when you can choose a close match
For repeating surfaces, select the text area and extend the selection slightly beyond its edges. With the Content-Aware Patch tool, drag the selected area to a nearby region with a similar texture or pattern, then assess how the patch blends. Adjust Structure to control how closely the result follows image patterns and Color to control blending. Adobe’s Content-Aware Patch guide recommends this tool for surroundings with similar textures and patterns.
Clean up with healing or cloning
If a fill leaves a small mark or an edge mismatch, use the Spot Healing Brush, Healing Brush, or Clone Stamp for targeted cleanup. Paint on a separate retouching layer when possible; use Sample All Layers where appropriate so the tool can use the image below without painting directly on the original layer. How to improve a result that looks patched
- Visible text edges: Make sure the selection includes the antialiased fringe around each letter. A selection that is too tight can leave a colored outline.
- Unwanted objects copied into the fill: Remove those areas from Content-Aware Fill’s sampling region, or choose a better local source with Content-Aware Patch.
- Repeating or smeared texture: Try a different selection shape or sampling area. On a patterned background, test Patch with a similar source region instead of repeatedly applying the same fill.
- Nearby details changed: Reduce the selected margin so it does not include those details, or use a separate layer and mask to constrain cleanup. Check generated alternatives for spillover before keeping one.
- Small seams remain: Retouch only the artifacts with a healing or clone tool on a separate layer.
For small objects, Adobe’s retouching tutorial demonstrates the Spot Healing Brush; for larger objects, it demonstrates Content-Aware Fill. These are useful starting points, not a guarantee that one method will work cleanly on every image.

After cleanup, save a working file that retains your layers before exporting a flattened copy for sharing. This lets you revisit the retouch without losing the original image data or the separate cleanup work.
