Click the delete control for that protection.
These are Google’s documented steps for removing a protection rule. Google’s instructions for protecting, hiding, and editing sheets describe the same workflow.
If you can’t delete the protection
Sheet protection is governed by permissions. Spreadsheet owners control who can change protected ranges and sheets. Editors can manage protections, but cannot take permissions away from owners; viewers and commenters cannot change protection rules. If the delete control is unavailable or Google denies the change, ask the spreadsheet owner or a Workspace administrator to remove the rule or adjust your access.

Three related requests have different outcomes:
- Delete the protection rule: An authorized user removes the restriction from the original spreadsheet.
- Allow specific collaborators to edit: The owner or an authorized editor changes who may edit the protected sheet or range, while keeping the protection in place.
- Get an editable copy: Make a copy, if your access allows it, and work in that separate file. The original spreadsheet’s protection remains unchanged.
Protection is not a password or security boundary
Google says, “This shouldn’t be used as a security measure.” Protected sheets and ranges restrict editing; they do not encrypt data or keep it confidential. Google’s help explains that people may print, copy, paste, and import or export copies of a protected spreadsheet, and that a sheet cannot be protected with a password. Do not rely on sheet protection to hide sensitive information.

For authorized automation, Apps Script’s Protection class provides the remove() method to unprotect a range or sheet. The user running the script still needs edit permission for the file, and the script must be authorized. This is an automation route for users who already have the required access, not a way around the spreadsheet’s permissions.
