For a bare cast-iron grill grate, gently scrub away minor surface rust with a brush or scrubber approved by the grate’s maker, wash only if needed, dry it completely, then apply a thin coat of high-temperature oil and reseason it according to the manual. First check whether the grate is bare cast iron or porcelain-coated: the latter needs different care, and damaging its coating can expose it to corrosion.
Identify the grate before cleaning
Check the grill or grate model and its care manual before choosing a tool or cleaner. Bare cast iron and porcelain-coated cast iron are not interchangeable: Weber warns that sharp tools can damage the porcelain enamel on its coated grates and expose the surface to corrosion. Use that warning for porcelain-coated grates, not as a universal instruction for every grill.
If you cannot confirm the surface or its care instructions, look up the model before scrubbing. A method that is suitable for one maker’s bare cast iron may not suit a coated grate or another manufacturer’s product.
Remove minor rust from compatible bare cast iron
Scrub gently with an approved tool
Napoleon recommends gentle scrubbing to remove minor rust from its cast-iron grids. It identifies brass or wood-fiber brushes as suitable and advises against stainless-steel brushes for those grids. Lodge, by contrast, recommends a nylon scrubber for its Sportsman’s Pro cast-iron grate. These differing recommendations are a reason to follow the instructions for your specific grate rather than assuming one tool is right for all cast iron.

Use the tool to loosen surface rust without scraping aggressively. If the rust is extensive rather than minor, check the grate maker’s guidance before trying a more intensive treatment.
Wash only if needed, then dry fully
If the grate is particularly dirty, Napoleon permits washing its cast-iron grids with soap and warm water. Dry the grate completely and reseason it immediately afterward; Lodge likewise advises prompt drying after washing its Sportsman’s Pro grate. Moisture left on cast iron can undermine the protective seasoning.

Oil and reseason the grate
Napoleon’s procedure for its grids is to coat both sides with a thin layer of high-temperature oil, such as shortening, flaxseed oil, or canola oil, then heat the grate at 350–400°F for 30–60 minutes. Keep the temperature below the oil’s smoke point. Those temperature and timing figures are Napoleon’s instructions, not a universal specification; use your grate maker’s oil, heat, and timing directions when they differ.
- Confirm that the grate is bare cast iron and follow its maker’s cleaning guidance.
- Remove minor rust gently with a compatible brush or scrubber.
- Wash only if needed, then dry the grate completely.
- Apply a thin oil layer to both sides if directed by the maker.
- Heat it for the temperature and duration specified in the grate manual.
What to do about heavier rust
For significant rust, Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove describes alternatives on its outdoor-grill FAQ, including a vinegar-and-salt soak and a baking-soda method. These are that manufacturer’s published options, not a default treatment for every cast-iron grate. Before using either, verify that the method is compatible with your grate and follow its maker’s care instructions.

Prevent rust from returning
- Clean the grate as its manufacturer directs and dry it thoroughly.
- Apply a light protective coating of cooking oil when the maker recommends it.
- Store the grate clean and dry. Lodge recommends a dry storage location for its cast-iron grill; Broil King advises storing clean, dry grids in a dry, warm place and coating them with cooking oil for extended storage.
- Inspect grill brushes and replace one when it begins shedding bristles. Napoleon warns that loose bristles can be dangerous if ingested.
Keep hot-grate cleanup separate from rust removal
Lodge attributes this food-residue tip to Kris, Chef at Lodge Cast Iron: “While the grill is still hot, loosely crumple some aluminum foil. Using a pair of tongs, rub the aluminum foil over the grill grate to remove any food residue.” This is for food residue on a hot grate; it is not the rust-removal and reseasoning process for a cooled, rusty grate.
