Wipe rainbow-colored marks on a cool stainless steel pan with white vinegar and a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse and dry it. If the tint remains, a cookware cleanser may help—but use it only as directed and rinse it off promptly. Rainbow tint is commonly a cosmetic effect of heat, not a sign that the pan has stopped working.
Why stainless steel cookware turns rainbow-colored
Cookware makers describe blue, gold, bronze, or iridescent marks as heat discoloration or heat tint. Hestan explains that high heat can form a thin oxide layer on the metal, creating the colors, and says the effect is cosmetic and does not affect cookware performance. All-Clad says extended exposure above 500°F can change stainless steel’s color without affecting performance. That temperature is All-Clad’s guidance, not a universal threshold for every pan.
Color alone cannot confirm the cause of a particular mark. The advice below is for rainbow or blue heat tint, not burnt-on food or white mineral spots; those marks may call for different care. Follow the instructions for your specific cookware if they differ from these general methods.
Remove rainbow discoloration with vinegar first
- Let the pan cool. Avoid cleaning a hot pan. If needed, rinse away loose residue with warm water.
- Wipe the tint. Dampen a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge with white vinegar and gently wipe the discolored area. All-Clad specifically recommends white vinegar for blue or rainbow coloring. Tramontina suggests equal parts white vinegar and water for lighter rainbow marks.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse the pan thoroughly with water, then dry it promptly with a soft towel to help prevent water spots.
Vinegar is the simplest first step supported by the cookware makers cited here. The available guidance does not establish a controlled winner, success rate, or universal compatibility across every cookware finish.

Use a cookware cleanser only if the mark remains
A cookware-specific cleanser is an optional next step, not a requirement if vinegar removes the tint. Bar Keepers Friend’s Cookware Cleanser & Polish is described by its maker as suitable for cookware discoloration, and Tramontina also recommends it for heat discoloration.
- Wet the pan’s surface and apply the product as directed on its current label.
- Rub gently with a wet cloth or sponge; do not scrub aggressively.
- Rinse thoroughly within one minute. The product directions allow a paste for a difficult stain for up to one minute, and Tramontina gives the same maximum contact-time caution.
- Dry the pan after rinsing.
Check both the cleanser label and your cookware maker’s care instructions before use. Bar Keepers Friend contains oxalic acid, and the cited directions warn against leaving it on the pan longer than one minute.

Other options and methods to avoid
Vinegar-and-water boil
KitchenAid says a vinegar-and-water mixture can be boiled if interior discoloration remains. Its guidance cited here does not state a ratio or duration, so do not assume one; check your pan maker’s instructions before trying this method.
Citric acid
WAHEI FREIZ gives a more intensive method using a solution of ten parts water to one part citric acid, boiled for about ten minutes. Check the cookware maker’s instructions before using this approach, especially if its care guidance differs.

Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaners
All-Clad warns against oven cleaners, steel wool, steel scouring pads, harsh detergents, and detergents containing bleach or peroxide. Hestan also cautions against steel wool and abrasive pads because they can scratch or dull the finish. Use a soft cloth or sponge rather than an abrasive scrubber.

Do not automatically use rainbow-tint instructions for every mark on a stainless steel pan. All-Clad gives separate care directions for white hard-water spots and burnt-on food: its guidance discusses vinegar-water boiling for white spots and baking soda for burnt food. Identify the type of mark and consult the pan maker’s care guide before choosing a remedy.
