Microsoft’s current user instructions document how to upload or change a Microsoft 365 profile picture, but they do not document a consumer-facing Remove, Delete, or Clear command.
What you can do depends on the account: a work or school photo is controlled by Microsoft 365 and possibly your organization, while a personal Outlook.com photo is managed through your personal Microsoft account.
Remove a profile picture from Outlook 365: what is currently possible
For a Microsoft 365 work or school account, Outlook displays your organizational profile photo. The same photo can appear in Microsoft 365, Teams, Outlook profile cards, and other Microsoft services.
Microsoft’s current end-user documentation provides these actions:

- Upload a photo
- Change the existing photo
- Apply or save the new photo
It does not provide a documented user-facing option to restore the account to initials by deleting the photo. If your organization permits profile-photo changes, the practical supported option is to replace the current image with another supported image. If you need the picture completely removed, an administrator or your organization’s IT or HR department may need to handle it.
Try the current Outlook on the web path
For a Microsoft 365 work or school account, use this route:
- Open Outlook on the web and sign in.
- Select your name or profile picture at the top of the page.
- In the My account pane, select your profile picture again.
- Select Change your photo.
- Select Upload a new photo and choose an image.
- Select Apply.
This changes the Microsoft 365 account photo rather than an Outlook-only avatar. Microsoft’s current dialog may show only Upload a new photo and Apply; the absence of a Remove photo button is expected.
Use the Microsoft 365 My Account portal
You can also manage a work or school photo outside the Outlook mailbox:
- Go to myaccount.microsoft.com.
- Select the Edit icon on the current profile photo.
- Upload a replacement image or change the existing photo.
- Select Save.
If the edit icon is missing or unavailable, your organization has probably restricted profile-picture changes. Microsoft notes that IT or HR can control this setting. In that situation, changing Outlook settings, clearing browser data, or reinstalling Outlook will not remove the organization-controlled photo.
Try the Outlook profile-card route
Some Microsoft 365 tenants expose the photo control through the profile card:
- In Outlook, select your own profile picture.
- Select Update your profile.
- When the profile page opens in Delve, select the camera icon next to the profile picture.
- Select Change your photo.
- Choose a file.
- Select either Save and close or Set as profile photo, depending on which version of the page you see.
This is another change-photo workflow, not a documented deletion workflow. The labels can vary between Microsoft 365 environments.

Change the picture from an Office desktop app
Outlook for Windows does not have a separate local Outlook avatar that you can delete. The desktop route leads to your account-level profile page:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Select File.
- Select Account.
- Select Change photo.
- Complete the change on the organization’s personal profile page.
Because this is an account-level Microsoft 365 picture, the result can eventually appear across Outlook, Teams, Microsoft 365, and profile cards.
Personal Outlook.com accounts use a different page
If your address is a personal Outlook.com account rather than a work or school account, manage the picture through your Microsoft account:
- Open the Microsoft account website and sign in.
- Open Your info.
- Select Add a photo or Change photo.
- Choose a replacement image and save the change.
Microsoft’s current personal-account instructions also focus on adding or changing the image. They do not specify a supported operation for reverting the account to initials by removing the photo.
What to do if you need a photo-free account
There is no universal, documented end-user procedure that guarantees removal from every Outlook or Microsoft 365 surface. Use this order:
- Check the correct account type. Work or school accounts use organizational Microsoft 365 controls; personal Outlook.com accounts use the Microsoft account profile page.
- Look for an actual Remove, Delete, or Clear control. Do not assume it exists just because an older guide shows one.
- Ask IT or HR for a removal. For a work or school account, administrators may have controls unavailable to ordinary users.
- Allow time for synchronization. A successful change may not appear everywhere immediately.
If the aim is simply to avoid displaying a personal photograph, replacing it with a neutral company-approved image or another permitted graphic may be the only self-service option available in your tenant. Check your organization’s policy before uploading a logo or placeholder.

| Where the change was made | Possible delay |
|---|---|
| New profile experience | Up to 24 hours |
| Other Microsoft 365 viewers | Up to 36 hours |
| Delve or SharePoint editor | Up to 72 hours |
| Outlook on the web | The new photo may appear the next time you sign in to Microsoft 365 |
Different apps can therefore show the old picture for a while. Sign out and back in after the relevant delay, then check Outlook on the web, Teams, and a profile card before assuming that the change failed.
Image-file limitations
If you are replacing the picture, use a normal static image format. Microsoft states that most static image files are supported on PC, macOS, iOS, and Android, but HEIC and animated GIF files are not supported for Microsoft account photos. A JPEG or PNG is a safer choice.

Do not remove the Outlook mail profile
The Windows path File → Account Settings → Manage Profiles → Show Profiles → Remove deletes an Outlook mail profile and its configured accounts. It does not remove the Microsoft 365 profile picture. Using it can create a new mail-setup problem without changing the avatar stored in the cloud.
Do not delete the Windows AccountPictures cache
The folder C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures relates to Windows user-account picture history. It is not the cloud Microsoft 365 profile photo shown in Outlook. Deleting files there will not reliably remove the organizational Outlook picture.
Do not rely on old Outlook Web App instructions
Older guides often use Settings → Options → Account. Microsoft identifies that route as legacy Outlook Web App guidance for Exchange Server 2013 or 2010. It is not the current Microsoft 365 path for Outlook on the web or Exchange Server 2016 and 2019.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the old photo may still be visible
A stale image does not necessarily mean that the upload failed. Microsoft 365 services cache profile information and synchronize it between applications. Also check whether you changed the correct identity if Outlook contains both a personal and a work account.

FAQ
Can I completely delete my Outlook 365 profile picture?
Microsoft’s current end-user instructions do not document a universal Remove, Delete, or Clear command for a Microsoft 365 profile photo. Whether an administrator can remove it depends on the account and organization’s controls.
Why does Outlook show Change your photo but not Remove photo?
The current Microsoft 365 interface is designed to upload or replace the photo. Microsoft’s documented Outlook on the web workflow uses Change your photo, Upload a new photo, and Apply; it does not promise a Remove photo button.
Will deleting my Outlook profile remove my picture?
No. Removing an Outlook mail profile deletes local mail-account configuration. The Microsoft 365 profile picture is stored at the account or organization level.
Why is the Edit icon missing from my work profile?
Your employer or school may have restricted profile-picture editing. Microsoft says IT or HR can control whether users may change profile photos.
How long does it take for an Outlook profile-photo change to sync?
Microsoft’s profile-card guidance says changes can take up to 24 hours in the new profile experience, up to 36 hours for some viewers, and up to 72 hours when made through Delve or the SharePoint editor.
Can I remove an Outlook.com picture from Windows AccountPictures?
No. The Windows AccountPictures folder stores Windows account-picture history, not the cloud photo used by Outlook.com or Microsoft 365.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Microsoft currently documents changing or replacing an Outlook/Microsoft 365 profile picture, not a universal end-user removal command. Use the correct account route—Outlook on the web, myaccount.microsoft.com, an Office app, or your personal Microsoft account’s Your info page. If no removal control is available, ask your organization’s IT or HR team; do not delete your Outlook mail profile or Windows picture-cache files.
