To free space without deleting a song from your music library, choose Remove Download. To remove a song from the library—and, when Sync Library is on, other synced devices—choose Delete from Library. On Windows, iTunes also distinguishes removing a library entry from deleting the computer file. The right steps depend on whether the music is downloaded to your iPhone, managed by Apple Music, stored in iTunes, or synced from a computer.
Choose the right removal action first
Apple uses similar-looking commands for changes with different effects. Identify where the copy you want to remove is stored before you act.

On Windows, check which app you have open: Apple Music, iTunes, and Apple Devices have different controls. In Apple Music, the cloud feature is called Sync Library; iTunes documentation refers to iCloud Music Library.
Remove music from an iPhone
Remove a download but keep the library item
- Open the Apple Music app.
- Touch and hold the song or album.
- Tap Remove, then Remove Download.
This clears the downloaded copy from the iPhone, while keeping the item in the library. A song from the Apple Music catalog can still be played when the iPhone is connected to the internet. Apple Support

Delete a song or album from the library
- In Apple Music, touch and hold the song or album.
- Tap Remove, then Delete from Library.
This removes the item from the library and its playlists. If Sync Library is enabled, the deletion also applies to other synced devices, so use this option only if you intend to remove the library item rather than just its iPhone download. Apple Support

- Remove all downloads or an artist’s downloads: Go to Settings > Apps > Music > Downloaded Music > Edit, then tap the delete button beside All Songs or the artist.
- Remove Apple Music songs from this iPhone: Go to Settings > Apps > Music and turn off Sync Library. This changes what is available on this iPhone; it does not delete the cloud library. Purchased music and music synced from a computer remain on the iPhone.
- Let iPhone manage downloads: At Settings > Apps > Music > Optimize Storage, enable automatic removal of downloaded music that has not been played recently when storage is low.

Remove music on Windows
In the Apple Music app
- Open Songs or Albums.
- Choose More next to the item.
- Select Remove Download to clear the PC copy but keep the library item, or Delete from Library to remove the item from the library.
With Sync Library enabled, deleting from the library affects other synced devices too. Apple notes that if the app removes an item immediately without asking whether to keep or move its file, it can be added and downloaded again from Apple Music. Apple Support

In iTunes for Windows
- Choose Music > Library and select the item.
- Press Delete and confirm.
- Choose Keep File to remove only the library entry, or Move to Recycle Bin to remove the local file as well.
A song in a Smart Playlist with Live updating enabled may not be removable from that playlist selection. If iTunes removes a song without offering the file choice, Apple says it can be added and downloaded from Apple Music again. Apple iTunes User Guide
Remove a song from iCloud Music Library in iTunes
For Apple Music or iTunes Match users, iTunes offers a choice between removing just the PC download and removing the item from the cloud library:

- Go to Music > Library and select the song.
- Click More.
- Choose Remove Download to remove the PC copy while leaving the song in iCloud Music Library. To remove it from both the computer and cloud library, choose Delete from Library, then Delete Song.
Deleting from iCloud Music Library also removes the song from iOS and iPadOS devices where that library is enabled. A copy already downloaded to another computer remains there until you delete it manually. Availability of iCloud Music Library varies by country or region. Apple iTunes User Guide

Music synced from a computer is managed differently from an Apple Music cloud download. Use Apple Devices on Windows to deselect the tracks on the iPhone:

- Connect the iPhone to the Windows device by USB/USB-C or Wi-Fi.
- In Apple Devices, select the iPhone in the sidebar, then select Music.
- Deselect the tracks you want to remove and choose Apply.
This removes the synced tracks from the iPhone while retaining them on the Windows computer. If you remove a track from the Windows device itself, Apple says it will also be removed from the iPhone on its next sync. Conversely, a track you removed manually from the iPhone may return on the next sync if it is still selected on the computer. Apple Devices User Guide Apple Devices User Guide, version 1.4
Why deleted music comes back after syncing
A computer sync can restore music that is still selected for transfer. In Apple Devices, open the iPhone’s Music settings, deselect the tracks you no longer want on the phone, and choose Apply. If the computer’s music source is deleted, the iPhone copy is removed on its next sync. Apple Support
Also check which kind of music you removed: turning off Sync Library removes Apple Music songs from that iPhone without deleting the library, while computer-synced and purchased music remain. Manual syncing from a Windows computer requires Sync Library to be off, and Apple Music subscription songs cannot be synced using that manual method. Apple Devices User Guide, version 1.4
