Rinse with warm water, pat dry, and moisturize. If pigment remains, don’t scrub harder or keep washing; give your skin a break and follow the face paint’s label.
Before you start: check the face-paint label
Wash your hands and look for removal directions on the makeup or face-paint package. Face paints can differ, so there is no single removal method that is right for every product. Avoid harsh solvents or scraping, and don’t assume that oil, alcohol, wipes, or ordinary soap is suitable for all paints.
Remove makeup with the gentlest method that works
For regular makeup
Dampen your face with warm—not hot—water. Apply a mild cleanser and gently move your fingertips over the skin in small circles. Rinse thoroughly. Avoid rubbing with a washcloth or sponge, especially if your skin is sensitive or prone to rosacea.
For waterproof or long-wear makeup
Use a makeup remover or micellar water first if needed, following its label. Cleveland Clinic describes oil-based cleansers as useful for breaking down waterproof makeup and micellar water as an alternative before a water-based cleanser. Rinse and cleanse gently if residue remains. The right approach depends on the product and your skin; a second cleanse is not automatically necessary. Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Jane Wu, MD, says, “For most people, washing your face once thoroughly with a gentle cleanser is more than adequate.” Cleveland Clinic’s guide to double cleansing explains the options.

Keep cleansing gentle, especially on sensitive skin
Scrubbing to remove makeup can irritate skin, and harsh cleansing can make irritation worse. Use your fingertips rather than a rough cloth, sponge, or exfoliating tool. Don’t add exfoliating acids or alcohol-based products, and don’t repeat washes to force stubborn pigment off. Stop if your skin stings or becomes more irritated. The American Academy of Dermatology’s guidance on skin-care habits warns against scrubbing; it also advises gentle cleansing for oily skin, which is not a reason to wash more forcefully.
If you have sensitive or rosacea-prone skin, choose a mild cleanser and fragrance-free skin care; “unscented” does not necessarily mean fragrance-free. Use warm water, rinse well, pat dry, and moisturize. See the American Academy of Dermatology’s rosacea skin-care tips for its recommendations.

After cleansing: rinse, pat dry, and moisturize
Rinse away all cleanser with warm water. Pat your skin gently with a clean towel rather than rubbing, then apply a simple moisturizer. If color remains, check the paint maker’s instructions and let your skin rest instead of escalating friction or adding a harsher product.

If redness or itching develops, stop using the suspected product. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or concern you. A rash does not by itself establish that the cause is an allergy. Facial swelling or hives can signal a severe reaction; breathing difficulty, vomiting, or abdominal pain calls for emergency services. Cleveland Clinic’s guidance on makeup for children discusses minor and severe reactions. For children, use mild cleansing and remove makeup before bed; don’t continue home removal through pain or burning.
