To remove .html or .php from a URL safely, make the extensionless address canonical: permanently redirect the old address to it, then internally route that clean path to the real file or application handler. The title’s “Extention” is a misspelling; the correct term is extension.

What removing a file extension from a URL actually means

This is a routing change, not a file rename by itself. A browser requests a clean path such as /page; the web server maps it behind the scenes to a file such as /page.html or to an application route. Visitors continue to see /page in the address bar.

Use two distinct operations: a client-visible permanent redirect from the old extension URL, and an internal rewrite from the clean URL to its destination. Apache’s guide explains the distinction between redirects and internal mapping, and identifies a dedicated Redirect directive as the cleanest option when server configuration access is available: Apache URL remapping.

Plan the canonical URL before changing rules

  • Choose one canonical form for each page, including whether paths end in a slash and which scheme and host to use.
  • Redirect old .html or .php addresses to the selected clean form. Do not leave both versions serving the same page as independently indexable URLs.
  • Keep redirect rules separate from internal routing rules. The redirect changes what the browser displays; the internal rewrite does not.
  • Check that a clean path with no matching file or application route returns a genuine 404, rather than falling through to a redirect loop or unrelated page.

Apache: redirect old addresses and rewrite clean paths

Apache’s mod_rewrite evaluates a regular-expression pattern, a substitution, and optional flags. The pattern’s path base depends on context: in server or virtual-host configuration it includes the URL path, while in per-directory contexts such as .htaccess Apache removes the directory prefix before matching. Query strings are not part of the RewriteRule pattern. See the Apache mod_rewrite introduction.

A safe setup has a permanent redirect for old extension-bearing URLs and a separate internal rewrite for clean paths. Add file-existence conditions appropriate to your layout so rules do not collide with real files or recurse. Apache’s remapping examples demonstrate checking that a new file exists with -f and that an old file does not exist with !-f before applying a compatibility rewrite.

Configuration context matters. A rule copied into .htaccess may not behave like the same rule in a virtual host, because the path being matched differs. Apache also notes that RewriteBase may be needed when the URL path is not directly beneath the document root. Review the Apache per-directory rewrite guide before adapting a rule.

NGINX: place redirects before internal routing

In NGINX, use a permanent response such as return 301 for an old URL, then map the clean path internally with a rewrite or a try_files-style fallback suited to the site’s actual file and application layout. Do not copy Apache syntax directly: NGINX uses different directives and configuration contexts.

NGINX processes rewrite directives in order. Its last flag ends the current rewrite sequence and starts a new location search; break stops rewrite processing in the current context. Put canonical redirects before internal fallbacks, and review the exact behavior against the NGINX rewrite module documentation and rewrite processing rules. Incorrect ordering can create loops or route a request to the wrong handler.

Apache and NGINX compared

Decision point Apache NGINX
Rule syntax mod_rewrite uses a pattern, substitution, and optional flags; Redirect is also available for redirects. rewrite uses a regular expression and replacement URI; return 301 can issue a permanent redirect.
Configuration context Rules can be in server or virtual-host configuration, .htaccess, or a <Directory> block. The match path differs by context. Rules are processed in NGINX configuration contexts; directive order and location searching affect routing.
Internal routing Use a rewrite to map a clean path to a file or handler without changing the browser URL. Use an internal rewrite or a suitable try_files-style mapping for the site’s layout.
Collision and loop safeguards Existence conditions such as -f and !-f can prevent inappropriate remapping; verify the path base. Order redirects and internal fallbacks deliberately, and check rewrite flags and location searches for loops.

Test the change before relying on it

  1. Request a clean URL directly. Confirm it loads the intended content while the address bar remains extensionless.
  2. Request the old .html or .php URL. Confirm it returns a permanent redirect to the chosen clean URL, not a chain of redirects.
  3. Try a missing clean path. Confirm it returns a real 404 rather than redirecting repeatedly or serving an unrelated page.
  4. Test URLs with query strings, paths in nested directories, and existing assets. Confirm the page and its resources still resolve correctly.
  5. Check both the configured context and the final canonical scheme, host, and slash policy. Recheck after deployment for redirect loops or duplicate reachable forms.
