Apple does not document a supported button or setting that deletes Apple Intelligence model files on macOS 27. The only Apple-provided path is the Storage pane, which lets you measure how much space the feature uses and what remains available. Two third-party routes have been reported: a manual Recovery-mode deletion of one model folder, described by AppleInsider on 2026-09-24, and a community utility called RemoveMacAI, covered by MacRumors on 2026-10-06. Both work by removing files that Apple does not expose for routine deletion, both cost you Apple Intelligence features, and neither guarantees the space stays free. Start by measuring, then decide whether those trade-offs are worth it.
Start with the storage check you can rely on
Use Apple’s own Storage pane first. It shows where your space is going and whether Apple Intelligence is taking a meaningful share, and it requires no changes to the system.
- Click the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select General in the sidebar, then click Storage.
- Wait for the category list to finish calculating. Note the Apple Intelligence figure if it appears, and separately note the Available value shown for the disk.
- Expand the System Data entry if you want more detail. Apple describes its contents as managed by macOS, so you should not try to delete items from it by hand.
Apple says categories vary by Mac and by the apps and files stored on it. A category that is missing from your list does not mean the models are absent. Apple’s guidance also distinguishes free space from available space: available space can include purgeable caches that macOS will clear when it needs room, so a Mac can report the same bytes as both available and used. Record both numbers before and after any change so you are comparing like with like.
Why the reported numbers do not match
The most common surprise is that the folder size, the Storage category, and the free-space gain are three different measurements. In AppleInsider’s single test on one Mac, the GenerativeModels folder held 23 GB, the Apple Intelligence category dropped from 27.59 GB to 3.07 GB (a reduction of 24.52 GB calculated from those two readings), and available space rose by about 14 GB. The gap between the category drop and the available-space gain shows that category accounting and free space are not the same thing.

Apple’s published capacity guidance for Apple Intelligence is also easy to misread. AppleInsider cites Apple as stating that the feature requires up to 14 GB of storage on Macs with an M3 or later chip and at least 12 GB of unified memory, or up to 8 GB on other compatible Macs. That is a requirement for the feature, not a promise of how much space a removal will recover on your machine. The article cited here was published in 2026, and the figures were not reproduced by an independent test.
Treat these numbers as an order-of-magnitude guide. Your own before-and-after readings from the Storage pane are the only figures that apply to your Mac.
What removing the models costs you
Removing the local models disables the features that depend on them. Decide whether you use any of these before you touch the files. MacRumors lists the following as becoming unavailable when the models are removed:

The RemoveMacAI project adds that apps built on Apple’s on-device Foundation Models framework are affected, along with the Shortcuts “Use Model” action, Visual Intelligence, and natural-language editing in Calendar. Those are the project’s own statements about its tool, not Apple documentation.
Turning off Siri or changing Siri’s language does not, according to AppleInsider’s reporting, delete the downloaded files. If your goal is reclaiming space, those settings are not a substitute for removal.
The three routes compared
| Route | Who documents it | What it changes | SIP status | Reversibility | Storage reporting after removal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Storage pane (measure only) | Apple Support | Nothing; it shows categories and available space | Not applicable | Not applicable | Shows the current category and available space |
| Manual Recovery deletion of one model folder | AppleInsider’s reported test; not an Apple procedure | Removes the named GenerativeModels folder in the Data volume | Not stated in the report | Not stated; the report recommends a backup first | In the single test, the category fell sharply and available space rose by about 14 GB |
| RemoveMacAI | Unaffiliated open-source project; described by MacRumors on 2026-10-06 | Removes models through Apple’s asset service and applies a configuration profile to block re-downloads | Stays enabled, according to the project’s README | Changes can be undone, according to the project | The project’s FAQ says Storage may keep listing Apple Intelligence until macOS deletes the files on its own schedule |
The manual Recovery method, and why it is risky
AppleInsider describes a procedure that removes a single asset folder from Recovery. The publication states that this is not an Apple-documented storage-management procedure, and it tested the steps on one Mac. Do not treat it as routine maintenance.

Safeguards before you start
- Back up the Mac with Time Machine or another full backup. The procedure involves deleting system-managed files, and a wrong path can cause damage.
- Confirm you are comfortable working in Recovery and can restore from a backup if something goes wrong.
- Do not use wildcards. Remove only the folder named com_apple_MobileAsset_UAF_FM_GenerativeModels.
- Do not delete the Visual, Overrides, or downloadDir items. AppleInsider warns against removing them.
The reported sequence
- Back up the Mac.
- Restart into Recovery and open Terminal from the Utilities menu.
- Mount or unlock the Data volume, then check its actual mount name rather than assuming it.
- Verify that the AssetsV2 directory exists at the expected location on that volume.
- Remove only the GenerativeModels folder named above, then restart normally.
- Return to the Storage pane and compare the new readings with your earlier ones.
AppleInsider reports that the Mac started normally after its test. It also reports that the model files were downloaded again in a beta tester’s experience. That observation is from a beta user and is not an Apple statement, so do not assume the removal will persist. The reporting does not establish that Low Data Mode reliably stops the models from returning. Low Data Mode is set per network and may also affect unrelated background transfers.

RemoveMacAI: a third-party utility
RemoveMacAI is an open-source native app and command-line tool. Its project documentation describes the following behaviour, and each point comes from the project rather than from Apple:
- It removes Apple Intelligence models through Apple’s asset service rather than by deleting files directly.
- It applies a configuration profile that directs model downloads to a closed local port, which the project says prevents redownloading.
- It keeps System Integrity Protection (SIP) enabled and says it does not modify anything under /System.
- It can undo its changes.
The README lists Apple silicon and macOS 27 as requirements, reports testing on macOS 27.0, and states that macOS 27.0.1 requires version 0.2.3 or later. Version requirements change with each release, so check the project’s current page before installing. MacRumors describes the tool as an unaffiliated open-source command-line utility and cites reclaimed storage of 12 GB or more. That figure should not be treated as a guarantee for your Mac.

- Use only the Storage pane if you only need to understand where the space is going or you rely on Apple Intelligence features such as Writing Tools, Image Playground, or Photos Clean Up.
- Consider the manual Recovery method only if you are comfortable with Recovery, have a verified backup, and accept that the procedure is not Apple-supported and may need repeating after updates.
- Consider RemoveMacAI if you want an undoable, scripted approach and accept that its claims come from its maintainers. Verify the macOS and version requirements first.
Expect persistence to vary. The reporting here covers one publication’s test and one project’s documentation. It does not establish how removals behave across every Mac, network, language setting, or future macOS 27 update, so check your Storage readings after each system update.

Also note that an external SSD adds separate capacity; it does not remove the models or reclaim internal storage.
Plain-language summary of the choice: measure first, decide whether you need the features, and treat every removal method as a reversible experiment you check after each update.
Apple Support’s storage guide does not name Apple Intelligence model deletion, so anything beyond the Storage pane is a community route with its own risks.
