A changed default alone does not prove your computer is infected. If the setting changes back, unfamiliar extensions return, or searches redirect, investigate extensions and recently installed programs; the browser may also be managed by your workplace or school.
First, identify what is changing
Search settings belong to a browser, not usually to the computer as a whole. Changing the default provider is the narrowest fix when the browser is otherwise behaving normally. A recurring change or unexpected redirect is a reason to investigate further, but an unfamiliar provider by itself is not proof of malware.
- One-time change: Set your preferred provider in the browser settings.
- The provider changes back, or searches redirect: Check extensions and recently installed programs, then consider a browser reset.
- The setting is locked or says it is managed: An organization policy may control it; contact your work or school administrator if the device is managed by them.
Change the default search engine in your browser
Use the path for the browser where the unwanted search engine appears. Menu labels and available providers can vary by version, country, and management settings.
Google Chrome
- Open Chrome and select Settings.
- Select Search engine, then choose Change under “Search engine.”
- Choose the provider you want to use.
To inspect or manage search shortcuts and site-search entries, open Settings > Search engine > Manage search engines and site search. Google notes that available default providers can vary by country, and a work or school administrator may choose the default. Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge Settings.
- Go to Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected services > Address bar and search.
- Choose the provider used in the address bar.
Edge can add a site that supports OpenSearch after you perform a search on that site. If the provider you want is not listed, consult Microsoft’s Edge instructions for current options.
Mozilla Firefox
- Open Firefox Settings.
- Select Search.
- Choose your default search engine and manage search shortcuts in that section. Use its controls to add or remove providers as needed.

Safari and other browsers
Do not use Chrome, Edge, or Firefox menu paths in Safari or another browser. The current Safari steps are not established here; consult Apple’s current documentation for your device and Safari version.
If the search engine keeps returning or searches redirect
A browser setting that will not stay changed, unwanted extensions or toolbars that return, and unfamiliar redirects are among the possible signs of unwanted software or malware identified by Google. They are warning signs to investigate, not a diagnosis on their own.

Review extensions
Open the browser’s extension or add-on manager and remove extensions you do not recognize or trust. If you are unsure whether an extension is legitimate, check its publisher and whether you intentionally installed it before removing it. Then set your preferred search engine again and see whether the setting stays put.
Review recently installed programs
If the problem continues, look for computer programs installed around the time the search changes began. Google provides manual removal guidance for unwanted programs on Windows and Mac, along with steps for checking browser extensions: Remove unwanted ads, pop-ups, and malware in Chrome. Avoid deleting registry entries or running scripts you do not understand; the cited guidance does not establish a universal procedure for doing so.

Reset Chrome if the problem persists
- In Chrome, open Settings > Reset settings.
- Select Restore settings to their original defaults.
- Select Reset settings to confirm.
Google says this reset restores key settings, including the default search engine, homepage and startup pages, extensions, themes, and content settings. It does not delete or change bookmarks or saved passwords. You may need to turn trusted extensions back on afterward. A reset is broader than changing the default, so try the narrower steps first. An employer or school may enforce browser settings, including the default search provider. In Chrome, enter chrome://management in the address bar to see whether the browser is managed, or open chrome://policy to view policies. Edge also supports organization policies for default search. If this is a work or school device—or Chrome or Edge indicates that it is managed—ask the administrator before trying to override a locked setting. On a personal Chrome browser that should not be managed, Google advises reviewing the signed-in account, policies, programs, and extensions, then restarting or resetting as appropriate.
When to treat it as browser hijacking
Mozilla Support describes persistent inability to change the homepage, remove a toolbar, or change search settings as a likely sign that a browser has been hijacked. That is a useful reason to investigate, not a claim that every unfamiliar search provider is malicious. Start with extensions and recently installed programs, and use a Chrome reset if the issue persists. For a managed browser, resolve the policy question with the administrator instead.
For Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, the best next action depends on the symptom: change a user-controlled default for a one-time change; investigate extensions and programs for recurring changes or redirects; reset Chrome if its settings remain altered; and ask an administrator about organization-managed settings.
