Don’t uninstall an unfamiliar remote-access app on a work or school device until you’ve confirmed who manages it and how support will continue. Identify the app, verify its authorization with IT through a trusted contact route, and agree on a specific removal and recovery plan. If a suspicious session is active, disconnect it and report it immediately.
First, determine who owns the device and the remote-access tool
Remote-access software can be a legitimate way for IT staff to support devices, but the same tools can also be misused. Its presence—or the product name alone—does not establish whether it is authorized. CISA, NSA, FBI, MS-ISAC, and INCD describe both legitimate operational uses and security risks in their Guide to Securing Remote Access Software, published June 6, 2023.
Before changing anything, establish whether the device is personal or managed by an employer, school, client, or other organization. Note the app’s displayed name, publisher, version, and any service or process name you can see. Avoid removing several unfamiliar programs at once; doing so can make it harder to identify what disrupted support or connectivity.
If the device is managed, contact IT or security using a known route such as the organization’s directory, help-desk number, or internal support portal. Do not trust contact details supplied by someone who unexpectedly asked to connect. Microsoft’s guidance for Quick Assist says: “Never allow a connection to your device by someone claiming to be “IT Support” unless you initiated the interaction with them.” The page was last updated September 30, 2025.

Agree on how support will continue before removal
Ask the responsible administrator to confirm which remote-support method is approved, how you can request help during the change, and who can restore the device if it loses its management connection. If it is your personal device and a trusted technician or organization installed the app, check whether it is required for support before uninstalling it. An unsolicited helper is not a safe way to preserve access to support.
When an organization chooses a replacement, compare its identity controls and operational limits rather than assuming one remote-help product fits every environment. Microsoft’s Intune Remote Help documentation, last updated August 25, 2026, describes organizational Entra accounts for helpers and sharers, role-based controls, and session reports. It also documents limits: some auditing is restricted on unenrolled devices, and conditional-access rules do not apply to unattended access.

- Ownership and authentication: Who can start a session, and how can the user verify the helper’s identity?
- User participation: Must someone at the device accept the session, or can access be unattended?
- Permissions: Can helpers view, request control, or elevate privileges, and are roles limited to job duties?
- Auditability: What session records exist for the device and access mode being used?
- Management and recovery: Could policy reinstall the app, or could removal affect Wi-Fi, VPN, certificates, or management connectivity?
- Platform and licensing: Does the service support the device and organization, and what enrollment or licensing prerequisites apply?
If a suspicious remote session is active, disconnect it
If someone is connected now and you suspect malicious activity, disconnect the session and notify organizational IT or security. Microsoft gives this advice for a potentially malicious Quick Assist helper: disconnect immediately and report the concern to relevant IT staff or local authorities. Do not share credentials or approve further control prompts.
If you suspect the device is compromised, stop using it for sensitive sign-ins and follow your organization’s incident-response instructions. A CISA and partner-agency advisory about Truebot recommends isolating potentially affected hosts, reviewing artifacts such as processes, services, unusual authentications, and recent network connections, provisioning new credentials, and reimaging a compromised host. Those are incident-response measures from guidance addressing a specific threat—not a universal self-service cleanup sequence for every unfamiliar app. Coordinate them with your organization or a qualified incident responder.

Remove the identified app using the right authorized method
Personal Windows device: Quick Assist
If the specific app is Microsoft Quick Assist on a personal Windows device, Microsoft documents this route: Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Quick Assist > Uninstall. The same guidance documents this administrator PowerShell command:

This command is specific to Microsoft Quick Assist and requires administrator rights. It is not a general removal command for TeamViewer, AnyDesk, ScreenConnect, a service installed under another account, or remote-access software on another operating system. If the app is not clearly identified, do not substitute manual deletion or a generic cleanup tool.
Work or school device managed with Intune
Ask an administrator to remove the identified assigned app or configuration through the organization’s approved endpoint-management process. Microsoft’s Intune guidance for removing apps and configurations, last updated April 6, 2026, describes a managed removal workflow for supported items and platforms. It lists Help Desk Operator and School Administrator among the minimum roles and covers review, removal, monitoring, and restoration.

Do not use a broad network block as a first user-level response. Microsoft documents blocking the Quick Assist service endpoint as an organizational control, but warns that this also disrupts Remote Help because that service depends on the endpoint. Administrators should check dependencies and scope before applying a block.

Have the administrator check the removal status, the device’s management assignment, and whether the approved support route still works. In Intune, the documented removal action can be monitored in a status view and removed items can be restored. It is not necessarily permanent: if an app or configuration remains assigned, Intune may reapply it within 8–24 hours.
Confirm how the device will reach management services after the change. Microsoft warns that removing Wi-Fi, VPN, or certificates used to connect to Intune can interrupt management connectivity; a guest network or cellular connection may be needed to restore access. Do not remove a profile or certificate as a stand-in for uninstalling an app unless the administrator has confirmed the dependency and recovery route.
For prevention, CISA’s joint guidance recommends administrator-level measures such as application allowlisting and monitoring remote-access software. These controls can help limit unapproved execution and identify suspicious use, but they are not changes an individual user should make without authorization.
