For a video shot against a flat, evenly lit white backdrop, use a browser editor’s Chroma Key or Green Screen control: select the clip, sample the white, then adjust the key until the backdrop disappears without erasing white details on the subject. If the background is uneven or busy and the clip shows a person, an AI background remover may work better.

Before exporting, decide whether you need a finished video with a background baked in or a reusable transparent cutout. A checkerboard in the editor preview does not prove the downloaded file contains transparency.

Choose the method that matches the footage

Footage Try first Why
One consistent white shade behind the subject Chroma Key or Green Screen It removes a sampled colour range, so it is the most direct approach for a flat backdrop. Shadows, wrinkles, or changing shades can leave white patches or make the key remove parts of the subject too.
A person against an uneven or busy background AI Background Remover It attempts to separate the person from the scene instead of removing one colour. VEED says its person-focused tool works best with clear, well-lit HD footage; that claim should not be generalized to every subject or scene.

VEED describes Green Screen as a way to remove one solid colour and recommends even lighting. Tembrica lists white among its supported key colours. These are vendor descriptions, not independent quality tests: VEED’s background-removal instructions and Tembrica’s feature page.

Remove a flat white backdrop with chroma key

  1. Open a browser editor and load your clip. Use a service that offers Chroma Key or Green Screen. Select the video clip so its editing controls are available.
  2. Enable the keying control. In VEED, select Green Screen/Chroma Key for the clip. The exact control name and placement can change as the editor’s interface changes.
  3. Sample the white background. Use the colour picker on a representative area of the backdrop, avoiding highlights on the subject.
  4. Adjust sensitivity or range gradually. Increase it enough to remove the backdrop, then inspect the subject’s edges and any white clothing, props, hair highlights, or reflective surfaces. If those details begin to disappear, reduce the setting or try sampling a different part of the backdrop.
  5. Check the full clip. Scrub through the video for changing light, shadows, movement, or white areas that remain. A setting that works on one frame may not work across the whole shot.

VEED documents a colour picker and sensitivity slider for its keying workflow. Its help page is dated August 21, 2026: How to remove background from your videos.

When AI background removal is a better fit

Try AI removal if the shot contains a person and the background varies in shade, has shadows or folds, or is visually busy. Unlike a colour key, AI removal does not depend on the backdrop being one uniform white. It may still leave edge artifacts or miss parts of a subject; inspect the result rather than assuming the preview is clean.

VEED documents its AI Background Remover for clips containing a person and says clear, well-lit HD footage gives the best results. Its help page says free users have full Green Screen access and one free Background Remover try; paid plans have full access to both. These are VEED’s own feature and plan statements, and availability can change. See VEED’s current help article for its stated limits.

Pick the right export: solid background or transparency

“Remove the background” can mean two different outputs. A flattened video has a chosen colour or scene baked into its pixels. A transparent video carries an alpha channel, allowing another editor to place the subject over a different background. Ordinary MP4/H.264 does not carry alpha; BGRemove describes VP9 WebM as an alpha-capable export, while Tembrica lists WebM VP8/VP9 and ProRes 4444 among its alpha-capable formats.

What you need Export choice Important check
A finished video on white, black, or another solid colour Add that background in the editor and export a regular flattened video, such as MP4. The background is part of the picture; it is not reusable transparency.
A cutout to composite over other footage or graphics later Export an alpha-capable format offered by the tool, such as WebM or ProRes 4444 where available. Confirm the destination editor supports that specific codec/container combination and reads its alpha channel.

Formats and compatibility depend on both the exporting tool and the receiving editor. Check the destination’s current format documentation and test a short clip before building a project around the export. BGRemove’s output description is at BGRemove; Tembrica’s format list is at Tembrica.

Browser tools to consider

  • VEED: Documents both colour keying and a person-focused AI remover. Its help page explicitly says exported videos are never transparent, so use it for an output with a background added rather than assuming it can provide an alpha cutout. Its feature and plan statements are vendor-provided: VEED Help Center.
  • Tembrica: Describes AI removal and keying for flat green, blue, black, or white backdrops, with alpha-capable options including WebM, ProRes 4444, animated WebP, and APNG. It also describes browser processing and brush cleanup; these are vendor claims, not independent validation: Tembrica.
  • BGRemove: Describes AI removal with transparent WebM or solid-colour MP4 output. Its tool page states a free allowance of three videos per 24-hour window, and its homepage says uploaded clips must be shorter than 60 seconds. Limits and pricing can change, so check the live pages before relying on them: tool page and homepage.
  • Transparency Render: Describes local browser chroma keying with colour sampling and similarity, edge, and despill controls, plus WebM, MKV, ProRes 4444, or GIF outputs. It warns that larger files can process slowly or run out of memory and recommends desktop browsers for longer clips. These are the site’s own capability and constraint statements: Transparency Render.

Verify that the downloaded file is actually transparent

  1. Import the export into a compatible editor and place it above a solid background in a contrasting colour.
  2. Play or scrub through the clip. If the subject appears directly over the new colour, transparency was preserved. If a white rectangle remains, the video was flattened or the playback path did not interpret the alpha channel.
  3. If the result is wrong, confirm the export format and the destination editor’s support for that exact format, then try a short re-export.

A checkerboard in a browser preview is only a display cue; it does not establish what was encoded into the downloaded file. The alpha-channel distinction and compositing check are also explained by BGRemove. For browser video transparency support, see Chrome for Developers’ overview.
