Microsoft documents the Settings path, but its support pages do not confirm the Remove button’s availability or conditions, so what you see can depend on your device configuration.
Remove your Windows 11 PIN
- Sign in to the Windows account whose PIN you want to remove.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Microsoft identifies this as the place to manage sign-in methods: Sign-In Options in Windows.
- Expand PIN (Windows Hello). If Remove is available, select it and complete any on-screen verification.
If Remove is missing or unavailable
Microsoft says that the availability of certain sign-in settings may vary with device configuration, but does not specify the reasons a PIN removal control might be unavailable. Check whether your device or sign-in settings are managed by an organization, and consult its administrator if applicable. Avoid treating a registry edit, policy change, or passwordless setting as a confirmed fix.
Removing a PIN is not the same as going passwordless
A Windows sign-in PIN is distinct from your Microsoft account password. The Windows Hello-only setting for Microsoft accounts disables password sign-in on that device; it does not remove the PIN. Face, fingerprint, or PIN sign-in remains available through Windows Hello. See Microsoft’s explanation of passwordless sign-in for Microsoft accounts.
Choose another way to sign in
If you remove your PIN, you can use another sign-in method listed in Sign-in options, if your account and device support it.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Password: Use the account password if password sign-in is available.
- Face recognition: Requires a compatible camera.
- Fingerprint: Requires a fingerprint reader. Microsoft says a compatible reader can connect by USB and be purchased separately; check compatibility with Windows Hello before buying.
- Physical security key: Windows lists this as another sign-in option, though availability can vary by device configuration.
Microsoft’s Windows Hello setup guidance describes the available biometric methods and their hardware requirements.
If you forgot the PIN instead
Forgetting a PIN is a recovery problem, not the same as removing one. At the sign-in screen, Microsoft says the I forgot my PIN option is available for Microsoft accounts. For a local account, you may need to sign in with its password first and then manage the PIN in Settings. The available recovery steps depend on account type and whether you can sign in; see Microsoft’s PIN reset guidance.
