A Kindle factory reset clears personal data, downloaded content, and unsynced content, then deregisters the device—but Amazon does not say that it removes a jailbreak or restores stock firmware. Treat reset and jailbreak removal as separate tasks. The steps to reverse a jailbreak depend on the Kindle model, firmware version, and jailbreak method.
What a Kindle factory reset does—and does not do
Amazon documents a factory reset as a way to return a Kindle to factory settings. It removes personal data, downloaded content, and content that has not synced, and deregisters the device from your Amazon account. You must register it again to use it with that account. See Amazon’s Kindle factory-reset instructions for the device-specific wording and navigation.
That guidance does not establish that a reset removes jailbreak changes or reinstalls every modified firmware component. A reset may address your data and account state without undoing system-level changes. Do not treat the reset as a confirmed jailbreak-removal procedure.
Choose the right action for your goal
| Action | Use it for | Effect on data and account | What it establishes about a jailbreak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart | Temporary troubleshooting, such as a Kindle that is frozen or slow. | Preserves your data and account registration. | Amazon describes restart separately from reset; it is not documented as jailbreak removal. |
| Factory reset | Clearing local data and settings for troubleshooting or preparing to transfer the device. | Removes personal data, downloaded and unsynced content, and deregisters the Kindle. | Amazon’s instructions do not say it removes a jailbreak or restores stock firmware. |
| Jailbreak cleanup or firmware recovery | Reversing modifications to the device software. | Effects depend on the procedure and device; no universal account or data outcome is established. | Requires guidance specific to the model, firmware, and jailbreak method. |
Amazon explains the restart and reset distinction in its Kindle restart and reset guidance and advises consulting Kindle Support before a hard reset.

How to factory-reset a Kindle
Use these steps only if you intend to clear the Kindle’s local data and deregister it. Menu names differ by model and interface; older devices may show “Reset Device” instead of “Factory Reset.”
- From the Home screen, open Quick Actions or Menu.
- Choose Settings or All Settings.
- Open Device Options, or Menu on interfaces that use that label.
- Select Factory Reset. On some older devices, select Reset Device.
- Review the prompt and confirm only if you are ready to erase local data and deregister the Kindle.
Before resetting, make sure anything you need has synced. Amazon says downloaded content and content that has not synced are removed by the reset.

Remove the Kindle from your Amazon account separately
If your goal is only to disconnect the Kindle from your account, deregister it through the account controls: open Your Account or My Account, choose Deregister or Deregister Device, and confirm. Amazon recommends a factory reset before gifting or selling a Kindle: deregistration removes the account association, while the reset clears content and user settings. See Amazon’s Kindle deregistration instructions.

There is no current, authoritative procedure established here that applies to every Kindle model and jailbreak. Recovery instructions can differ across generations, firmware versions, and jailbreak methods, so applying a procedure for another device can be inappropriate. Amazon’s reset pages explain data and account operations, not jailbreak cleanup.

Before you give away or sell the Kindle
- Sync content you want to keep before resetting; unsynced content and downloads are removed.
- Use the factory-reset option to clear local content and user settings.
- Confirm the device is deregistered from your Amazon account after the reset.
- If the Kindle was jailbroken, do not represent a reset as proof that its system software has returned to stock.
