The broadly supported way to remove a jailbreak is to restore the iPhone using a Mac or Windows PC. This erases the phone and installs the latest iOS version available for that device. Back up first if you need to preserve data, but if you suspect malicious software was installed, Apple advises setting up the iPhone as new rather than restoring a backup.
Choose between restoring a backup and starting fresh
A computer restore deletes the iPhone’s local information and settings. Before you begin, decide whether your priority is keeping personal data or avoiding the possibility that a backup could bring unwanted software back.

- Preserve personal data: Back up the iPhone before restoring. Apple’s Mac backup instructions explain how to make an encrypted local backup; encryption is required to retain Health and Activity data, and you will need the backup password to recover it. Apple’s backup instructions.
- Concerned about malicious software: Apple advises not to restore a backup if you believe malicious software is present, because the backup could reinstall it. Applied cautiously to a jailbroken iPhone, the cleanest option is to set up as new and recover only data you can safely obtain separately. Apple does not state a jailbreak-specific backup rule. See Apple’s guidance on removing unwanted software.
Before restoring, update the Mac or PC, make sure you know the iPhone passcode and Apple Account password if prompted, and turn off Find My for the iPhone. Apple’s current procedure is documented at Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings.
Restore the iPhone with Finder or Apple Devices
- Connect the iPhone to the computer with a compatible USB data cable.
- On a Mac, open Finder. On a Windows PC, open Apple Devices.
- Select the iPhone. If asked, trust the computer and enter the iPhone passcode.
- Choose Restore, then confirm. The computer erases the iPhone and installs the latest software for that device.
- When the iPhone restarts to the Hello screen, follow setup. Choose to restore a backup only if that fits your data and security decision above.
Do not disconnect the iPhone while the restore is in progress. If the computer does not recognize the phone or cannot complete the restore, use recovery mode.

Use recovery mode if a normal restore fails
Recovery mode is Apple’s fallback when a computer cannot update or restore the iPhone normally. The button sequence depends on the model. Follow Apple’s current instructions for using recovery mode to restore your iPhone.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer and open Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on a Windows PC.
- Use the recovery-mode button sequence for your model family: iPhone 8 or later, iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, or iPhone 6s or earlier.
- When the computer offers Update or Restore, select Restore to reinstall iOS and erase the iPhone.
If the software download takes more than 15 minutes, the iPhone may leave the recovery screen. Let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode connection steps. If you cannot use recovery mode or the iPhone still will not restore, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider.

What restoring removes—and what it does not guarantee
A factory restore replaces the installed iOS software and erases local information and settings. It returns the iPhone to Apple’s standard software rather than preserving the jailbroken setup. It is not a promise that you will retain data: that depends on having a usable backup and choosing to restore it during setup.
Apple warns that jailbreaking bypasses security features and can cause security vulnerabilities, instability, shortened battery life, data loss, disrupted services, and problems installing future updates. Apple may deny service when unauthorized software is installed. Read Apple’s iPhone User Guide explanation of unauthorized iOS modifications.

Should you remove the jailbreak before requesting service?
Apple warns that it may deny service for an iPhone with unauthorized software. Restoring the device is the supported way to reinstall standard iOS before seeking service, but it does not guarantee that a service request will be accepted. Back up data you need first, and be prepared to provide the device passcode or Apple Account credentials if requested during setup or support.
You do not need a paid jailbreak-removal utility or generic cleaner for Apple’s restore procedure. Use Apple’s computer workflow or recovery mode instead.
